Transition Progress at this point: 1 year on estrogen HRT (since 8/2017) [injections (and no spiro) since 1/2018: 44 injections in 7mos], progesterone since 3/25/2018 (4mos). !!!!!!!!! Facial Feminization Surgery booked and paid for at 2Pass Clinic (Belgium, with a quick visit to Paris before & after, 9/4/2018, 6.5hrs, $~28K--just 27 days to go!) !!!!!!!!!!!!! DHEA (dose just halved to 10mg/4d) to raise testosterone a bit (since 4/2018--4mos). 10X Biotin for fingernails (since 1/17--6mos). Full-time female since 9/2017 (11mos). Publicly out as trans since 10/11/2017 (10mos). Legally female since 12/21 (7mos). Completed 2 semesters (16 sessions) of transgender group speech therapy at GWU's Speech & Hearing Center (6mos of voice training since 2/2017). Weight down to 146lbs (51 down from 197, but still 9 up from low of 135). Same-weight waist measurement has dropped from 32" (12/17) to 31" (6/18) [now 35-31-35]. Boobs (Tanner IV) filling a 34A bra, but unsure of real cup size. Hair removal: 53 electrolysis sessions [since 4/2017] totaling 35.9 hours; 34 laser hair removal sessions [since 9/2016] (55 area treatments: 17/16/14/13 mouth/goatee/face/neck, 9 armpits, 7 legs/chest/ears/brazilian); and bi-weekly at-home IPL on arms since 6/17 (over a year). Have seen endo/primary therapist 7X [bloodwork 6X], and 4 other therapists 13X--On anticonvulsant mood stabilizer Lamictal (3.5mos since 4/15, 200mg/day). Latisse for eyelash lengthening since 4/17 (1yr4mos). 2 dental implants, Zoom teeth whitening, pierced ears, star cold-brand on ass (7/14/2018), hair dyed blue [but blue has mostly faded, with the remaining becoming purple]. No haircuts since 1/2015--3.5yrs. Sephora makeup class attended. Minor body contouring procedures purchased on groupon (8 laser lipo + 4 ultrasonic liposculpture + 3 non-invasive buttlift sessions + permanent lip coloring), but being booked after FFS. Wardrobe replacement up to 1,129 items. Total transition expenditures at this point are now over $53,000.

We hung out with a patient who was only there for a couple of days for an electrolysis appointment.

Day 5. Finally moved a teeny bit of air through my left nostril finally. Then I got a tummy ache from the diclophinac and paracetamol-codeine....so they gave me domperidone and it turns out to be the first thing I've ever had an allergic reaction to. I broke out in hives and was quite worried. There were no pharmacies open, 2Pass kind of disappointed me by having nothing on hand at the facility, and the only option was to go to the hospital. Which would be cheap in Belgium, but we still declined.

He had a lot of before and after pictures for Claire to look at, and a 6-day stay in their clinic to include food and board was included in the price. It was a really nice facility, and Carolyn was glad that Claire had chosen 2Pass over PriyaMed in India, after seeing CT scans confirming friends had paid for procedures that were never even done (PriyaMed suuuuucks!). Dr. Bart and the entire 2Pass staff, including the resident who lived at the clinic and took care of all the patients, Petra, were very nice and friendly. We absolutely have complaints about the experience -- the implants that made my mouth look worse for months, only to threaten my life, creating two more additional surgeries for me to undergo and recover from. The nerve damage on my chin, which I think could have been avoided if Dr. Bart didn't insist that CT scans are unnecessary while any upscale FFS place does CT scans. The complication under my eye which literally exploded out of my face, but only 14 months later. Letting me leave without my chin strap. Sending me home when I wasn't really fit to fly yet. Having a big wooden table with an irregular shape that people trip over, which is very easy when your eyes are sewn shut. Not shaving as much off my forehead quite as I'd hoped (but still an amazing forehead job!). Not doing as much jaw work as I'd hoped (and that nerve damage). Not including a neck lift in my package when it absolutely should have been (it's so saggy now & it has been indicated as something I should do by another FFS surgeon). The surgery was good -- I've had people tell me in private that my FFS is the best FFS they've ever seen (wow) -- but it wasn't A+ for us. It was more like a A- or B+ for results, B+ for price, C for choosing the right procedures to perform on me, and a C- for complications endured. We felt like there was a lot of room for improvement in our experience as well. Like they don't say what time of day to arrive, and only let you check into your room a few hours before your appointment. So we ended up being several hours late because of this -- they could simply let people in 6-8 hrs before their appointment, then we would have been able to aim earlier and not be late. But at the same time...no regrets. This surgery was the best thing to ever happen to me. I'm very happy with what 2Pass did for me. I just wish things had gone better, and I'm going to ask for a revision to fix some of the problems.

Claire's come a long way in 4 years! Especially since it's only been 1 year on hormones (and 1 year of laser hair removal before that). So anyway, this is what 4 years worth of hair growth looks like.

(What's with the weird stuff at the lower left? The left picture was shorter, so Claire filled it in with the carpet from the right picture.)

Not shaving as much off my forehead quite as I'd hoped (but still an amazing forehead job!). Not doing as much jaw workas I'd hoped (and that nerve damage). I'm very happy with what2Pass did for me. I just wish things had gone better, and I'm going to ask for a revision to fix some of the problems.

Day 4. I hate how I feel a tiredness and slight shortness of breath ALL THE TIME. I'd settle for being able to control the flow of drool from my mouth to the floor and/or my panties. Would also be nice to have feeling in my forehead (which actually had some air in it that I squeezed out by accident, then it itched a lot for a min or 2) or in my lower lip. Molly Jane Powers said it will be around for months. All my lower teeth feel like after I had my radial cyst removals when the nerves reattach...I remember constantly rubbing my teeth with paper towels in order to make them feel SOMETHING. Nerve attacks, basically. Well this feels like that. But everywhere. Used a straw without holding my lips together with a hand! Woo!

Claire gets to take her own bath now, with assistance from Carolyn. This surgery doesn't lend itself to giving one the energy to bathe every day, but it's required for two weeks. The burden Claire must bear for her transition, lol.

Soon after we arrived at the clinic, Dr. Bart was called back in to do the pre-op appointment that was supposed to have happened hours earlier, but didn't because the train schedule made us so late. He took some "before" pictures and went over the plan for the procedure in more detail. Claire thinks she might have had better results if it wasn't so rushed.

This was when it really really set in. I've slept maybe 3 hours out of the last 24, and am dead tired. When I go to sleep, I will be woken up at 7AM and carted directly into a 6-hour surgery. That's scary as fuck. I might wake up once for 30 minutes, and never wake again. I took a dramatic 10 minute video talking about everything, during which I had to hold back tears. Hell, I have to hold back tears just writing about it now. My voice is cringey because I didn't hit a major speech therapy breakthrough until 2 months after the surgery, but I'm with my soul mate, and could die happy today.

Scared as f*ck, though. The video I took can be found at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrI95m9yfoc

So we ended up being several hours late because of this -- they could simply let people in 6-8 hrs before their appointment, then we would have been able to aim earlier andnot be late. But at the same time...no regrets. This surgery was the best thing to ever happen to me. I'm very happy with what 2Pass did for me. I just wish things had gone better.

Claire organized a Mini-Family Reunion as a way to answer any questions about her transition to any family members who might show up. Also as a last chance to see her face before her FFS (facial feminization surgery) in 30 days. 13 people came: Claire & Carolyn & Beth, Claire's Mom & Dad, Britt & Chris, Anne & Vicky, Jay & Amy, and Marcia & Nathan. The event was fun, though there was no real Q&A session on transgender stuff as originally intended. Claire was really hoping that some relatives that hadn't seen her since her transition would show up, but it was so fun to get everybody together!

Transition Progress at this point: 1 year on estrogen HRT (since 8/2017) [injections (and no spiro) since 1/2018: 42 injections in 7mos], progesterone since 3/25/2018 (4mos). DHEA (10mg/2d) to raise testosterone a bit (since 4/2018--4mos). 10X Biotin for fingernails (since 1/17--6mos). Full-time female since 9/2017 (11mos). Publicly out as trans since 10/11/2017 (10mos). Legally female since 12/21 (7mos). !!!!!!!!! Facial Feminization Surgery booked and paid for at 2Pass Clinic (Belgium, with a quick visit to Paris before & after, 9/4/2018, 6.5hrs, $26.8K--1 month to go!) !!!!!!!!!!!!! Completed 2 semesters (16 sessions) of transgender group speech therapy at GWU's Speech & Hearing Center (6mos of voice training since 2/2017). Weight down to 147lbs (50 down from 197, but 12 up from 135, uh oh!). Total transition expenditures at this point are now over $52,300.

Woo!

Claire got her Facial Feminization Surgery with Dr. Bart Van De Ven at the 2Pass Clinic in Antwerp, Belgium on September 4th, 2018.

Having a big wooden table with an irregular shape that people trip over, which is veryeasy when your eyes are sewn shut. I just wish things had gone better.

I just wish things had gone better.

There's no congestion you've ever had in your life that holds a candle to post-nose-job backup. You can't even fucking swallow right. The chin strap hurts like hell and is like you were punched in the jaw and now are pushing onto the sore bruise as hard as you can.. at all times.

Despite all the circumstances, Claire is in high spirits for someone who just out of a 6 hour surgery!

So we ended up being several hours late because of this -- they could simply let people in 6-8 hrs before their appointment, then we would have been able to aim earlier and not be late. But at the same time...no regrets. This surgery was the best thing to ever happen to me. I'm very happy with what 2Pass did for me. I just wish things had gone better.

Claire melodramatically chose her potentially last-ever American meal -- one of the awesome poke bowls from Pokeworks at The Block in Annandale. (Reminder that "American" equals colonialism, and we stole poke bowls via conquering Hawaii.)

So Claire managed to eat a Hawaiian food sold in Washington D.C. at an airport in Paris, "half" a world away from where it came from. They better give me some free poke bowls for this!!

Claire got her Facial Feminization Surgery with Dr. Bart Van De Ven at the 2Pass Clinic in Antwerp, Belgium on September 4th, 2018. Not shaving as much off my forehead as I'd hoped. Not doing as much jaw work as I'd hoped. Not including a neck lift in my package when it absolutely should have been. The surgery was good -- I've had people tell me in private that my FFS is the best FFS they've ever seen (which I disagree with!) -- but it wasn't A+ for us. It was more like a B+ for results, and a C- for complications and choosing the right procedures to perform on me.

She lived!

Claire was having a lot of gallbladder attacks throughout the year: TEN in FIVE MONTHS. They were really bad. One time, she was writhing in pain for 8 hours. She had to get her gallbladder removed before she went overseas to Belgium for her FFS (facial feminization surgery). Just a good idea. She was able to go to super-spicy food within a week!

A beautiful girl named Jellybean told us about the natural mirror art installation. There were several mirrors set up in a special configuration, so that when you looked in the mirror, instead of seeing a mirror image of yourself, you see the non-reversed image: how other people would see you. What you ACTUALY look like. It actually freaks everyone out. For whatever biological/psychological reason, the asymmetries that everyone has with their faces are much more apparent when we do not see a mirror image. We're not used to seeing our faces as they really exist in a mirror -- most people have never experienced it in their lives. It is freaky. The difference is more than anyone expects. This was a great art installation.
