An excellent crash course on ChatGPT:

No question countries are shying away from the dollar. On top of the U.S. weaponizing the dollar, causing many countries to think twice about holding dollars for their foreign reserves, the U.S. is no longer the biggest trading partner for many of these countries. Another challenge is the BRICS countries proposal of setting up a new currency and the U.S. is way behind on setting up its central bank digital currency (CBDC).

With the continuous U.S. deficit spending, printing more and more dollars with nothing to back them up, not to mention the U.S. attempt to isolate China, causing huge supply chain problems, inflation is guaranteed. The recent Saudi's announcement that they would consider accepting another currency for oil and their intention to join BRICS was another impetus toward the fall of the dollar.

The U.S. government knows all these. The only way out is to use its military might to intimidate other countries and to persuade allies to help out. While many Anglo European countries are doing just that, often at their own peril, Germany's total silence on the Nord Stream Pipelines sabotage is a good example, other allies such as Japan and India are not totally on board. Japan has shrunk its dollar holdings and India has increased buying oil from Russia. The Philippines, while allowing the U.S. to rotate soldiers on four military bases, is joining the Chinese led Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

I would not say the fall is imminent though. But there's no question the U S. global influence is shrinking.

ChatGPT predicts US dollar dominance will give way to a multipolar currency system as China's yuan gains influence

▫️ Insider asked OpenAI's ChatGPT to weigh in on whether the US dollar or China's yuan would be the world's dominant currency in the future.

▫️ The chatbot asserted that a "multipolar" system was likely, instead of a system dominated by one or two currencies.

▫️ ChatGPT also noted the rise of both the euro and yuan in international trade.

The US dollar has been the premier currency for international trade and global foreign-exchange reserves, but a broader set of currencies could play leading roles in the future.

That's according to ChatGPT, the popular artificial intelligence chatbot created by OpenAI. In response to a question on whether the US dollar or the Chinese yuan would be dominant in the future, ChatGPT declined to choose between the two.

Both currencies have their pros and cons, and it's possible that neither will at the top in the future, it said, pointing to a more diverse set of currencies.

"The US dollar has been the dominant international currency for much of the past century, and it remains widely used and accepted as a store of value, a medium of exchange, and a unit of account," ChatGPT said. "Its widespread use, particularly in international trade, gives the US dollar significant influence on the world stage. However, in recent years, there have been efforts to reduce the dollar's dominance and increase the use of other currencies, such as the euro and the yuan, in international transactions."

As for the yuan, China has been gradually increasing its role in the global economy in recent years, becoming more widely used in international trade and investment, it added.

Beijing has also sought to internationalize the yuan, also known as the renminbi, and make it a more attractive alternative to the US dollar.

"In conclusion, predicting which currency will be dominant in the future is uncertain, but it is likely that the world will see a shift towards a more multipolar currency system, in which several currencies play a significant role, rather than one dominant currency," ChatGPT predicted.

The response is notable in that ChatGPT's knowledge base only extends to the end of 2021, meaning that last year's moves away from the US dollar didn't factor into its prediction.

In 2022, the US and its Western allies froze Russia's foreign exchange reserves and kicked it out of the SWIFT financial system in response to Moscow's war on Ukraine.

Since then, attempts to erode the dollar's dominance have emerged, including Russia and China opening talks last year to develop a new reserve currency with other BRICS countries as well as an effort by Russia and Iran to create a cryptocurrency backed by gold.

China is also pressing Middle East countries to make oil deals in the yuan instead of the dollar, and analysts have said the rise of a so-called petroyuan will gain momentum. And Bloomberg reported over the past week that large Indian refiners are shifting away from the US dollar in order to purchase Russian crude.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT's currency prediction contrasts with that of "Dr. Doom" economist Nouriel Roubini, who wrote in the Financial Times recently that a bipolar currency system will emerge dominated by the dollar and the yuan.

Shieldbugs found in the Carlisle area of Cumbria, August to December 2014: Survey Data.

In Section 3 of the text associated with the shieldbug photo-montages, I suggested that the reason I managed to find so many shieldbug species late in the season may have been due to the simple fact that I kept on looking for them when more experienced recorders would have given up for the year. That my bug-hunting activities were continued with undiminished enthusiasm till the end of the monitoring period (8 December) can be seen from the above chart: This shows the total amount of time spent, the number of different sites visited, and the number of different species found during each week of the survey. In fact the 9.25 hours spent over the final week is the median value for the 14 weeks, and only slightly less than the mean value.

It's interesting to note that eight of the nine species recorded over the period of the survey were found during the second week alone - the exception being the Blue Shieldbug which was only found once, during week 14. As previously noted, till I started on this project my shieldbug tally for the preceding FIVE YEARS was just five species!

The fact that three species - the Green, Blue and Gorse Shieldbug - were found during the last week of the survey raises the question of why didn't I continue beyond 8 December? In fact I did! The first two species were found in a small plantation of oak trees in Kingmoor Sidings, and this area was searched on three further occasions without any luck. The Gorse shieldbug was one of four found in Finglandrigg Wood during an extensive 2-hour search on 8 December, and although I'm pretty sure I'd have been able to find the odd one even later in the month, there seemed little point when this species is so abundant here.

NOTES ON CHART

There are a number of minor points relating to the chart data which are unlikely to be of interest to anyone else, but I feel obliged to record anyway:

1. For convenience the starting point was taken as 2/09/14 as opposed to 30/08/14, and so the first week was from 2/09/14 - 8/09/14 with the final week being from 2/12/14 - 8/12/14.

2. The sites visited only include those specified in Section 2 of the text associated with the photo-montages.

3. The data used in the chart were derived directly from my wildlife diary and so were not subject to the sifting process involved in the derivation of the enveloping records sent to the CBDC. So the site and species numbers may not be fully consistent with the CBDC data (this is of no consequence in context).

4. The estimate of the time spent each week on the survey is the best I could do, but should only be considered as indicative. For example if several sites were visited in a single day, in general only the time of arrival at the first destination and the time of departure from the final destination would have been noted, and I've not bothered to account for the time taken in transit between sites; additionally only a rough correction was (or, in fact, could be) made for time spent at any "non-shieldbug" sites during such days.

The former Australian federal government (Liberal National Party aka the Australian Trump Republican Party) in power during the Covid lockdown years of 2020/21 tried to implement a 'cash ban law' banning cash transactions by individuals and businessed over $10000.

There are moves being made to re-start a process to introduce such a law under the new federal government elected in May 2022.

Metidiocerus rutilans leafhopper (female) in the Kingmoor sidings Nature Reserve, Carlisle, 6 December 20.

I really wasn't expecting to find anything here today, especially as it was cold and not particularly sunny. So I was delighted when I found what I thought was a new leafhopper on what remains of a recently vandalised fence surrounding a small seasonal pond in a wooded area of the reserve (see later photo).

However, when I got home and looked through my Flickr page I realised that it was probably the same species I'd photographed a few miles away in Kingmoor South on 7 December 18, almost exactly two years ago! As I hadn't managed to identify this earlier sighting I didn't hold out much hope of coming up with a definitive ID. However, despite the poor light I managed to get some much better shots using my DCR-150 macro adapter, and by resting my camera on the fence for stability I even managed to get a usable facial shot at higher magnification (Photo 3).

Thankfully identification then turned out to be straightforward, and the sighting was verified by iRecord the following day:

www.britishbugs.org.uk/homoptera/Cicadellidae/Idiocerus_r...

As noted on the British Bugs website, this species is mainly found in southern Britain, and there are only a handful of records currently shown on NBN Atlas and iRecord for the northern half of the country. It's also believed to be the first record for VC70 (Cumberland) and the second for Cumbria (Cumberland and Westmorland).

I certainly can't recall seeing one of these before, and it's quite distinctive with its first antennal segment being bright red. I've no idea how common it is in north Cumbria now that the CBDC have withdrawn county data from NBN Atlas, but there are only a few records shown for the bordering county of Northumberland.

It's only 4-5mm in length though, and so I guess it's still pretty easy to miss.

Chinese Researchers Propose Asian Digital Currency to Reduce Reliance on US Dollar

China Suggests Minting Asia-Wide Digital Yuan Underpinned by Distributed Ledger Technology

Chinese government researchers have proposed the introduction of a new digital currency in Asia in order to reduce the region’s dependence on the U.S. fiat money. The common coin would also help safeguard financial stability while enhancing regional monetary cooperation, they say, quoted by the South China Morning Post this week.

According to Song Shuang, Liu Dongmin, and Zhou Xuezhi from the Institute of World Economics and Politics under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the digital token would be pegged to a basket of 13 currencies, including the Chinese yuan, Japanese yen, South Korean won, and those of the 10 members of ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Weighting for each could be similar to that of the International Monetary Fund’s special drawing rights that serve as an international reserve asset, the report details. Distributed ledger technology could be employed to underpin the proposed currency. Such an approach would aim to prevent the dominance of any one of the participating countries.

“More than 20 years of deepened economic integration in East Asia has laid a good foundation for regional currency cooperation. The conditions for setting up the Asian yuan have gradually formed,” the researchers wrote in an article published in August by the World Affairs journal — an edition affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and then posted online in late September.

China Likely to Lead New Asian Digital Currency Project if It Gains Support

This isn’t the first initiative to create a regional currency in Asia. Other examples include the proposal of Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad made during the 1997 Asian financial crisis, which he repeated in 2019, as well as the Japan-led Asian Development Bank’s project for an Asian Currency Unit (ACU) from 2006.

The latest initiative, if realized, is likely to be led by China, which is currently the world’s second-largest economy and is constantly expanding the pilot area for its own sovereign digital currency, the digital yuan. The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) recently announced that e-CNY payments had surpassed 100 billion yuan (almost $14 billion) in 360 million transactions by the end of August.

Although the Chinese government maintains that its central bank digital currency (CBDC) is primarily intended for domestic use — about two dozen major cities participate in the testing with over 5.6 million merchants accepting the coin — the PBOC is also exploring cross-border settlements, together with the monetary authorities of Hong Kong, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates.
