The Large Cavalry Battle (1645)

Salvator Rosa (Naples 1615 - 1673 Rome)

Canvas, 229 x 345 cm

Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien

Salvator Rosa "was one of the first painters who did not glorify or idealize war, but depicted it as a horrific carnage. [...]

The Large Cavalry Battle was created in Florence, presuamably for a patron from the circle of the Medici. Together with two additional, monumental battle pictures that Rosa produced for Ferdinando II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany and for King Louis XIV respectively, it counts among the most ambitious works by this nonconformist artist." (Information text in the museum)

I did not feed the insect to the venus flytrap. I just happened upon this scene when I walked out onto my deck.

It would be easy to get stuck on this first morning adventure in Sweden. To get stuck on the first day in fact. Our sunrise shoot at Havstensklippan was only the start of the first of several very productive days in Scandinavia, firstly here along the west coast of Sweden, then later in the mountains of Norway. Usually I’ll only have one story to tell from a single outing, but there was so much happening in just a couple of hours up here that morning that it’s impossible to keep a lid on the smorgasbord of weather that was boiling over the sides of the pot.

What was immediately clear was that this well chosen location had a lot of possibilities. Below us lay salty Havstensfjorden, spreading across the landscape in a north-south direction, chock full of forested islands, and beyond this, the Uddevalla Bridge, which perhaps had been the main draw in coming here for sunrise. At our feet was an expanse of textured rock, dotted with tufts of orange grass and small drifts of colourful heather. Then there was that distinctive group of pines on the right hand side. Surely I had to find a way of including them? Any views to the west and the open sea were blockaded by the thickly forested slope we’d stomped through to get here. Still, and unusually for me, this was a sunrise shoot. We could worry about west facing views this evening. Meanwhile, in the half light I began to try and make a decision as to where I’d plant the tripod before waiting for things to get started.

This was the second composition I found on the lofty platform of rock where from where we watched the soft orange band of light on the eastern horizon gradually bloom and burst in spectacular fashion across the landscape. The first had also included the group of tall and wispy pines, but it also featured a lot of dead space on the left hand side. It was only as I stood there drinking my coffee, contemplating lofty thoughts and wondering what had captured Steve’s attention over there on the other side of the pines that I noticed the far more generous clump of purple heather lurking in a small hollow to my right. I’d just clamber down and size it up and, oh yes that looks a lot better. I don’t really know why, but I hadn’t even been expecting heather. A month earlier it had taken centre stage at home for a while, and perhaps I thought I was done with it. But no, here was a brief reprise on a Swedish rock. All I needed was for the sun to rise high enough to light the pines and the heather, and then we’d be in business. With that in mind, I returned to the sunrise itself, which was drawing ever closer. I’d come back to this one a bit later. Meanwhile, things were kicking off in style, starting with the sun coming up behind the southern strut of the handsome Uddevalla Bridge.

Forty-five fun filled minutes and sixty frantically taken shots later I was standing in this spot again. The pines were positively glowing, a gently diffused morning sun reaching through the showers to pick out the trunks and breathe life into them. By now Steve had joined me, keen to see what had drawn my attention before I raced over to gatecrash his rainbow party just after sunrise. But while the trees were quite beautifully illuminated in the pale wash of sunshine, the heather lay stubbornly in the shadows. It seemed quite clear that the sun wasn’t going to rise high enough to spread its magic here for quite some time either. So I accepted the compromise and took the shots anyway. Besides which, another heavy squall was charging up the fjord towards us, and while the first one had scudded by harmlessly to the east, this one clearly had other intentions. We zipped up our coats, popped the shower caps on the cameras, and braced ourselves for impact.

A lot of images were taken in this crazy couple of hours when the late summer sun rose through the rain and filled the landscape with a filmy haze of greens, yellows and purples. With so much going on it was hard to stay focussed on any one scene for long, and we chased around the headland in pursuit of the bouncing light, reacting to rainbows and rainclouds, with brief pauses for the odd shot that had been spotted before sunrise, such as this one. Joyous carnage indeed. I might have struggled with the very early start, but I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. What a fantastic introduction to a country I’d never visited until now. With its first blows, Sweden had delivered a knockout punch. The morning madness at Havstensklippan was going to be a tough act to follow.

We survived Atraken, but we still lost. They said it was a "stalemate" but in my book anything other than a win is a defeat. Havoc got promoted to lieutenant for "showing lead", it's not that I don't like it but he just got into the 253rd and he is already promoted. Lucky him... I hope that this mission goes well because if not I don't think

I could face myself in the mirror if I lost Valor.

Shot on Agfa VistaPlus ISO 200 with a Smena Symbol, 10 July 2018

Our squad pushed threw the stream as artillery hit over our heads. While crossing the stream we lost several to an X-wing, we didn't check the water density and acid level. Our temperature seal broke and most of us lost our night vision due to water passing the seal in our helmets. The mud around us slowed our pace to a staggering slow speed. Upon the shore we took more casualties. I could hear the faint sound of the imperial alarm warning us we where retreating. Our squad leaders beacon had been totaled when we crossed. We panicked shouting and looking for others. The familiar sound of imperial dropships leaving were heard. Once realizing we had been left it was fight or flight. My squad chose flight. Live another day. Survive on our own.

Seeing carnage unfold

.

On this day, I was at a Least Tern colony at sunrise, hoping to capture the newly born chicks running about the sand. The colony seemed to be tense evident by the chatter that was much louder than in previous days, and much of the colony was up in the air. After a period of time shooting some chicks, I found the source of the colony’s alarm. A Red Fox had invaded them, creating a mass frenzy among the birds. I watched helplessly as the fox strutted about the colony sniffing the ground to find unhatched eggs and then eating them whole. I assumed the fox was chasing down chicks as well. Although I knew what I was observing was part of the circle of life, in my heart I hoped the chicks could hide from this predator. Surprisingly, none of the parent birds were dive bombing the fox to thwart it. Left unimpeded, the fox created a scene of carnage across the colony. This photograph captures the tragic moment a Least Tern chick, barely a few days old, is devoured by a hungry fox. So sad, but so evident and telling of the fragility of wildlife.

This area of planted woodland became exposed when Natural Resources Wales cleared the adjacent area. Predictably, unaccustomed to high winds, windthrow damage followed.

First time snowploughs (the big boys) in the Mearns. Snow this bad, well, it happens but usually lays with no drifts. 2026, bringing the challenges. Drifts left and right between Laurencekirk and Portlethan had to be worked on twice today. Crews of 0Z01 37706 had the full wack thrown at them. By Portlethan, 706 developed windscreen wiper faults, loss of power and re-fuelling. Bo’ness TMD for some TLC.

As 706 struggled Laurencekirk to Aberdeen, request for ploughs to do a once over was given. Original route was to Dundee, line was deemed suited. Turn back time was at Montrose. Question of what’ll the snow storms bring tomorrow, another yellow (purple on the radar) for carnage again.

Not banking on the North East being normal by the weekend at the latest. This shot, well worth it, 8 mile bike ride from Montrose with road conditions at the time being near impossible!

I got this few weeks ago, I forgot to show off.

Never cared too much for the Alien-Symbiote-Spidey, but the anti-hero/villain symbiotes were always my favorites to read. I was always drawn towards the Cletus Kasidy character ever since his debut in the early 90s. Now that I'm in possession of this figure, this would complete my collection of the anti-hero symbiotes.

I think I am done now...

At least, until Flash Thompson's Agent Venom is ever made.

Maximum.

I shot this a few weeks ago when we went to the fair and watched the demolition derby. Nothing like some good old fashioned redneck fun!

It's good to have this loaner camera but not having MY camera has given me a reason to go back through all the images I have taken and not done anything with.

Lots to go through.

Happy Sunday y'all ;-)

I was messing with some armor combos and this head/hat combo just came into being. Couldn't think of a better use than just Carnage, so here it is!

I replaced the desk picture with something a little nicer. If you preferred that one for some reason, it's still up on my Instagram.

Updated Version

An updated version of my concept Carnage (which I honestly thought I posted like over a year ago but it's from January because time is broken).

I had the idea to use this headpiece with Injustice Superman again with the new Ninjago armor but it just gave him a huge neck. I did find a use still but you'll have to wait a sec to see it! (Hint: it's another figure of mine that uses this mask piece as neck armor)

Shouts to Colt 45, Sian E, Hert, Keen 53, iben, Dred and Akroe

First of this guy was super fun to make. For his mouth cut a smile with a knife then painted it pink. The axe hand was pretty easy, I cut the clip of an axe price and cut the hand of leaving the part that goes into the arm and glued it together.

this day had a lot of bad luck and good luck taking these shots.

I was almost on location when I realised I hadn't charged my backup set of batteries for the battery grip, and the two I had in there were flashing low. once I set up not sure if I was even going to get any shots off, the batteries that were in there went flat and the "change batteries" sign came on!

I changed the set over and the backups where flashing low also :S

and when I connected my shutter remote, the batteries where flat in that too!

in the end I did some smart setup. I turned everything off, got everything focused and composed to how I want it, then turned the camera on but turned the display off and used the 2 sec timer and a 30sec exposure for the images shot. bit short for what im used to but I am happy with the results... im happy I got any images at all.

in the end I was able to get a few different shots off, all up I got what I set out for in about 10 shots of 30sec exposure for each shot :)

this is back at one of my fav spots during a delayed sunrise

I've been thinking about doing something similar to Andrew and upload a vig (most likely star wars) every couple of days (2-3). It'll be fun to see how long I can keep that before I run out of time or inspiration :P

Anyway, if I were to take suggestions, what would you guys want to see in a vig next?

As always C&C is appreciated and TFVAHAGD!
