This is a deer species native to the Indian subcontinent. It is a moderate-sized deer that is sexually dimorphic; males being larger than females, and antlers being present only on males. An interesting tidbit, the vernacular name "Chital" comes from the Hindi word Cital which in turn is derived from the Sanskrit word Citrala that means "variegated" or "spotted". The name of the Cheetah has a similar origin. Other common names for the deer are Spotted Deer and Axis Deer.
