On September 7, 1999, a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight rolls through Grizzly, Montana, after crossing Marias Pass on the southern border of Glacier National Park. Burlington Northern GE C30-7 No. 5581 leads a Santa Fe C40-8W and two BN EMD SD40-2s power the eastbound train.
On the afternoon of May 28, 2000, Santa Fe GE C40-8W No. 846, along with a pair of Heritage II C44-9Ws, leads a westbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe manifest out of Rocky Colorado. The train is circling lesser-known “Little 10 Curve” and is being pushed with a pair of EMD SD40-2 manned helpers on the rear. In the foreground is Clay siding and the Moffat Tunnel Subdivision main line where the train will be in a few minutes.

The classic Pennsy signal bridge is long gone. A talking detector here announced this location as Mexico (which is across the Juniata River to the right), but the postal location is actually part of Port Royal.
Light snow is falling the day after Christmas in 1995, eight months after Union Pacific’s merger of Chicago & North Western at Butler Yard outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin. UP has already planted its flag (literally) with a coal train powered with UP C40-8Ws on the main line, but the old guard still musters a pair of EMD SD18Rs to switch the yard.
The fields are plowed and the crops are planted on this spring day of April 26, 1997, as a westbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight led by a pair of Santa Fe locomotives hustles through Leeds, Illinois.

With a pair of painted C40s bracketing a patched C40-8W, POAY is doing every bit of trackspeed as they cruise by the old B&M station at Wells, headlights dimmed for the meet with counterpart AYPO. Sadly Pan Am hasn't repainted any of the widecab C40s, and with CSX looking to purchase the railroad, it doesn't seem likely that any will be painted.
On a gloomy morning, CSX ethanol train B779 winds its way into Rochester, New York and crosses over I-490 and the Inner Loop on grade separated trackage. Powered by all an GE Dash Series locomotive consist, ex-LMX C40-8W 7929 leads the way with glowing red marker lights.

Let’s turn back the clock to 1993 when new Super Fleet locomotives were arriving from General Electric. “Sticky Fresh” C40-8W 893 was leading westbound containers through the great Mojave Desert region at Homer, California on April 9, 1993. Good times!
An empty Union Pacific petcoke train slowly rolls through downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota and heads across the Mississippi River on the Roberts Street Lift Bridge. The power for the train takes the form of three CSX C40-8W's, which have been recently brought out of storage and are on the UP to repay horsepower hours. The lift bridge, built in 1913, features a Pratt Through Truss vertical lift span that is approached by eight deck girder spans on the south end. UP is currently in the process of submitting applications and developing plans for the replacement of the structure.

Back when wide nose GEs were a novelty, fresh Conrail C40-8W's 6062 and 6060 roll south on the Monongahela Railway Waynesburg Southern Branch at MP W4 near Rogersville, PA with a train of Somerset Railroad SOM empty coal gondolas from the Somerset Power Plant in Somerset, New York destined for loading at Consol Coal's Blacksville #2 Mine at Wana, WV on October 27, 1990.

Never thought I'd be at the age where I'm looking at images I took in the 2010's, and remembering it wasn't "just" last year. Damn...
Anyway, from what I read up on, CSX has begun its march east on the Indianapolis Line east of Sidney, OH to replace the Conrail era Tri-lights. A notable location that will lose their signals are at Quincy, OH. I couldn't tell you how many weekends I spent visiting Quincy to just hang out and photograph trains passing these government railroad relics. It's a shame they're coming down, but such is progress.
In "better" times, a Q train lead by CSX 7356 departs Quincy as it crosses over on its westward journey.

A former ATSF C40-8W is now under CN ownership as it leads empty ethanol cans westbound through the historic downtown of Harpers Ferry, WV. The train is seen exiting the tunnel and is on the bridge crossing over the Potomac River.

A westbound Washington Eastern scoot, Washington state's term for a grain train ferrying wheat between smaller grain elevators and larger shuttle facilities, rolls west on Northern Pacific's former CW Branch near Reardan, Washington. Talk about a change of scenery.
Sunday was light engine move day on the River Line. Conrail ENS-102 heads north across Overpeck Creek with a typical consist of 15 light units. This move was a regular occurrence on Sunday afternoons at the time and was required due to an imbalance of traffic coming into the North Jersey terminal area.

Since the start of 2022 we have seen a resurgence of foreign leaders on CN in Southern Ontario. With this train I have got every Class 1 leading since January.

Well worn CSX Dash 8 7764 leads empty coal train E900 as it catches a patch of sunshine, passing by the C&O signals at the SE Ranger control point in Ranger, West Virginia. This interlocking includes a spring switch, as indicated by the "S" sign on the switch motor.

Well worn CSX Dash 8 7764 leads empty coal train E900 as it takes the diverging route through the EEDT control point, the east end of the double track at the start of the Logan Sub in Barboursville, West Virginia. A classic set of C&O signals govern the control point at this gateway into Appalachian coal country.
