As soon as I noticed Jessica walking down the sidewalk in front of me I wanted to snap a street photo. It was Jessica's distinctive personal sense of style that sold me. I asked permission and Jessica was willing to give me a quick pose or two. I used a realistic approach in my edit of this shot. I like how this one came out, Ms. J! Janet and I were two strangers out walking on the sidewalk of Canada's capital city, Ottawa when I asked if I could take her picture. Janet, a model, kindly gave her time and posed brilliantly for me. I captured what I could- it was all so quick. I gave this photo edit a soft focus look. I like this image of Janet, an artistic edit rather than a realistic one. Thanks Ms. Janet.

Just imagine the decisive moments Henri Cartier-Bresson could have captured with radio-triggered external flash!

This is the basic gear I took to my first roller derby bout at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium since 2019 (since COVID) It’s also my first chance to shoot center track at the Civic, and the first time to not have a Leica M with me for derby (since 2008).
The cameras are a Leica Q2 (leaf shutter with highest flash synchronization speed of 1/500th) and a Leica SL. The two M-mount lenses for the SL are the Leica 90mm F2 APO Summicron and the Konica 60mm F1.2 Hexanon. The SL is on a shoulder strap at my right hip, and I used the Oberwerth George bag (left hip) to hold the M lens not on the SL and the Q2.
Up to four external flashes (of various Metz and Leica flavors) are radio triggered by Phottix Strato II Multi triggers (4 receivers and 2 transmitters in the photos). The flashes are mounted on three Manfrotto light stands with one light stand holding a super-clamp and umbrella stand to hold a second flash. The flash discharges are powered by Godox Propac PB 960 Li-Ion batteries. I have taped “push the button” on them to remind me to turn them on AND to make sure the cables are seated properly so the flash uses these beefy batteries instead of quickly draining the double A batteries in the flash units themselves. I also brought my little Nissin i400 flash for on-camera fill, but I didn’t actually use it that much.
I’ve included a map of the Civic to illustrate the lighting set up (civic_lighting). The jammers start each jam behind the jammer line and the rest of the skaters start between the pivot and jammer line. They skate counter clockwise through turn 1, turn 2, turn 3, and turn 4. My light stands are placed behind the highest seats above turn 1, turn 2 and turn3 (L-A, L-B, L-C/D). The numbers with circles around them are my preferred shooting positions.
Janet, a pro model, and I met by chance. I took some photos, sent them to Janet. Then Ms. J. called eager to shoot more photos with Mikey G! What a nice compliment. So we met up here, I shot 400 pics and chose about 40 to edit.

How many of us know of a biker who, while making a left turn across oncoming lanes of auto traffic, was hit by an oncoming car whose driver 'never saw him'? I do.
