Catching these butterflies in flight is more fun then catching super boats going well over 150 mph. Part of the reason is that they usually trying to hide in darker areas and i have a feeling that these butteries move even faster than super boats. this is a hand held exposure at ISO 3200 & 400mm. Straight from camera, no photo shop except minor crop.

Today we went to the Door Village Harvest Festival in LaPorte, Indiana. The main event was the Native American Tribal Ceremony. The natives featured were from the Pottawatomie Indian Tribe and Miami Tribe Councils. These Indians were prominent in my section of Indiana and were forced to march the Trail of Death, which runs close to my home. This little blonde girl is part of the council. Everything in our Northwest Indiana area is named for these people. This little girl is performing the Buttlerfly Dance where the girls go from little ones to grown women.
I am sorry I haven't been on Flickr for over a week. I have been ill but am starting to feel a bit better. Hugs to you all.
The Fancy Shawl or Butterfly Dance----the women dance primarily,on their toes,
kicking high and twirling in the air, with their beautiful shawls outstretched like the wings of a butterfly.

"Just like the butterfly....
everyone deserves a little sunshine.."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
...Just like the butterfly,
I too will awaken in my own time...
Beautiful and graceful, varied and enchanting,
small but approachable, butterflies lead you
to the sunny side of life.
And everyone deserves a little sunshine.
Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued,
is always just beyond your grasp, but which,
if you will sit down quietly,
may alight upon you.
May the wings of the butterfly kiss the sun.
And find your shoulder to light on.
To bring you luck, happiness and riches.
Today, tomorrow and beyond.
A butterfly lives only a few days,
but still it flies joyfully
capturing many hearts.
So, each moment in life is precious,
be happy keep wining hearts...

A colorful butterfly dancer (AKA Ladies Fancy Shawl Dance) at the Stone Mountain Indian Pow-Wow. Stone Mountain, Georgia.
As I watched this beautiful dance performance, I couldn't help but wonder where and how this dance originated. I was captivated, inspired, and awed. I determined a slow shutter speed and some careful panning would be the only way I could capture the moment. Whew! That was tricky! I got one shot out of about thirty that came out nice enough to post to flickr.
After a quick google search I found the Cherokee version of this legendary and beautiful dance.
"Many, many years ago when the Earth was still quite new, there was a beautiful butterfly who lost her mate in battle. To show her grief, she took off her beautiful wings and wrapped herself in a drab cocoon. In her sadness, she could not eat and she could not sleep and her relatives kept coming to her lodge to see if she was okay.
Of course she wasn't, but she didn't want to be a burden on her people so she packed up her wings and her medicine bundle and took off on a long journey. She wandered about for many days and months, until finally she had gone all around the world. (To this day, butterflies go on long journeys, but that is another story.)
On her journey she kept her eyes downcast and stepped on each stone she came to as she crossed fields and creeks and streams. Finally, one day as she was looking down, she happened to notice the stone beneath her feet, and it was so beautiful that it healed her sorrow.
She then cast aside her cocoon, shook the dust from her wings, and donned them once more. She was so happy she began to dance to give thanks for another chance to begin her life anew. Then she went home and told The People about her long journey and how it had healed her.
To this day,The People dance this dance as an expression of renewal, and to give thanks for new seasons, new life, and new beginnings.
The shawl in the Fancy Shawl Dance represents the butterfly's wings, the fancy steps and twirls represent the butterfly's style of flight. This is another reason you will sometimes hear the Fancy Shawl Competition Dance referred to as " the butterfly dance"."

You were meant to spread your wings.
Rise high, rise high in your heart and your mind, you were meant for greater things.

I'm sure we've all been
a wittness by chance..
To a butterfly doing
a Butterfly dance..
from flower to flower
they zip and they zoom
Tasting each flower
landing on every bloom..
they seem to be moving
to the sound of the wind
Dancing out summer
and dancing fall in ..

Although I do not think this is the best of pictures, there's something about the movement in this picture that I really like.
