While I generally prefer to get the shot without bystanders, I think the people in this shot help lend a sense of scale to the size of the Grand Canyon at this particular spot..

Feeding these serene creatures and listening to them munch on the grass is extremely therapeutic in this toxic world of warmongering and thieving politicians and the ‘ME! I WANT! What About Me!’

As I advance in years I think more about what I can do and practice as a lifestyle change to preserve this planet; not for us humans but for nature and wildlife the innocent bystanders in all of our monumental mess.

“The name Kinderdijk is Dutch for "Children dike". During the Saint Elizabeth flood of 1421, the Grote Hollandse Waard flooded, but the Alblasserwaard polder stayed unflooded. It is often said that when the horrendous storm had subsided, a villager went to the dike between these two areas to inspect what could be salvaged. In the distance he saw a wooden cradle floating on the water. As it came nearer, some movement was noted, and upon closer investigation, a cat was found, trying to keep it in balance by leaping back and forth in such a manner that water couldn't flood the cradle. As the cradle eventually came close enough to the dike for a bystander to pick up the cradle, he saw that a baby was quietly sleeping inside it, nice and dry. The cat had kept the cradle balanced and afloat. This folktale and legend has been published as "The Cat and the Cradle" in English.” I visited this beautiful area on a trip several years ago, and was fascinated by the windmills and this legend.

As a curious bystander, out for some street photography on a rainy and chilly October night, I captured this candid image in Times Square, New York City. Processed during "The Lockdown."

You can find this special work of art on the Markt, the square in front of the beautiful, Gothic town hall (Stadhuis) of the Dutch provincial town of Middelburg. To the delight of bystanders and passers-by, it is secretly a hidden fountain.

Whoever takes a seat on one of the chairs - invited to do so by two mysterious peepholes and the text "Look in the tunnel and you will see the city's sewage system from the 8th century" - unconsciously activates a mechanism that starts to spray water. The plinth in the center of the artwork contains a beautiful bronze scene on top, which indicates what the square and the town hall look like from above.

Demonstration on Plaza Mayor in central Madrid. We just happened to be there as innocent bystanders. Lots of people seemed to be unhappy about something, but the whole event was very civil and organized. My Spanish friends will undoubtedly recognize the flags. My knowledge about the event is scanty enough so that I will not try to say more for fear of misrepresenting facts.

The puppy sometimes suffers from fits of frantic fun and rushes around the house like crazy. On the way, he picks up everything that comes across with his teeth. At such moments, Vaska hides on the windowsill (where Yashka cannot reach) and watches him from afar.

April is National Poetry Month, a celebration of poets and poetry that's been in place for 25 years.

Last month, as the U.S. grieved over attacks against Asian Americans, NPR's Morning Edition collected poems on how people grapple with the increased violence and discrimination.

Over 500 listeners shared powerful, poignant poems — in the form of a list beginning with the word "today." They showcased fear, anger, empathy and motivation to make the world a better place.

NPR's resident poet Kwame Alexander took lines from the submissions to create a community poem, "Today, I Am A Witness To Change."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To quote just a few:
Today I hesitate
for the first time, I wonder if I should stay home and not walk the neighborhood.
it's not the weather or the virus — the day is beautiful
Today
I'm frozen
Terrified.
I cannot hide
This skin
This hair
These eyes.
I see the punch, punch, punch of a community at war.
Today I am a witness.
I rush past the jeering white boys that say I brought corona to America.
My soul is wary.
Today, a video call full of empty boxes
Stares at me, apprehensively.
Students locked behind a screen
Their hearts and minds
Severed
From one another.
Today, the headlines say March Madness
Today, I don't watch basketball.
The madness is in the streets.
In broad daylight.
On the concrete sidewalks of New York.
In the silence of bystanders.
It's in the textbooks. The classrooms. The family dinners. The lies we tell.
Today the rain falls
and falls
and falls
and falls.
a silent tear from a weeping woman.
Today, I will say their names
I will cancel class and try again tomorrow.
That's a scary thought to commute to NYC nowadays for me, even I'm FULLY inoculated. :-(((
The Kiama Blowhole, the largest in the world, is a blowhole in the town of Kiama, New South Wales, Australia. The name ‘Kiama’ has long been translated as “where the sea makes a noise”. It is one of the town's major tourist attraction. Under certain sea conditions, the blowhole can spray 50 litres of water up to 25 metres in the air, in quantities that thoroughly drench any bystanders. There is a second, less famous blowhole in Kiama, commonly referred to as the Little Blowhole by locals. It is much smaller than the other (called the Big Blowhole), but due to its narrow shape, it is more reliable than the Big Blowhole, and in the right conditions can be equally spectacular. The blowhole attracts 900,000 tourists a year. Kiama Blowhole is just a few metres beyond the coastline. The little blowhole is located at the Little Blowhole Reserve, Tingira Crescent, Kiama, 2km south of the main blowhole. The blowhole was formed from basalt lava flows approximately 260 million years ago and was first discovered by local Aboriginals who named it 'Khanterinte'. The blowhole was first written about by George Bass on 6 December 1797. Bass had captained a crew of six and set out on an open whaleboat to explore the south coast of Australia. He noticed the blowhole after anchoring his boat in a sheltered bay. Water shoots out of the blowhole because of pressure that forms in an underground chamber. As water fills the chamber at the end of the tunnel, pressure builds. When waves subside, the pressure inside the chamber pushes water up through the blow hole. Ra_1
Within the USRC lies many searchlights, but many are extremely hard to photograph due to the heavy development and fencing around the corridor, this one is visible with a bit of struggle, as long as you don't mind the bystanders from below watching you cling to a fence. To my knowledge this structure is also extremely old.
In sympathy and solidarity for the awful carnage of yesterday in your beautiful city. I am so sorry and I stand with you during this time of unbelief and pain!
Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! xo💜💜
Long Road
Eddie Vedder and Neil Young
And I wished for so long... cannot stay.
All the precious moments... cannot stay.
It's not like wings have fallen... cannot stay.
But still something's missing... cannot say.
Holding hands of daughters and sons,
And their faiths are falling down, down, down, down...
I have wished for so long...
How I wish for you today.
Will I walk the long road? Cannot stay...
There's no need to say goodbye...(say goodbye)
All the friends and family.
All the memories going round, round, round, round...
I have wished for so long.
How I wish for you today.
And the wind keeps rollin',
And the sky keeps turning gray.
And the sun is set...
The sun will rise another day.
I have wished for so long...
How I wish for you today.
I have wished for so long...
How I wish for you today.
Will I walk the long road?
We all walk the long road...
Where the gigantic dunes of the Namib desert reach the Atlantic shore and cold Antarctic Benguela current, a daily battle playouts out between fog and sun, and a millenium battle between dunes and sea. Mankind is a puny bystander to this battle-the Skeleton Coast is littered with more shipwrecks than anywhere else on the planet. Shawnee Shipwreck 1976.
I love simplicity, but thoughts are complicated, sometimes you need a complicated image to invoke your thoughts at that moment. The story behind this image is to reflect what an artist sees through another artist's work.
It is very hard not to capture other bystanders in a public display. I took many shots with my tripod and use Photoshop Stack to remove all the other point and shooters but this photographer. He just stood there for a long time and appeared on most of my frames. So I put him back on this image to reflect his admiration at that frozen moment.
Instead of posting another impressive bull, I'm ending my mini-series of elk rut images with this young elk calf.
For first year calves, the rut must be a bit frightening. I refer to them as innocent bystanders. But, as Bill Bowman points out, they are the point of the rut and the future of the species.
The first chirps of the waking day birds mark the "point vierge" of the dawn under a sky as yet without real light, amoment of awe and inexpress- ible innocence, when the Father in perfect silence opens their eyes. They begin to speak to Him, not with fluent song, but with an awakening question that is their dawn state, their state at the "point vierge." Their condition asks if it is time for them to " be." He answers "yes." Then, they one by one wake up, and become birds.
Handheld night panorama.
Just happened on this by chance and took a series of panoramas from different vantage points around the Plaza. This was by far the best, just wish I had a tripod with me at the time and another 20m or so.
If you look hard enough you might see my son hiding in the image somewhere with his black backpack on. By some miracle, I managed to avoid any of the other bystanders in the final composition.
