Australian crows and ravens are challenging to identify; concentrate on call, throat-hackles, behavior, and location. Calls typically end with a very long, drawn-out wail. The very long throat hackles lend it a bulbous-bearded appearance. Inhabits many habitats in southwestern Western Australia and much of eastern Australia. Essentially the default crow/raven in Sydney and Perth. (eBird)

-----------

They may be the default corvid in much of Australia, but like all crows and ravens they are very wary and like to keep their distance. We saw them multiple times but this was the only time that i had a chance of a photo, and I must say, it came out pretty well.

This is the vehicle that I use to take most of my pictures in. This particular trip was very challenging and gave me a little chill! I was trying to take a picture of my jeep that does it justice in honor of the mountain we just climbed! I don't think I will be doing it again any time soon :)

If I ever stop challenging myself, then I am getting lazy and comfortable and I am no longer growing. I hope to use life's challenges as stepping stones to ever greater things.

Life is challenging for all of us right now, but I will try to keep sharing some of the beauty from my small part of this vast world. Here in Canada, we are being told by our leaders to stay at home, but they also are encouraging us to get outdoors. Of course that means staying out of crowds, and keeping a safe distance from each other. So keeping this in mind, I will endeavour to continue taking pictures where possible.

Remember that day, we met for coffee and you were late

Yeah, we chatted 'bout you and you mostly but a bit about me

And then we went back to yours and I never been there before

On the blue line subway

Yeah, I think it was raining, you made me a painting

Sing a song about dolphins, young love, was calling

It was a good day

Oh, what a good day

But it is long gone now

When all the stars fell down

It was a good day

Oh, what a good day

That day you broke my heart

I loved you way too hard

Now I'm free

I made a trip yesterday to Block Island, which was of course more challenging than usual due to Covid concerns. Block Island is about 12 miles off the coast of Rhode Island. I’d never been there off season before. A surprising number of people were on the ferry, but we were all of course wearing masks and “distancing” as required. I rented a bike and went out to Mohegan Bluffs, which are probably the most impressive cliffs you can find anywhere in New England. Anyway, New Shoreham, the town which technically covers the whole of Block Island, has a population of about 1100 inhabitants, they market themselves as the “smallest town in the smallest state”.

There are a surprising number of cars for such a small island. I saw a bumper sticker that read “Block Island, social distancing since 1651” :)

If you zoom in, you can see the stairs going down to the beach.

You can also see South East Lighthouse from 1875, more about that coming.

Photographing glass is challenging. Infuriating. Rewarding? I’ve shot this wine glass many times and each time I get a completely different result. Should you backlight or side light or in this case a bit of both? I used a green plastic bag over my LED light to create the colour, the other hues are refractions and reflections from random objects on the table.

I tried a whole array of subjects this week, up to the wire on time again!

Nth Stradbroke Island, east coast Australia. The waves were choppy, rough, and fast to break. After some challenging storm surfing, I came in and took a few shots of the wild ocean surf... you can see another surfer friend of mine (a guy this time... see first shot before) at the bottom left takeoff point, riding a wave, a bit cautiously as this was one was so choppy and the wild surf is starting to flatten out a bit .... awesome fun, workout and being one-with-nature!

It’s challenging to get a decent photo from a boat that’s rocking and rolling and being drenched in water. Visitors touring the Stirling Waterfall from a boat get the famous Milford ‘glacial facial’ as a reward for visiting. Is it worth it? Absolutely!

There were some dead trees which were not too tall that the Bee-eaters loved to perch on. However, if I wanted to have the sun at my back, which is ideal, I would've gotten most photos with the sky as the background. So I either chose better lighting and worse background or better background and worse light. You can tell from this photo which I chose. But that wasn't the only challenge or problem. Soon enough, I would find myself on the edge of giving up......

Just before dawn in Samburu, northern Kenya, land of acacias and doum palms, land of sand and rock and dust, with the lifegiving Ewaso Ng'iro River coursing through it and separating the Buffalo Springs on the far bank and Samburu national reserves. Don't be lulled by the serene scene photographed from the Elephant Bedroom Camp, because there are crocodiles in the river and big cats stalking the banks. Some challenging canoe balancing for this one...;-) Our weather has been spectacular, sunny with record highs moving toward 70F. And not one hard frost or even the suggestion of snow which is unheard of this late in the year. Not too many complaints to be heard...except from the deer hunters, whose season opened this weekend and who tend to rely on colder temps and snow for tracking purposes. Sorry guys...oh, and gals.

Challenging me in order to protect all the hens. So not bad to shot he as close as this one. Both trying to do our best.

Somewhat more challenging hike from Bezau to Winterstaude - about 8 hours / 20 km (13 mi) and about 1300 (4300 ft) elevation gain. Few people on the way - we like that. The weather doesn't look so good - but optimal visibility. Perfect temperature for hiking.

A challenging bird to shoot in flight and this ones off my target list now for birds in flight. While the flight path is predictable, the bird is pretty fast and pretty small, so its hard to get into focus. Just found the right place to get the action and waited. I wasn't disappointed with several of them flying over the lake taking turns to catch flies hovering above.

We were excited to embark on a hiking tour of the secret trail in the nearby touring area of Ohlstadt (aka gate to the famous mountain Heimgarten but we intended to hike to a different summit.) We loaded our car with essentials like water bottles, snacks and hiking boots, and set out early in the morning to begin our adventure.

As we started on the trail, we quickly realized that this was not going to be an easy hike. The ground was slippery due to recent rains, and the trail was very steep. We had to rely on our instincts, sense of direction and outdoor app, as there were no guideposts to show us the way.

Despite the challenges, we were determined to reach the summit. We pushed ourselves to keep climbing, taking breaks to catch our breath and admire the beautiful views along the way. We saw few hikers on the trail, which added to the sense of adventure.

After 2.5 hours of hiking, we finally reached the summit. The view was spectacular, and we felt a sense of accomplishment and awe as we looked out over the valley below.

As we made our way back down the trail, we felt grateful for the experience. It had been a challenging hike, but the reward at the top had been worth it. We felt like we had discovered a secret gem in the touring area!

Some challenging light this morning, but worth getting on site for 6:00 even though there was only a hour of good light before the clouds stole the moment. A view over the hazy flatland of South Oxfordshire, taken from Castle Hill at Wittenham Clumps.

Challenging to keep this furbaby still, got to be quick on the shutter button.

My first time to photograph oil on water. I find it challenging but I had fun. I took some photos yesterday but not successful and I did a lot of mess. I tried again this morning and this time I used a decorative plate and some flower petals and then put my clear round dish on top of it. After some more "trial and errors" and 24 shots all together, I think this one is good enough to share with you.

Managing a nest is challenging and the parents are regularly making flights to catch more insects and food. Here one of them fed some food to its chicks in the nest and is back another round. They are such efficient creatures that it appears that they don't take any rest at all. I still don't know if there are any differentiating marks that can help in identifying each swift uniquely.

The shot was incredibly challenging though due to the birds highly unpredictable flight pattern. I finally managed to get a decent shot. I shot this while it flew out of its nest under the bridge.

Challenging the tide on Cofete Beach

This is a challenging stretch of the coast path, as there is a series of these monster chalk cliffs. When I was younger I used to race up and down them quite enthusiastically, but nowadays I'm more inclined to cheat. If you veer off inland, there's a flat stretch you can walk along and then easily come out on to whichever viewpoint you choose.

However, on this occasion (according to the photographic record), I did actually do down to the beach here and then climb up that next cliff, where there were some good pics to be had ;-)

A challenging theme this week. Have already seen interesting and beautiful ideas. Wishing you a cracking and HMM.

This is a bird I photographed last Summer in Calgary. We were attending a friend's 60Th birthday celebration and decided to stick around for a few days and do some birding. Thanks to another friend Geoff who took us to some fantastic locations for birding and photography around Calgary. It was my first opportunity to get Black Tern in flight, we do not have these birds at home... Wow.... was I ever challenged.... They do not like the camera, they are quite fast and trying to focus on these dark birds was a frustrating exercise... Perhaps Nikon and Canon would be interested in these subjects to test the new gear they are working on... Anyway, given the amount of practice I need to get these birds, I will need a few trips back into the Calgary area .... This is a superb bird and well worth the multiple visits!

Easily one of the most challenging photos I've taken in my relatively brief photographic experience. Fog had not totally lifted by late afternoon and snow was continuing to fall. It felt like my fingers had fallen off (slight exaggeration) in the sub-freezing temps while mounting the camera and lens to the tripod. The challenge, however, came in deciding how to capture this rather magical scene. As a C.S. Lewis and J.R.R Tolkien fan, whose mythical prose paint vivid, even startling images, I let my imagination loose. What it came up with was a high-key attempt (Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 lens on a Nikon D750, ISO 160, 24mm, f/4, 0.8sec): Over exposed in the camera. Back in the comfort of my den with a cup of hot chocolate close at hand, I processed my images through Lightroom and came up with what you see here. Yes, I took artistic license, that kind of license, though, I think Lewis and Tolkien would have relished.

Thank you so much for viewing. I really appreciate your kind and helpful comments! They mean a lot. Best to each of you!

An incredibly challenging bird to shoot in flight due to the highly unpredictable flight pattern. There is a place - a bridge - that hosts 100's of swallows and dozens of Swifts. We spent an hour challenging ourselves and trying to get some good shots - and I did - less than 10 shots out of 100's.

In this series of shots, I photographed several swifts carrying some feathers back to their nests. I am not sure where they got it since there were no flock of birds anywhere - atleast with white feathers.

The Swifts are an extraordinary species of birds pushing the limits of what we know of birds. Some of the swift species are known to fly for their life-time (4-6 years) barely touching ground. They are known to sleep while flying, mate while flying and come to the nest only to lay eggs. Some Swift species are recorded flying for almost 9-10 months straight.

Thanks in advance for your views and feedback.

This Cattle Egret had no qualms about challenging the Goat for the right to eat in this specific patch of grass. It's difficult to say from the Goat's expression, but I would say it is nonplussed.

Défier les montagnes environnantes

Here's one from midweek of the week-long US Open of Surfing. It was challenging, to say the least: Challenging for the surfers as they were served up big messy waves from the effects of Hurricane Frank, and challenging light for me as the intermittent sun was at a 10 or 11 o'clock direction here to the left. But I thought you might enjoy a taste of SoCal beach life. This fellow is at the start of an aerial 360. He's gonna make it all the way around.

I've been photographing surfers occasionally for decades, usually right here off the Huntington Beach pier. What's cool is you can kinda walk out on the pier to where the waves are breaking and get some pretty good views, although obviously elevated. Light on the other side of the pier was better on the local surfers. Ya takes what they gives ya.

I find it very challenging to photograph hibiscus. Where to focus? What to include & exclude? I like the light and shadow here. Just cropped, otherwise straight out of the camera.

I found this week's theme extremely challenging, was about to give up, as my usual approach of just intuitively playing around into the direction of the given theme with my camera didn't work at all this time.

So I had to focus on and try to understand what works how and why in focusing, moving the camera to the side (how fast? in one continuous movement or with interruptions, as I did in my second choice pic,?)

It took me quite a while (and quite a bit of braintwisting effort and rubbish products) to work my way to by and by better results and the beginning of having fun with this brain teaser. In the end I really liked some of my swooshy shark eye moon shell pictures and was happy that I hadn't given up cracking this tough nut!

In your MM pictures I can see both the same struggling for good results and the lightness of expertise which shortens the process of producing brilliant motion blurr macros in such a relaxed way.

All in all I loved this challenge a lot because of the chance to deal with the unknown and because of all the incredible energy that shows in the wonderful collection of motion blurr pictures of this (my favorite!) group!
