The horse funalis, located in the chariots to the left, performed an important job, since the turn they gave to the spina depended on it and it was the most risky maneuver in the race, since it was necessary to block the way to the others participants and get them to fall into the sand.
During the Roman Republic there were two sides or teams, the red, factio russata and the white, factio albata. In the 1st century, the factio prasina, the faction of the greens, and the factio veneta, which corresponded to the blues, were added. They were the four most important and had great weight in the ludi circenses of the Roman world. Each of these teams had in their charioteers true heroes who made wins and earned large sums of money and honours. The Blues and Greens eventually absorbed the other factions throughout the third century. The whites were assimilated to the greens and the reds to the blues.

When I went down to the beach tonight there were no decent clouds and a cold northerly wind. I started taking reflected cliffs, then this superb cloud came charging across the sky from the South West, so it has to be Chariots of Silk, by Tyrannosaurus Rex, a very old one. Vijayanagar ( City of Victory) was the capital city of the historic Vijayanagara Empire. Located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, it spread over a large area and included the modern era Group of Monuments at Hampi site in Vijayanagara district, Bellary district and others in and around these districts in Karnataka, India.
The Vijaynagar empire was established in 1336 by the brothers Harihara I and Bukka Raya I of the Sangama dynasty, and rose to prominence as a culmination of attempts by the southern powers to ward off Perso-Turkic Islamic invasions by the end of the 13th century. At its peak, it subjugated almost all of South India's ruling families and pushed the sultans of the Deccan. It lasted until 1646, although its power declined after a major military defeat in the Battle of Talikota in 1565 by the combined armies of the Deccan sultanates.
The chariot photographed above is actually a shrine dedicated to Garuda, built inside the Vittala Temple Complex. The massive sculpture of Garuda, Lord Vishnu’s escort once was seated atop the chariot but it is empty at the present date. The Hampi Chariot has earned its name among the other three famous stone chariots in India- One in Konark, Odissa, and the other in Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu).

I'm smart
It's all gone
I am wise
Nothing more
I don't need anything
The horses have galloped away
In this chariot
There's only one driver
I'm dancing the dance
Thinking of nothing
Arms, elbows and hands
My head is clear

Supposedly it was either here or near here that the opening and closing scenes from the classic early 80's movie, Chariots of Fire, were filmed. It was where the Olympian contenders were running on the beach with that iconic score by Vangelis playing in the background.
If you haven't seen the movie, you'll have to take my word for it. :)
Heritage site of global importance
Konark Sun Temple is located on the eastern coast of India in Puri, Odisha. It is about 65 km from the capital city of Bhubaneswar. Sun Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its exquisite architecture and intricate stone carvings. It is one of the most impressive temples in India where architecture is concerned.
Architectural marvel
The temple is in the shape of a chariot, with exquisitely carved wheels and galloping horses. The temple's architecture is an excellent example of the Kalinga style of architecture. The temple also features elaborate stone carvings depicting scenes from Hindu mythology.
Two large scale-models of bronze chariots and horses were unearthed in December, 1980, about 20 meters east of the mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. They were tagged Chariot No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. Both required extensive restorations, over two and half years, before going on display.
These were encased in a wooden box measuring 6.8 x 2.1 x 2 meters for over two thousand years. And the box was buried 8 meters down in a trench.
These are half size scale-models of real chariots and horses, faithfully copied down to the last detail, complete with horses and people. No. 1 Chariot is a two-wheeled vehicle drawn by a team of four strong horses. There is only one seat for the driver, whose eyes are glued to the road ahead. There is a large umbrella providing shade from the sun.
Perhaps the most iconic structure of the Hampi ruins, the stone chariot is a magically beautiful granite sculpture that dates to about the 16th century when the Vijaynagar kingdom was in its most glorious phase.Hampi is a city frozen in time with all its architectural details of the layout intact. The fact that the city after it was looted and pillaged by the invading Moslem armies did not witness any human habitation. That is what makes this place unique in India. Elsewhere we have towns and forts in abundance that were taken over and destroyed by the invaders but people continued to inhabit the places subsequently.
The ruins are now a heritage site recognised by UNESCO and the Archaeological Survey of India looks after the property.
The stone remains have weathered the 400-500 years of time with great ease as the atmosphere is dry and clean and the fact that most of it is granite which was used by the builders at that time.
Some portions of brickwork that was used can be seen but the rest is all gone including the people who used to reside in the city.
