Celtic cross is a symbol that combines a cross with a ring surrounding the intersection. It belongs to a kind of crosses with a nimbus. In the Celtic Christian world it was combined with the Christian cross and this design was often used for high crosses – a free-standing cross made of stone and often richly decorated.

With the Celtic Revival the shape, usually decorated with interlace and other motifs from Insular art, became popular for funerary monuments and other uses, and has remained so, spreading well beyond Ireland.

Celtic Fest Ohio held in Harveysburg, Ohio. This young woman with the great hair was with the young man in the next shot. They were a friendly, enthusiastic couple who told us about the upcoming Renaissance festival which will be held later on the same grounds. They encouraged us to come to that event which we've been planning to do for several years. They met at a previous year's Renaissance festival. I got the impression that they were connected to the event in some capacity. It would be nice to run into them again.

The Oratory was built on the grounds of a Dominican Convent to house the statue of Christ which was sent from Flanders to commemorate the soldiers of Dún Laoghaire who were killed in the First World War. A member of the community, Sr. Concepta Lynch, was asked to paint the wall behind the statue as a backdrop to it. The result was so admired that she was encouraged to decorate the entire Oratory. Harry Clarke’s stained glass studio contributed the windows. The ceiling remains unfinished, due to Sr. Concepta’s death in 1939. It has been described as “one of the best examples of the spirit of the Celtic Revival in Art in the early years of the 20th century” (Dr. Brian Kennedy).

The building passed to the care of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council in 1994, and the enclosing shell was built to preserve it. It is hoped soon to install plaques engraved with the names of all those from Dún Laoghaire who died in the First World War.

Celtic Travel of Llanidloes received three of these fine Wright Eclipse Urban 2-bodied Volvo B7RLEs in early 2012 after assuming the Powys CC contract for Service X75 (Rhayader-Llangurig-Llnidloes-Newtown-Welshpool-Shrewsbury) from Tanat Valley Coaches (who used Optare Tempos). They remain on fleet strength despite the company having received eight MCV eVoRa-bodied Volvo B8RLEs in recent years.

This September 2013 shot of BG61 SXV was taken as she was laying over at The Gro in Llanidloes.

The service (as the D75) can trace its roots back to Crosville days, and a small depot (be it with only a fueling facility), and later as an outstation of Oswestry depot, was maintained at this location up to Arriva's days, before transferring to Abermule, east of Newtown.

I purchased this Celtic Cross in Toronto Canada back in the early 1990's. My mom told me years ago that I have Irish/Welsh blood so I decided to buy the cross as an homage to my roots.

The oldest and most striking feature of Eyam churchyard is the eighth-century Celtic cross. One of the best preserved examples in the country, it is decorated with a mixture of Christian and pagan symbols. It may have originally been a wayside preaching cross.

Eyam (pronounced Ee'm) is known as the Plague Village. For information on its very interesting history see here.

Celtic Fest Ohio held in Harveysburg, Ohio. This pretty young lady and her friend (next picture) were walking around the festival with several small children at least one of which was in a stroller when I noticed them dressed in appropriate costumes for the event and asked if I could take some pictures. They graciously agreed. I don't know who's birthday it was that their hats were announcing, but they were obviously were in a celebratory mood.

A Celtic cross is a symbol that combines a cross with a ring surrounding the intersection. The symbol is associated with Celtic Christianity, although it has older, pre-Christian origins. Such crosses form a major part of Celtic art. A standing Celtic cross, made of stone and often richly ornamented, is called a high cross or Irish Cross.
