Lunch time in Chicago and Cal's Liquors is a busy place. The original photo was taken in 1985. It's a real challenge to make a complex composition work. Van Buren & Wells

Best protea seen at our Cal Poly visit this afternoon. Very distinctive color patterns in the flower and those cool red beads along the leaf edges. No label found, but so distinctive that maybe someone will supply an ID?

Here he is, adorable bear!

Cal is #88 in my 100 Strangers Project. He lives in Yosemite and is a snow plow guy there but the most interesting thing about him was that when I asked him to be my stranger, he said yes because he was an artist and he understood my love for photography. I then asked him about his art. He is a wood sculptor. He is INCREDIBLY talented because we checked out his website. Golly gosh!!! Here it is so you can check it out too!

(unfortunately there was a fog around my lens because it was quite cold outside when I took the photo!)

In Pursuit of Spring is a tale of one man and his bicycle. It tells of a journey from Clapham Junction in London to the Quantock hills. Cally and his friend were inspired to follow the course described by Edward Thomas in his book.

Cally kindly sat while I took a couple portraits and waited for a moment so that I could get a shot of him with his bicycle before they set off again. He didn't want to take my card, as he was travelling light but his friend took one – so they will be able to get in touch for copies of the images.

When I mentioned that he would be my 375th stranger, Cally said that it was one of his favourite numbers.

Thank you Cally for stopping for me today. It was good to meet you. I hope that the rest of your journey went well.

My Callies have taken a beating over the past month. With all the rain, they are looking rather sparse.

'I apologise if I look a little less than my usual perfectly-groomed self, but I was held down against my will while oily, wet stuff was put in my ears. Naturally, I had to shake my head vigorously and kick out as much of it as I could, but my fur is still a little greasy around the ears. I think I heard someone say 'Hey, not over my dinner!!!', but it wasn't MY dinner, so I didn't care.'

Before she came to me Cally had untreated ear mites. Although she no longer has them they damaged her ears, so she gets a build up of wax every now and again and needs a quick dose of Canaural to sort it out. It does the job, but she hasn't thanked me for helping her yet. :))

That So-Cal feeling lingers in my bone. Immortalized in L.A. Confidential and the neon lit noir of Nicolas Winding Refn- Southern California has a forlorn charm like no other place in USA. It's hilly, obscure streets are an equal playground of the criminal and the supernatural. When I drive through Los Angeles, I feel like I will turn the corner and see in the distance, the dimly lit signboard of Club Silencio or a mangled hollywood starlet wrapped in red satin and crazy in the eyes.

If it was within my limits and control, I would not live anywhere else..but the perilous paradise that is So-Cal :)
