Coyote Buttes, South -- much easier to get a permit for than the Wave and, IMO, more interesting. When the weather cools and the light gets better and the D800e finally comes, I'm gonna go back for several days. I finished our Trip Report and you can read Part 3 at the same link as Parts 1 and 2: Just scroll down further.

WEEK 16 – Elsewhere around Greenville

(3/4)

Even though “Breaking Greenville” portrayed WXVT and WABG as the rivals they had always been, technically, by that time the two stations were under the control of a single owner. Local businessman Charles Harker bought WABG in 2007, and his adult children purchased WXVT in 2013, at which point Harker’s company took over operations of the latter.

Frankly, in a situation like this, it’s surprising that the two stations continued to put out separate content. After all, it seems like a useless duplication of effort. Which is why, when Harker sold out to Cala Broadcasting Partners in late 2015, it came as no surprise when Cala made the decision to consolidate operations into WABG’s downtown Greenville facilities, effectively shutting down the WXVT news department for good. Hence, that second reason I mentioned I took these photos for: the WXVT building has been sitting abandoned since 2016. You’d think they may have been bothered to remove the CBS branding at least, but I guess no one is really worried about little old DMA 194.

Note, in all this discussion so far, that I’ve only mentioned two television stations. You may be confused, since there are, in fact, five television networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, CW, and Fox. But, remember, Greenville is a tiny market. It should come as no surprise to you that they didn’t get their own Fox affiliate until 2006, and only then as a subchannel to WABG. NBC came even later: 2010, as its own, low-powered station, WNBD-LD. (Low-powered basically means its signal doesn’t transmit as far as a regular, full-powered station. It also has less stringent ownership rules, which we’ll get to in a moment.) To my knowledge, they still don’t have their own CW station.

The Delta Magazine “brief history” feature I linked to in the previous description has these words to share about WXVT’s demise:

After Cala purchased WABG-TV and WXVT, the new owners decided to put it all under the same roof. That meant one newscast across four networks. …

The old WABG-TV building in downtown Greenville was remodeled to make room for everyone. WXVT’s Reed Road building was emptied. Some items and equipment made the move. Others were discarded and the building is empty and now for sale.

“It’s sad,” says [Delta TV legend Anne] Martin [who had been with WXVT since the beginning]. “Technically WXVT doesn’t even really exist anymore,” she said. Due to broadcast and transmitter issues, WXVT went off the air in late 2016 and CBS moved to NBC affiliate WNBD-LD [as a subchannel].

“It broke my heart they day they closed the WXVT building,” said Martin.

Some WXVT staff made the move over to the combined operation, but there were cuts as well, on both sides in fact; one of the casualties was none other than Pam Chatman, the “star” of “Breaking Greenville,” the self-proclaimed “Oprah of the South” (even though, you know, Oprah is the Oprah of the South). But all in all, it probably made more sense to consolidate into just one local news operation. The newscasts are branded as “The Delta News,” and continue to originate out of WABG’s studios, complete with a minimally altered set. Check out their website here, and video of a sample newscast here.

These places are public so these photos are too, but just as I tell where they came from, I'd appreciate if you'd say who :)
