Westbound at Moore CA, the daily Salt Lake to Long Beach trailers working the east side of Cima Hill...
June 17, 2022: CSX manifest/freight train L712 (Atlanta, GA-Wauhatchie, TN) motors Northbound on the CSX W&A Subdivision just North of Kingston, GA in the unincorporated community of Halls with a C40-8W (Dash 8-40CW) GE in YN2 paint, leading a Union Pacific C45ACCTE (ES44AC) GE on a very steamy hot day in Northwest Georgia.
A pair of morning eastbounds were out of St. Paul on this particular morning and heading for the Altoona Sub. Following a loaded coke train from Roseport with a wingless ACe was the daily manifest to Altoona proper. With some delay at East St. Paul, I was able to walk up to this shot in Maplewood, which is a rather nice view. A trio of GE elephants lead the way.
A pair of yellow GEs, with a fairly clean rebuild on the front (rebuilt October 2024), leads a string of yellow TBOX boxcars around the Maury St Connector at Tower 26 in Houston.
The long cuts of boxcars are standard on the MSALI, forwarding freight from Mexico towards eastern markets. In the boxcars you'll find cases and cases of Modelo, Corona, and other Mexican beers brewed by Constellation Brands at their Nava, Coahuila brewery. It's a hop, skip, and a jump across the border from Eagle Pass, TX.

A pair of first generation C45ACCTE's make the slow grind up the alley as they keep command of a ninety car West Colton/ Mira Loma bound Manifest and loaded Autorack combination train.Once the head end of the train sets-out in track 202 with the head-end power, the mid-trains will shove the rear end of the train back to main two and head for Montclair where it will get onto the LA Subdivision and start its grand shove all the way to Mira Loma.

en: The Craig branch from Bond to Craig once was filled with coal unit trains. Today it sees regularly only the once a week Craig local. Albeit it should depart around 9am at Phippsburg, we've encountered it on our way to Phippsburg. Lucky as we are we've had enough time to urn around and get to this beautiful location near Steamboat Springs. C45ACCTE #7637 and C44ACM #7257 are the haulers on this day.
Rolling through the open desert of Southern New Mexico, UP 8614 rolls eastward at Omlee siding with an intermodal train. In standard PSR practice, there's a block of manifest and a block of autoracks tacked onto the rear of this train.
In the distance are the Sacramento Mountains, forming the eastern boundary of the Tularosa Basin that that the former Rock Island's Golden State Route runs through. The other side of the basin is marked by the San Andres Mountains, with White Sands National Park standing between. The park entrance is only about 15 miles away from the railroad here.

In June 2024 UP erected new Vader signals here, so these searchlights are unfortunately not long for this world.

The temperature hovers at 107 degrees in the depths of the Sacramento River Canyon at Delta. It's almost too hot to handle. The air is still, making the heat feel unbearable. But the approach of a train at the last minute, coupled with some beautiful light, makes it worth staying for a minute. Thankfully, the train approaching was a shorty. UP 5274 leads a short northbound maintenance of way train up the canyon. A quick retreat to an air conditioned car was in order after the train's passing.

Snow doesn't happen often in Houston, only once every 3-4 years on average. And even then, most snowfall is less than an inch. But January 2025 brought a unique snowstorm that dropped white powder across the Gulf Coast from Houston to the Florida panhandle.
Central Houston received about 4 inches of the white stuff in the morning, still stuck to the ground, locomotives, and railcars that afternoon as this Mexico-bound manifest leaves Houston behind.

Tucson, Arizona to El Paso, Texas tonnage starts to pull out of Tucson in the late afternoon with more than favorable light on not only the train but the Santa Catalina Mountains in the distance, due to in part by a dead North/South orientation the track for about a mile along side Alvernon Way. This made for a great spot to catch this eastbound in the late afternoon in the winter and also benefits westbounds in the summertime looking the other way if you'd like to look south granted the view isn't as good.

Union Pacific 7622 sits on the rear end of West Colton bound train out of Ogden, Utah as the heavy manifest waits for a re-crew and space to clear up in Yermo. The train encountered a broken rail near Basin and had to wait it out to proceed west, now the train will have to wait for eastbounds to shuffle out of Yermo before it can enter the yard and continue onward.

After finishing up at work today, I looked off to the east and saw some incredible storm lighting that was BEGGING to be photographed. Even better, there was a fresh UP repaint on a westbound that was parked at Grantville, but unfortunately, it was parked there due to a trio of eastbounds that were on their way, and it didn't run until after sunset.
However, I was able to photograph the second of these eastbounds in a completely different fashion than initially anticipated, nicely showing off its silhouette, and the beautiful Kansas sunset.

With the day off of work (agaaaaaaaaaaain, ugh.), temps hovering around zero, and windchills around 10 below, I decided to... head outside to work out at the gym.
Since I was out, and bundled up already, I figured that I might as well take the camera along as well and see what I could do near the tracks.
As I traversed to the east, I came across this westbound coming out of Grantville behind the UP 8049. This was kicking up a whole bunch of powder, and just west of here, it would meet the 6493 E.

With a year-old rebuild up front, an eastbound UP manifest splits buildings old and new in the part of Houston's 1st Ward that has been revitalized as "Sawyer Yards". To the left are older warehouses and the silos from a former rice elevator. To the right are a new apartment complex and the defunct Buffalo Bayou Brewing. Buff Brew had pretty good beer, good food, and a great view of the Houston skyline from its 3rd floor patio. Unfortunately its financial management wasn't so good; it went under in early 2024.
