This relatively common coral fossil is found in the Chicago area limestones. This specimen is water worn and was found on a beach on Lake Michigan. Large reefs of marine fossils are found in the bottom of the lake and the region. In my collection.

I composed this image as a response to my ongoing self-challenge: "Construct a creative image of a common household object." This photograph is of water running down a Rain Chain, and splashing on a hard surface. I cropped and then heightened some colour, and flipped the image, but otherwise didn't edit the photograph.

Originating from Japan, rain chains are artistic alternatives to traditional downspouts. They are essentially a series of decorative cups or shapes chained together, which guide rainwater from roof gutters down to the ground. When it rains, the water cascades down the chain to create a beautiful waterfall effect.

Rain chains are an environmentally conscious choice for rainwater management. By guiding rainwater directly into the ground, a barrel or a garden, they reduce the amount of water that ends up in storm drains, lessening the strain on local water treatment facilities. As an added bonus, rain chains are often made from recycled materials and contribute to a circular economy and reduced environmental impact.

I have created a Flickr Album entitled "At Home Creatives" where a selection of similarly-themed photographs will be found. I invite you to visit and I hope you enjoy.

Small details to be find on the streets.

I used a 45mm lens from Olympus. This focal lens (equal to 90mm in a full frame system) and big aperture help to created a small deep of field.

AJAC challenge - December - new software

This Christmas bauble was hand beaded with sequins and pins by me. I have a Christmas tradition. I bead Christmas baubles for a select group of friends every year.

Each bauble is 15 centimetres in diameter and contain hundreds of sequins, varying in number depending upon the complexity of the pattern and the type of sequins I use. All the sequins in this bauble are 5mm in diameter, including the flowers. The flowers are vintage French metal sequins from the 1930s in this bauble, so they are rare. Depending upon the colour of the sequin, I will use either a gold or a silver pin to attach it to the bauble. I always leave the flower sequins until last, allowing a gap in the sequin chain to pin them in.

These baubles are smaller than some others I do, and because it is a simple pattern which starts from the inside and is worked outwards in ever larger circles, each bauble takes approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours per side.

It is however, a labour of love which I do to pass the time throughout the year.

Markarian's Chain

Markarian's Chain is a stretch of galaxies that forms part of the Virgo Cluster. When viewed from Earth, the galaxies lie along a smoothly curved line. It was named after the Armenian astrophysicist, Benjamin Markarian, who discovered their common motion in the early 1960s. Member galaxies include M84 (NGC 4374), M86 (NGC 4406), NGC 4477, NGC 4473, NGC 4461, NGC 4458, NGC 4438 and NGC 4435. Near the center there appear the pair of interacting galaxies NGC 4438 and NGC 4435, about 50 million light-years away, known to some as Markarian's Eyes.At least seven galaxies in the chain appear to move coherently, although others appear to be superposed by chance. Six of the points on the chain can be marked by galaxies. The other two points are pairs of galaxies

Another from the set I took of a chain bracelet. Not sure which I prefer.

Well it's been ten years and a thousand tears

And look at the mess I'm in

A broken nose and a broken heart,

An empty bottle of gin

Well I sit and I pray

In my broken down Chevrolet

While I'm singin' to myself

There's got to be another way...

A heavy chain suspended from our Yew tree. We inherited it when we moved in. I suspect it was used in some kind of paint spraying operation.
