CSX local L391, the Atkinson Turn, passes Hopkinsville Elevator as they take the lead into Casky Yard after a run to Madisonville and back. Leading today's turn is C40-8WM 7801, followed by an unfortunate ES40DC, and then a Paducah & Louisville SD70MAC. PAL 4516 was picked up in Atkinson, but I don't know where it's going.
After getting clouds at the last 2 spots, the sun comes out at Romney for CSX L391. L391 featured a C40-8WM, an ES40DC, and a PAL SD70MAC on this day.
CSX train Q560 (Cinncinati, OH - Selkirk, NY) has a rebuilt GE C40-8W leading as it works its way east through CP 382 during a morning snowstorm. CSX has recently reactivated 10 of these rebuilt dash 8s, which now sport the "C40-8WM" designation.
With the onset of the most recent batch of SD70MAC rebuilds, now diving into the 4700 series, CSX has made the decision to begin storing all of their active dash 8s and dash 9s, with the goal to supposedly have them all stored by the end of March. As probably the biggest fan of these engines, this news was extremely saddening to me. Not all was immediately lost, however, as one of the holdouts was running only an hour away from home. C40-8WM #7807 has been living on CSX's W&W Subdivision for roughly a month now, going back and forth on L231 and L233 from Pigford Yard in Warsaw to the respective destinations of Rocky Mount and Clinton/Rose Hill. Knowing that this could very well be the last chance I have to see an active CSX dash 8, I've gone out twice now to document its final stand in relative obscurity in eastern North Carolina. This was my winning shot of it, seen climbing up the hill out of Dudley on L231-13. 7807 is one of the more unique units, sporting high mounted ditchlights like an AC44, and also having an EMD style bell. The dash 8s have soldiered on into 2024, but this very well could be the last year we see them running. Only time will tell.
CSX F74909 works up the grade towards Acca Yard on the CSX Bellwood Sub with C40-8WM #7799 leading ES40DC #5500 Spirit of Cincinnati.
With a fresh crew on broad, S581 is spotting cars on the Southbound before continuing south toward Atlanta's Tilford Yard where the train will terminate. In the lead is a freshly rebuilt C40-8WM that has update electronics that make the engine more efficient and safer.
CSX train X135 races westbound through the interlocking at Lambert in Akron, Ohio on a very humid August morning. Up front is a rebuilt CSX GE C40-8W, now labeled as a C40-8WM (or CM40-8 in CSX nomenclature). Catching one of these DC traction units on the point of an intermodal train is a bit rare anymore. Even more rare is a CSX GE with low ditchlights.
Although the designation on the cab is CW40-8, no "M" in it, I highly suspect this may be one of the GE rebuilds, very fresh out of the factory at Erie. One reason, it's just too good a paint job, like everything was totally sandblasted, and it's got the added aftercooler on top of the radiator section, which it didn't have in pictures taken last summer in YN2 paint. Either way, it's pretty. Ocala March 4 2017 at 1149.
CSX local D753 rolls westbound through Ravenna, Ohio in the filtered evening sunlight of a warm June day. Up front is one of the 10 C40-8Ws that CSX has rebuilt, now labeled as a C40-8WM (or CM40-8 in CSX nomenclature).
CSX #7787, a GE C40-8WM, is trailing on train D753 as it rolls through downtown Kent, Ohio. I'm not one to do front-coupled roster shots, but seeing any form of Dash 8 on CSX in 2021 is a bit rare. This 7787 has been working the D752/D753 locals for a couple weeks now, and unfortunately tends to lead the D752 eastbound under the cover of darkness. This is one of the ten Dash 8s that CSX has modified into a C40-8WM. I'm not sure what all the rebuild entailed, but I do know the units basically had their entire cab interior overhauled. Glad to see some of these 1990s units still kicking in an era where modern GEVOs and AC power reign.
CSX 7807 (C40-8WM) trails third on CSX I143 leaving the facility at Fairburn, GA. In 2016/2017 CSX rebuilt 10 old C40-8W's to C40-8WM's, 7807 was the very last one rebuilt.
Three CSX C40-8WM rebuilds (#7799, #7807, #7774) lead what was once a common power set consisting of MEC #316, #512, and #503 - North Yarmouth, ME
CSX train M511 finds the final rays of light on a mild April evening as it turns from south (railroad east) on the C&O to west on the B&O in Fostoria, Ohio. Leading is a rebuilt GE C40-8WM locomotive.
