Winter has arrived...and with startling suddenness. The lake literally froze overnight with temperatures heading into the single digits, below zero forecast for early next week. In fact, wind chills are forecast for -37F /-38C. I've never understood why these two measurements ultimately even out, but a bit chilly by any calculation.

Malbork Castle was built in the 13th century by The Order of the Teutonic Knights of St. Mary's Hospital in Jerusalem. It is the biggest brick castle complex in Europe and according to some calculations ( no doubt disputed by others! ) - the biggest castle in the world by surface area ( 143,691 sq meters ) - www.touropia.com/largest-castles-in-the-world/

I wish I had a chance to take a photo of this magnificent structure at blue hour, with the night-time illuminations on, but in the summer months it becomes dark only at around 10pm, so it was just too much to ask of my travel companions to hang around as it took us over an hour to get there.

Mum... i done all the calculations and I am soooo.... sorry, but we can't afford a cat.

Khao Sam Roi Yot was probably where King Mongkut hosted European guests on 18 August 1868 to observe a total solar eclipse. The king was interested in astronomy and had calculated the date and location of the eclipse himself. His calculations proved better—by about two seconds—than those of French astronomers, who acknowledged his accuracy. He contracted malaria, possibly during that event, and died on 1 October.

Lowell Bridge is a covered bridge in Lowell, Oregon, United States. The original bridge was built in 1907. The current bridge was built in 1945. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Before the Lowell Bridge was constructed, pioneer Amos Hyland settled on the Middle Fork Willamette River in 1874, and established the town of Lowell, which he named after his birthplace of Lowell, Maine.

An accident occurred in 1945 when a truck caused major damage to the bridge. It was replaced by the current bridge, which is the widest in the state. In 1953, in preparation for the flooding expected to be caused by the Dexter Dam in two years, the entire bridge was raised 6 feet (1.8 m), and the floor replaced. Dexter Dam inundated the area, creating Dexter Reservoir, when it was completed in 1955. The engineers' water level calculations proved to be correct: the water clearance was about 2 feet (0.6 m).

The Mesta (Bulgarian Места), or the Nestos (Greek Νέστος) is a river in Bulgaria and northern Greece and is one of the five major rivers in Greece and Bulgaria.

In Greece, it currently marks the border between the geographical region of Macedonia in the west and Thrace in the east.

The length of the Nestos is 230 to 243 km (depending on the length calculation) of which 104 to 130 km are in Greece and 113 to 126 km in Bulgaria.

The Nestos rises in the mountain massif Rila in Bulgaria in the north, and flows in the south into the Aegean Sea (more precisely into the Thracian Sea) in the form of a delta north of the island of Thasos.

It flows in a north-south direction first through the mountain ranges of the western Rhodope Mountains and the Falakro.

In Bulgaria the course of the Nestos, forms valleys in the Rila and Pirin mountains.

On July 12th, 2021, the three-day old Moon was close to the brightest “star” in the sky - planet Venus - as seen in the western sky, an astronomical phenomenon called conjunction. These events, including the Moon and bright planets, are quite common. If you zoom a lot into the photo, you may see the much dimmer planet Mars, just to the left and a little below Venus - I could not see it with the naked eye, due to its proximity to the much brighter Venus. Of course, these three worlds were very much separated in space - at the time of this conjunction, the Moon was about 387,000 Km away from the Earth, Venus was about 214 million Km and Mars about 372 million Km away. And a little above and to left of the Moon, the star named Regulus (The Lion’s heart) lies at 78 light years away or about 2 billion times further than the Moon! Better to stop these calculations…enjoy your summer!

Arrived in plenty of time for sunrise and took a few shots but noticed these yellow blurry streaks when I zoomed in.

 

Realised a ship was coming down the canal from Stanlow and was then doing mental calculations how fast tugs pull the ships because it was dot on sunrise and I didn't want to miss it.

 

Fortunately they move pretty swiftly despite their size and whilst it was exactly where the sun was due to rise when it was sunrise time it didn't take long to pass and it took another 10 minutes or so for the sun to clear the far bank that separates The Mersey from the MSC.

 

The cloud doesn't look great here but it soon blew over for one of the nicest if not most colourful sunrises I've seen here. It takes around 5-10mins for the wake from the tugs and ship to calm back down and for the water to return to where the reflections work.

 

Lovely morning, bit twitchy at the thought of the only time I don't want to see a ship here but it was a really nice hour spent afterwards.

This image of the female eastern bluebird was taken late in the day. The setting sun was shining down on her and displaying her wonderful colors that are not always seen so readily seen. I am going to miss them when the babies are ready to fledge . I f my calculations are right it should be around the 21 st . Hard to be sure when you are not able to monitor the bird house. I have grown to love them and see them often !! Praying for safe fledging for the young !!!!

This Great Egret was flying in with nesting material and made a wrong calculation when landing. Still managed to hang on to the stick it flew in with.

Last Friday, coming back from work, I found a window grille with a lot of rust and I thought to take some photos with my mobile, in case they were useful for this Monday, when I saw this insect (tipula) perched on the nodule of a grille. I put my scarf behind him to change the background, which was the color of the fence, and took some shots. I did not have a ruler to measure, but in those cases, I am governed by my index finger and according to my calculations, the diagonal of the photo is less than 7 cm.

Super Spectrum RYYB Sensor

 

A new generation of camera sensor RYYB has been dashed out to replace over forty years old traditional RGGB (Red-Green-Green-Blue) sensors. Huawei P30 Pro Smartphone makes a history, it is the first smartphone use RYYB (Red-Yellow-Yellow-Blue) colour scheme for it's camera sensors. It even set a record in camera history.

 

The question is, RGGB use the base Red Green Blue elements to recover all the original image colour from the sensor, but how can RYYB colour scheme reproduces an image without using green colour element? It is a Super Spectrum RYYB Sensor. Huawei said they use a special algorithm that use subtractive colour mixing calculations to recover all the colours. Actually they just simply invert the Yellow colour to form a green colour.

 

The advantage of using two Yellow elements is that it increase the total incident light of the sensor by 40%, therefore Huawei smartphone is able to boost it's camera ISO to a record breaking of ISO 409,600. It is a Super ISO phone.

Or - an accidental discovery.

 

There is a certain satisfaction in discovering through experience the underlying reality of something we take for granted. I mean, we all know what a mile is right - 1760 yards. Well, actually no, it wasn’t that at all, that calculation must have come later, the mile stood alone prior to that.

 

On my long walks with my guide dog, and later with just my white stick, to pass the time I used to count my paces - sad I know, but I can’t see the scenery, so it kept me awake. I used to count 100 paces on just one foot, on each finger and thumb, and when I had done all digits - 1000 paces, I would transfer a coin to another pocket. As time went on, on certain walks , if there was a marker nearby like a large tree, a road or whatever. - something I could pick up, I would mark the 1000 paces or sometimes 500. One day I went in the car with my wife to see how far a particular walk was and as we drove I asked the distance at the markers I had accumulated, and to my surprise, they coincided almost exactly with 1 mile, or half mile intervals! The fact is - and you can verify this, 1000 strides on one foot is one mile, it is very accurate, to within 20 or 30 paces for me. I am of average height and stride. One hand half a mile, two hands a full mile.

 

This must be how the distance of one mile came into being, people in times of yore, needed to know how long a journey would take and therefore a standard was set by which anyone could gauge their progress. All you needed was 10 fingers and some stones in a pocket.

 

As a small boy I can remember seeing very old stone roadside markers - milestones, ’40 miles to London’ or 50 miles to London’ or which ever town, they must be all gone now. Somebody - with a pocket full of stones - must have paced those markers, 100 paces x 10 fingers x 10 stones = 10 miles. He would then leave some sort of marker by the wayside, and later along comes the horse and cart with the large stone markers and drops them off at each marked point.

 

The measurement of a yard has nothing to do with a mile. The name tells us that, it was obviously a measurement for small pieces of land and fields a *yard*. One day somebody said I wonder how many yardsticks make one of those mile things? They had someone - probably several people walk the mile, then lay down a yard stick at the starting point and discovered you had to flip it 1759 times to reach the mile.

 

So a mile is not a measurement of yards and feet, it is a measurement of hands and feet, and that photograph above, of all the cow parsley lining the road was taken precisely 3500 paces (on one foot) from my front door, or exactly, three and a half miles……

WILD WOMAN SISTERHOOD

He paused for a few seconds almost as if he was calculating the route he would be taking, then he went bounding up the steep rocks to disappear from view.

New Cathedral (official name: Catedral Metropolitana de la Inmaculada Concepción). Its towers are truncated due to a calculation error of the architect. Had it been constructed as planned, the foundation would not bear the weight of the full towers.

 

In spite of the architect's immeasurable mistake, the New Cathedral of Cuenca, completed in 1975, is a monumental work of faith. A combination of Romanesque Revival and Neo-Gothic in style, the church's blue and white domes have become a symbol for the city. Its façade is made of alabaster and local marble, while the floor of the nave is covered with pink marble, brought from Carrara (Italy).

 

At its inauguration, the newly constructed Cathedral could accommodated 9,000 out of Cuenca's 10,000 inhabitants at that time.

According to Google Map’s calculation, from my photo location to downtown San Francisco, the distance is about 18.8 miles. Of course, if viewed from above the San Francisco Bay directly, it would be shorter than that. On a cloudy day afternoon, this harmony of the seas scenery is a touching sense of sight for me.

Yes this is the actual slide rule that I used in the mid 1960's. Believe it or not, these were used at the time by the NASA engineers and supplied the mathematical calculations that launched the first man to the moon.

 

The background is a box that held greeting cards. It also is very old, and I just couldn't part with it.

 

And yes I was a nerd and proud of it.

Construction works started in 1885 and lasted for almost a century. This building combines many architecture styles, but Romanesque Revival is predominant. The cathedral is surmounted by three giant domes covered by striking blue and white glazed tile from Czechoslovakia. Its stained glass windows were created by Spanish artist Guillermo Larrazábal.

 

Its towers are truncated due to a calculation error of the architect. If they had been raised to their planned height, the foundation of this Church to the Immaculate Conception, would not have been able to bear the weight. In spite of the architect's immense mistake, the skyline of its domes has become a symbol for the city. Its facade is made of alabaster and local marble, while the floor is covered with pink marble, brought from Carrara (Italy). When the Cathedral was first constructed 9,000 out of Cuenca's 10,000 inhabitants could fit in the building.

The Cathedral of Cuenca has six domes that are on the pre-ministry and the Central Nave. They are divided into three highs and three lows that are interspersed in their location. all domes have a flashlight inside. The three high domes and one of the low ones are covered by tile while the others maintain the brick structure.

 

The tall domes have a Renaissance style, the largest is on the Cruiser and has an inner diameter of 12 meters and has a height of 53 meters.

There are two types of domes:

 

Low: constituted by spherical shells, seated directly on the arches.

 

Tall: linked or seated on the arches by means of four spherical triangles (called pendentives). On these pendentives sits a ring, from which a cylinder is generated (called drum) that is crowned by a vault banked. At the top of the dome, there is the Lantern, of Renaissance architectural design.

For everyone who was interested in the price of gas in the picture with the pumps.. That style of pump was unable to go above .99 cents a gallon. The unleaded is the only one left with numbers and when blown up it shows .69 cents a gallon.. which means the regular was most likely priced at .59 cents a gallon.. By my calculations the station closed some time in the early 80s.

Right before sunrise in the Richmond lagoons I had a few encounters with the slightly rare blue morph Green Frog. This is a variation caused by deficiencies in the yellow pigment cells, called xanthophores. The blue pigment cells that combine with the yellow, called iridophores, are present, causing blue light to reflect.

 

There is no scientific calculation of the frequency of these blue morphs, but I have seen one to two percent cited in a few places.

 

In this case, I was so preoccupied with the blue that I omitted the other field marks that help distinguish the Green Frog from the Bullfrog: the dorsal ridges that run only part way down the frog’s back. Most of the other colouring on Green Frogs is variable, including being partly brown, yellow or white undersides, etc. The males have tympana larger than their eyes, while the females are roughly the same size; males also have bright yellow throats in breeding season.

 

I was also preoccupied with not stepping on it. Green Frogs move significant distances out of the water, hunting for small land-based insects. In the early morning one has to be extremely careful, as frogs and snakes and even turtles, hunting in the low early light, will freeze in the camouflaged setting. The second cup of coffee in the dark before heading out helps in more ways than one.

 

This is a very common frog - blue morph excluded - in this part of the world, and its ‘gunk’ call, either singularly or a series, is a common early morning or late evening sound from wetland areas.

Sometimes a plan is completely not working out. Originally I wanted to shoot the rising moon with a completely different setting. I had checked all of my apps, visited the location and divined the direction of the moon with a compass. But then, when the mood was appearing at the night sky he didn't abide to my calculations and did rise a large bit aside. So I had to recompose my image on a distance of 10 to 15 km, in the dark, in less then five minutes. This is the result. What do You think.? I don't like the name of the image. If You have a better Idea, please tell me.

 

Manchmal geht ein Plan einfach nicht auf. Ursprünglich wollte ich den Mondaufgang in einer ganz anderen Kulisse fotografieren. Ich hatte alle Apps geckeckt, mir den Lokation genau angesehen und mit dem Kompass die Richtung des Mondes ermittelt. Als der dann am Nachthimmel erschien hielt er sich jedoch nicht an meine Berechnungen und ging ein großes Stück daneben auf. Also musste ich spontan die Komposition ändern, auf eine Entfernung von 10 - 15 km und im Dunkeln, in weniger als fünf Minuten. Das ist dann dabei heraus gekommen. Was haltet Ihr davon ? Ich mag den Namen des Fotos nicht wirklich. Ich bin offen für bessere Ideen.

Here's a photo that I've been meaning to share with you but only got to processing it today. Its a picture of Brisbane's casino across the water from South Bank in which the camera settings used were f/11, ISO 100 with a 10 second exposure time, 85mm Nikon prime lens.

 

In publishing this photo I wanted to introduce the handy ISO 6400 rule which can be useful your night time photography.

This rule helps you quickly determine our exposure by letting us know that 1 second @ ISO 6400 = 1 minute @ ISO 100.

 

What this means is that if you set your camera to Manual mode + set ISO to 6400, with Aperture X, 1 second Shutter Speed and take the photo, the exposure of your photo will be the same as if you had taken it with ISO 100, with the same Aperture X but a 1 minute Shutter Speed.

We can then do a calculation to find out how much exposure time we need for a photo at ISO 100 or 200 or 800 etc.

 

You may ask why this is useful? Here's the answer:

You may want to preview what a photo will look like at ISO 100 for those crazy 10 minute photos (stars, water, clouds can crazy things @ this exposure!) but not want to wait the whole 10 minutes and not want to shoot at a high ISO. In applying this rule you can set your ISO to 6400 and just take a 10 second photo to pop out this preview of how this photo would look at ISO 100 for 10 minutes. Or you could also use this rule to calculate that at ISO 200 you'd need a 5 minute time a photo that has this same exposure.

I saw this man who had looked at the window for a few minutes. He wanted to go in to make a purchase, perhaps a gift, but with the same pace he returned. He made quick calculations to decide whether he could buy or not. Unfortunately, today, buying a little thought becomes difficult and important.

I am doing some calculations before the Bl86 is gonna pass the M44 tomorrow morning. I will have a go shooting it as I recieved my replaced Vello from B&H today.
