The Champagne Pool at the thermal site »Wai-O-Tapu« in the north island of New Zealand derives its name from the carbon dioxide bubbles which bubble up just like in a glas of champagne.

The hot spring water ist saturated with metalloid compounds, which create the orange parts of the shore as deposits of orpiment and stibnite, while the rest of the shore is formed from grey-white silica sinter.

A family crosses the Queen's Park Bridge to the district of Queen's Park and Handbridge, Chester, UK.

The suspension bridge is the only footbridge to cross the River Dee in Chester apart from the footbridge attached to the railway bridge. It was originally built in 1852 at the instigation of Enoch Gerrard, Esq., the "projector and proprietor" of Queen's Park, the developing suburb across the river.

According to Thomas Hughes, author of "The Stranger's Handbook to Chester": "It was 'a pretty object in the landscape. Though of such spider-like construction, its capabilities and strength have been fully tested".

An Arachnid of a different kind

Might get some arguments on this one.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Limburg, Heerlen, Dutch Mining Museum, Gasmask (cut from B&T)

A 'stand-in' miner in the Dutch mining museum, wearing a gas mask. Standing before a lift with its instructions.

Mine gas is always a problem in the mines. It was discovered by Alessandro Volta in 1778 and is a gas mixture that consists of more than 93 % methane. Methane (CH4) is colourless, and odourless and non-toxic. Still, in high concentrations, the oxygen content for the respiration of the workers may become too low.

Mine gas is created during the carbonization of plant residues. Because the resulting coal strata are covered with earth and rock layers, the gas cannot escape, and it stays in the coal strata, sometimes under high pressure. The gas release from the coal layers starts as soon as they are exposed. Generally, the release is slow and regular, but the sudden release of large quantities of gas cán happen. Because the gas is only half as heavy as air, it will rise to higher places and gather there. Because industrial mines have powerful ventilation systems. But this is not always enough.

The museum uses the shaft building of the decommissioned Oranje-Nassau 1 mine (once commonly known as ON1). I started up in 1899 and decommissioned in 1974. It's history is here.

For more information, check out the previous post.

This is the last one of the Dutch Mine Museum mini series.

Steatoda nobilis

Uk's most venomous spider

Not much worse than a wasp or bee sting

unmistakable by the skull-like pattern on the abdomen

i found this one on my bedroom ceiling ,

One angry female, an unusual viewpoint

There is a big amount of organic debris on the ground in this creek. Bacteria form in an anaerobic process gas (methane) and release it into the atmosphere. The greenjouse effect of methane is about 300 times more than the same quantity of carbondioxide! The bubbles are causing rings of wavelets on the surface of the water.

This time of the year you'll find these running across your carpet and are probable responsible for more Halloween screams that any spooky ghosts
