Yes the building is from 1946 and is famous as "the first International Style building in Wilkes-Barre" haha.

La Lomita (the hillock) was first built in 1865 by Rene Guyard, a French merchant of Reynosa, who had purchased the land in 1845. Guyard left this site and porciones 55 and 57 to the Oblate priests in 1871. La Lomita became an important site for the Calvary of Christ, the Oblate missionaries who rode up and down the Rio Grande Valley visiting widely separated Catholic churches, baptizing newborns, performing marriage ceremonies and blessing the dead.

Church records indicate that La Lomita was rebuilt in 1899 with stones carved from the hill it was built on by the Rev. Fr. F. Bugnard, O.M.I., the Rev. Fr. R. Pescheur and two Oblate brothers. Other buildings, including a rectory and livery stable, were added at this time to the La Lomita area. Records indicate that La Lomita has been replaced at least twice, first in 1899 and again in the 1920s, and repaired in 1937 by neighboring Catholic women. When the City of Mission, Texas was founded in 1908, the city was named “Mission” in honor of La Lomita Chapel. Now, La Lomita Chapel is a religious shrine and a favorite site of historians that provides a glimpse into an important part of the history of Mission and South Texas in general.

Based on my online research I estimate that the store closed sometime in 2018 or 2019.

When I was younger, if a supermarket in the U.S. closed there'd be a news report about the closure in the local newspaper, but that does not appear to have happened when this Save-a-Lot closed.

Via the Lucas County Auditor's website I found a picture of the store from July 26th, 1998, which you might like to see.

Re the huge number of bollards, at first I thought their installation might have been prompted by a particularly high concern that an enraged person might try to crash their car into the building, but then I realized that they were intended to prevent people from rolling their shopping buggies away from the store.

Why doesn't the sign mentioned canned goods?

Of the four product categories listed, I am most interested in "dairy" and "frozen." I like frozen entrees so much, why, I have thought maybe sometime I ought to buy one of those huge casket-style freezers for my home.

It's from 1955 and was originally a sign for a car dealership, Jack's Used Cars. Here, look at old pictures of it. The elephant used to be pink, and there were lights on the underside of its carousel.

According to Google Streetview, it was painted light gray sometime after October 2020.

Yea verily the building is from 1975 and was a Dairy Queen.

The name of the laundry centre is "Laundry Centre." I have learned from Google Streetview that it used to be called "Greenery Laundry Centre," and that the word "Greenery" was removed (and the roof color was changed from green to pink) sometime between August 2009 and June 2011.

Donna spotted this one. I had to have a photo of it, so I drove about a mile to get back on the street and get the shot. Methinks this is pretty hilarious!

"Draper's Block," the building is called. Apparently the gabled parapet at the top is not original to the building!! And the third floor was designed to be a Masonic temple!! Scary!
