Indian Gold Buyers Cautious Despite Slight Price Fall by Goldmania

NEW DELHI – Demand for gold in India remained subdued Wednesday as jewelry buyers stayed away, despite a slight pullback in prices from record highs, but there was some cautious investment buying in coins and bullion bars.

The price of pure spot gold in Mumbai fell to 25,740 rupees ($571.87) per 10 grams Wednesday after hitting a record high of 25,925 rupees Tuesday, while the October MCX gold futures contract is down 0.4% at 25,630 rupees per 10 grams on a strong Indian rupee to the U.S. dollar and firm equities.

Overseas spot gold was trading at $1,747.05/oz, down from a record $1,779.70/oz Tuesday.

"The demand is slightly slow. People are waiting for the price to stabilize," said Princeson Jose, managing director at Chennai-based Prince Jewellery.

Traders said demand for gold jewelry has almost entirely disappeared and they are not expecting it to improve before the September-November peak festival season, which is considered an auspicious time for gold purchases.

"There was some buying by merchants and investors late-evening Tuesday when prices declined to 25,400 rupees/10 grams from 26,100 rupees/10 grams," said Pawan Chokshi, an Ahmedabad-based bullion dealer. "There is no aggressive buying. That will come only when international prices fall by $100/oz."

Gnanasekar Thiagarajan, director at Commtrendz Research, said there could be some short-term pressure on gold prices as confidence is emerging again in the equities market.

However, traders said the overall sentiment on gold remains bullish and people are betting that international prices could cross $2,000/oz by October-end or November.

"Gold is looking good, even at these levels," said Krishna Kumar Nathani, managing director of Indiabullion.com.

"The Federal Reserve's comment [Tuesday] that low interest rates will remain at least until 2013 is also good for gold. That means there will be liquidity in the markets, which could drive up inflation and gold is the safest hedge against it," he said.

Rajiv Popley, director of Mumbai-based jewelry chain Popley & Sons, said Indian consumers are getting used to high gold prices and they hope jewelry buying will again emerge in the festival season.

Gold's glitter remains, despite the price rise by Goldmania

Gold breached the Rs 2,400-per gram last week but that hasn't fazed either the buyers or the jewellery trade. No jewellery buyer left the store empty handed and no jeweller had a worried brow. In fact, the cream of the business was celebrating the beauty and potential of the precious jewellery at the India International Jewellery Week (IIJW) and its corresponding India International Jewellery Show (IIJS), held in Mumbai.

Amidst the sizzling ramp walks that got 32 of India's best design houses to display their finest pieces and the jewellery trade event that saw over 30,000 visitors streaming in, the message was loud and clear – ideate to keep buyers interested.

The industry seems to have found a way to work around the soaring prices of precious metals and stones. Mr Rajiv Jain, Chairman of Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and the organiser of the jewellery extravaganza, said in an exclusive interview that the aim now is to promote India as a design destination and not just a jewellery manufacturing hub.

New design and creativity seems to be the answer for many prominent jewellers who look at it as a neat solution to counter the price rise.

Mr Sanjay Kothari, Vice-Chairman of the GJEPC, explains that every customer has a certain budget in mind when they go to buy jewellery.

Despite the rise in prices, the budget still remains the same; the way the jewellery is designed is what has changed to give buyers more for less.

More in terms of it being large and chunky, like many buyers like it, and less in terms of the weight of gold, to save money. The beauty just gets a little twist.

Some popular styles that have gained fans because of the increasing prices are lightweight jewellery like that is usually worn in the West, Italian designs, silver jewellery and open settings that uses less gold.

Mr Vinod Hayagriv, MD of C. Krishniah Chetty and Sons, says that his design house offers options such as Rate Protection Plan that allows consumers to get rate savings and designs that are tailored to save weight, retaining durability and wearability.

Though there are still many takers for traditional heavy jewellery, and the event saw many Indian brands showcase some large glittering gold and diamond pieces, one also noticed the trend of using rubies, emeralds and other semi-precious stones as replacements to add to the glitter.

While the trade show saw jewellers from all over the world, the event was a fashion extravaganza with prominent jewellers from India like Tanishq, C. Krishniah Chetty and Sons, Anmol Jewellers, Amrapali, Gitanjali Group and others.

The jewellery industry witnessed a growth of 42 per cent last year and has already raked in 16 per cent in this year's first quarter.

The industry seems to have found the fashionable, social and creative way of retaining the shine despite the price rise.

In recent months, investors have flocked to gold, helping to drive up its price to record highs.

Some market watchers have attributed the gold rally merely to investors seeking a short-term inflation hedge or a perceived “safe-haven” investment in the face of a slowing global economy, ongoing global sovereign debt problems and Friday’s downgrade of US debt. Gold prices, however, have been on the rise for a decade and I believe there are a few key reasons why.

First, high gold prices can’t be blamed on fears of near-term inflation. While investors have historically paid a higher premium for gold when inflation expectations are high, inflation expectations have receded since a spring spike. In addition, the last decade has been characterized by low inflation in most developed countries.

But the rally in gold can be partly explained by longer-term inflation fears tied to deficit-related spending that would increase the money supply. When deficits are high, investors rationally worry about whether the government will ultimately deal with large deficits by creating a surge in the money supply. Today, this appears to be a growing concern among investors and as the US fiscal situation remains precarious, this may support gold prices, even in the absence of any near-term signs of inflationary pressures

Rising gold prices are also explained by another sort of inflation — inflation as the erosion of the purchasing power of the dollar. Historically, the deterioration of the dollar has been a more important determinant of the performance of gold than traditional inflation. Gold tends to do best when the dollar’s value is eroding and we have seen a significant pullback in the value of the dollar versus other currencies over the past 2 ½ years.

Part of the relationship between gold and the dollar is mechanical. As gold is valued in dollars, a declining dollar by definition will lead to higher gold prices. However, the relationship between gold and the dollar also reflects a second dynamic. In those periods when investors are uncomfortable with any fiat currency, including the dollar, gold is the natural beneficiary — and increasingly these days, so is the Swiss Franc.

Now onto the final reason behind gold’s rise. One of the key drivers of gold and other commodities is the level of real interest rates, which are the nominal rates minus the inflation rate (or more accurately, inflation expectations). Over the last decade, we’ve been in an environment where real rates have been at historically low levels. Low real rates mean the opportunity cost of owning gold is low.

In other words, when real rates are high, you can get a return from owning paper assets like stocks and bonds. And there’s an opportunity cost to holding a commodity like gold that produces no income. When rates are low, however, that opportunity cost is very low, another explanation for why commodities are doing well in today’s environment.

So ironically, if we continue to be in an environment where the Fed helps keep real interest rates low, we’re likely to see an environment that continues to be supportive of gold and other commodities.

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Comex gold futures floated just shy of $1,800 as investors dug in for another volatile day in equity markets.

The most actively traded contract, for December delivery, was recently up $26, or 1.5%, at $1,769 a troy ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The thinly traded August-delivery contract was up $31.30, or 1.8%, at $1,771.30 a troy ounce.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index futures were trading nearly 2% down ahead of market open, pointing to a lack of optimism among investors.

"Gold is going to hold its underlying value, especially with stocks starting to slide back off," said Frank McGhee, head precious metals dealer at Integrated Brokerage Services in Chicago.

Gold's role as a haven from uncertainty and volatility has catapulted its price to record highs. Investors have been flooding the gold market in recent weeks on escalating concerns about the U.S. economy and fears about Europe's sovereign debt crisis spreading to larger euro zone economies.

"We remain nervous; that alone supports the gold market," said Frank Lesh, broker and futures analyst with FuturePath Trading.

Gold prices got an added boost from the Federal Reserve, which said it would keep interest rates near zero until mid-2013. The monetary policy announcement, which came after gold floor trading closed Tuesday, also downgraded the Fed's outlook on U.S. economic growth.

Investors in search of a haven often chose between Treasury bonds, which earn interest, and gold, which does not. A low interest rate environment puts gold on an even footing with Treasurys.

"Capital flows look for returns and safety, and right now interest-bearing products don't give you much," Lesh said.
