Peaceful Saturday
After our 4 day heatwave when temperatures reached 40C, we have had a wet, cool day today - only 23C. I much prefer the cooler weather and the gardens are loving the rain.
I was going through my photos from our trip to the UK in 2009 and came across this photo of a Glasswing Butterfly that I took in the Butterfly House in Stratford upon Avon. I am really missing travel and don't know when we will be able to again. Probably not this year either.
Beautiful and graceful, varied and enchanting, small but approachable, butterflies lead you to the sunny side of life. And everyone deserves a little sunshine.

If butterflies are your thing, you'll enjoy today's get away to the Butterfly House near Coffs Harbour on the north coast of New South Wales. Here in a tropical rain forest setting we can roam among 400 different species of Australian butterflies. Bring your camera because the photo opps are endless, there are staff on hand to answer all your questions. It may sound trite, but I never tire of butterflies sitting on me and other people taking photos of the encounter.
One last thing, the butterfly in this shot is an Orange Lacewing (Cethosia penthesilea), it's a species of heliconiine butterfly found in south-east Asia, Indonesia, and Australia.

this little butterfly was a bit tired from fluttering around so long... so he took a ride on David's shoulder!
Sunday in the Butterfly House @ Callaway Gardens, Middle Georgia. Are these native where you are?? what are the red blossoms?

First damselflies of the year 3-6-22: Fragile forktails - several, one mystery reddish forktail
Orange Lacewing (Cethosia penthesilea)
Back to the Butterfly House at Melbourne Zoo in December 2017.
Our first big outing of the year was to Callaway Gardens this past week - where we saw foty damselflies & dragonflies (Green darners!), and several wild butterfly species (Tiger swallowtails, Black swallowtail, a probable Falcate orangetip). Lots of species flying in the butterfly house - including this big green Malachite which is native to South Florida & the Keys.
Spring is running about 3 weeks early here north of ATL - with a record 81o in February - while Southern California has had torrential rain and snow (a good thing the guys tell me - so hope Lake Mead is filling up!), and lots of snow up North. Birds are nesting here - and our Ruby-throated hummingbirds could arrive anytime!
On Valentine's Day, David and I went to the LI Riverhead Aquarium... what a fantastic day to spend indoors and outside.... this aquarium is top notch!!
Being in the butterfly house is like being in a Disney movie... they flutter all around you... all different varieties... this is the Rice Paper Butterfly...
I couldn't stop myself from clicking, so putting them in collages is the easiest way to share their beauty!!
Sadly, living indoors, they only live about 1-2 weeks... you can see many are frayed and almost at the end of their life...
Idea leuconoe, also known as the paper kite butterfly, rice paper butterfly, large tree nymph,[1] or in Australia the white nymph butterfly,[2] is a butterfly known especially for its presence in butterfly houses and live butterfly expositions. It has a wingspan of 12 to 14 cm. The paper kite is of Southeast Asian origin, but can also be found in Northern Australia and Southern Taiwan.
At the Florida Natural History Museum on the grounds of the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL.
I am not sure of the name of this butterfly but I sure like its markings.
Happy Wing Wednesday!

I think this might be a Blue Tiger butterfly but am not 100% sure, so if anyone can confirm I'd appreciate it. Photographed in the Butterfly House at Melbourne Zoo.

We visited the Bribie Island Butterfly House end of July 2023 and were treated to a lot of them around.
The male of that species are particularly breathtaking in their colour patterns and size.
A postman butterfly, either the common postman (Heliconius melpomene), or a red postman (Heliconius erato), in Stratford Butterfly Farm, Warwickshire.
Both H. melpomene and H erato hail from the new world, with ranges extending from Mexico through to Southern America, and are relatively abundant. Their wingspans are typically around 3.5-4 cm.
