The packaged, common, tourist experience becomes beautiful, years later, in my memory. While on my 1st trip to Siagon in 1999, my buddies and I signed up for the all-day Cuu chi tunnels and Cao Dai temple tour. It was a surprisingly packaged,“load‘em up on the bus, and move‘em out” experience for'99 Vietnam. When we arrived at the Cao Dai temple we were by no means the only tourists. As the religious ceremonies began there was so many tourists and“gawkers” all crammed into the balconies, all trying to take photographs (most with their flash turned on); I thought for a moment that I was in some Hollywood starlet's press entourage! I decided to forget about the main event, and tried to find some nooks and crannies that offered a quieter perspective. Now, when I look at these photos, I don't remember crowds, and pushy tour guides so much as the quiet and fervent mediation of those parishioners that were away from the big crowds.
