“The splendour falls on castle walls and snowy summits old in story.” - Alfred Lord Tennyson

Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most iconic images of Scotland. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic mountain scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish highlands.

Helmsley

The first castle at Helmsley was built in the early 12th century by Walter Espec, who also founded nearby Rievaulx Abbey and Kirkham Priory.

It was later modernised by Robert de Roos and his descendants. It was converted into living quarters and a luxurious mansion by the Manners family.

The castle faced its greatest challenge during the English Civil War. Held for King Charles, It endured a three month siege before Cromwell's men blew up the Great Keep, slicing it in half with the explosion.

Helmsley Castle is now in the care of English Heritage. It has recently undergone a extensive makeover making it more accessible to visitors. There is a new visitor centre with a range of exhibitions covering the social and domestic, as well as the military, aspects of the fortress.

Castle Doorwerth is located on the banks of the Rhine River, between Wageningen and Arnhem. The castle’s immediate surroundings are beautiful; it is located at the point where the steep wooded lateral moraine of the Veluwezoom merges into the broad floodplains of the Lower Rhine. In between the two geological areas lies the beautiful medieval castle, surrounded by abundant moats. The castle is mentioned in historical documents dating back as far as 1260, making it one of the oldest castles in Holland.

The oldest tree in Holland

Since 1280, the castle has grown to become a picturesque complex of buildings with a ward and an outer ward. During the Second World War, the castle suffered major damage, and after undergoing restorations for a period of 37 years, it is once again the beautiful water castle it used to be.

One of the oldest trees in Holland is also located on the Castle Doorwerth grounds. The trunk of the Robinia (acacia) tree has a circumference of seven meters (almost 23 feet), and was planted around the year 1600. Two similar trees were destroyed during the Battle of Arnhem.

Peleș Castle is a Neo-Renaissance castle in the Carpathian Mountains, near Sinaia, in Prahova County, Romania, on an existing medieval route linking Transylvania and Wallachia, built between 1873 and 1914. Its inauguration was held in 1883. It was constructed by King Carol I.

According to Wikipedia; the Conwy Railway Bridge carries the North Wales coast railway line across the River Conwy between Llandudno Junction and the town of Conwy. The wrought iron tubular bridge, which is now Grade I listed, was built in the 19th century by Robert Stephenson. It is the last surviving example of this type of design by Stephenson after the Britannia Bridge across the Menai Strait was destroyed in a fire in the 1970s.

Warkworth Castle is a ruined medieval building in the town of the same name in the English county of Northumberland. The town and castle occupy a loop of the River Coquet, less than a mile from England's north-east coast.

the ruins of Craigend Castle on one of the walks in Mugdock Park between Milngavie reservoir and the Campsie Hills, not far from Glasgow. According to Wiki this country house was at one point built up by the Smith family, who founded the great Glasgow booksellers John Smith & Son, which I remember fondly, many floors of all sorts of books, piles more in corners between the shelves, a bookseller once patronised by Robert Burns among others across a couple of centuries until the arrival of the large chain bookstores killed it and there went 200 years of tradition replaced by identikit stores that sold coffee and retailed books like they were tins of beans...

Conwy Castle North Wales was built between 1283 and 1289 during King Edward 1's second campaign in North Wales. Conwy replaced Deganwy Castle, an earlier stronghold built by Henry lll that had been destroyed by Llewelyn the Last in 1263.

The Royal Castle in Bobolice was built during the reign of Kazimierz III the Great, in the second half of the 14th century, most probably around 1350-1352. It was part of the defensive system of royal fortresses which protected the western border of the state on the Silesian side, and was known as the Eagles' Nests.

Located a few miles away from Wick in Caithness, this is a dramatic castle perched on a cliff. The castle is slowly being restored but the main work appears to be stabilising he castle to stop it falling into the sea.

The camera's only job is to get out of the way of making photographs.

In the second half of the 19th century Earl Granville did much to improve the grounds, laying out the gravel walk west of the castle now known as the Broadwalk, flanked by herbaceous borders and great yew hedges.

The hedge along the Broadwalk has been allowed to assume the lumpy-bumpy form of a dropped blancmange, which must be a nightmare to clip but is very charming to look at. The misshapen yews lend the garden a sense of antiquity befitting such a venerable castle.

MY THANKS TO ALL WHO VISIT AND COMMENT IT IS APPRECIATED

we had a little outing up to Warwick today...

The village and civil parish of Caslte Rising is located a few north of Kings Lynn in the district of West Norfolk.

The castle is situated at the southern end of the village and was built soon after 1138 by William d'Aubigny II, who had risen through the ranks of the Anglo-Norman nobility to become the Earl of Arundel.

It is one of the best preserved medieval castle keeps in England.

Have always viewed this stand out alone castle from afar while sailing on the Forth or from the Fife coast opposite.

Situated in the grounds of the Dalmeny Estate near Dalmeny House along side the John Muir coastal Path/ National Cycle Route 76.

Great stay in Bamburgh, the weather held up for us, though there was a bitterly cold wind. I really recommend this small town for a visit, very friendly people. The Mizen Head served great sea food, and the guides at the castle were incredibly friendly and helpful. The Lord Crewe Hotel offered very comfortable accommodation, including the addition of an upgrade without a request. There's a great deal of interest for all manner of folk, from beach lovers, to nature watchers, and eons of history from the vikings to the present day owners of the castle.

We even witnessed a wee bit of filming for an upcoming version of Macbeth (one of my favourite Shakespearian plays). Rumour has it that Michael Fastbender is playing the lead role. We were too far away from the 'sentries' and powder smoke happenings to confirm this!

Anyway, back to urban living is a bit of a shock to my wilderness loving soul.
