Hard to imagine the destruction these reigned down on their enemies and on the environment, as I stood at this now peaceful spot. From this position on Seminary Ridge, the Confederate artillery exchanged fire with the Union artillery across the field. Survivors of the battle said that the earth shook for two hours. The noise so loud that it burst the eardrums of many of the soldiers. At one point, the Union artillery went silent. After some time, the Confederates assumed the Union side was either in retreat or severely compromised by casualties. Neither was true. They were just waiting for the smoke to clear so they could see their targets. The Confederate generals ordered the charge and some 10,000 men attempted to cross the field to the Union side. The Union could finally see the events unfolding before them and waited until the charge was uncomfortably close to their line. Finally the barrage began again and only 200 Confederate soldiers ever breached that rise. They were quickly dispatched. As for the other several thousand men, many were dead in the field, more were injured, and the rest either captured or retreated.
This was the turning point in the Battle of Gettysburg, the only battle fought on Union territory during the Civil War. Confederate General Robert E. Lee had hoped to strike a psychological blow to the North by defeating them on their own soil. This did not happen. Within a year, the Civil War was over.
Don't know why, but when I shot this, I had a distinct feeling that it expressed the US Civil War. Weird.
