China's economy continues to grow fast and strong. However, it is also an embryonic economy that has many product, technology and service “gaps” that need to be filled. As China continues to develop, a continual stream of new gaps will emerge and create opportunities to start exciting, new companies and joint ventures. Hence, more Chinese businesspersons and companies are investing abroad to search for the right Western partners to fill those gaps. Up until now, most of the businesses involved have been going to China for low cost manufacturing support and services, but mainly for export. However, with the increasing costs in China and competition from other countries, the advantage of low cost manufacturing will gradually lessen. I think that the next stage of development, which is potentially more interesting to you and European businesses in general, is in the area of services and businesses related to the emerging internal Chinese market. However, it is fundamentally important to know how to create unique selling points in order to avoid competing with the local Chinese market. More on www.camelliauniversal.com

Some of the warm ups I did today before I started working on my commissions.

Project 52 took me to Columbus, Indiana this week. Columbus is known for its amazing collection of modern architecture -- about 70 structures by such masters as IM Pei, Eero Saarinen, Eliel Saarinen, Kevin Roche, Richard Meier, and many more. The buildings are schools, fire stations, Cummins business related, government, and churches mostly.

I took the bus tour, which is a good overview but not a photo opportunity, and then I headed out to explore with my map. Columbus is a town of 39,000, so it's easy to find your way around and visit everything, but sadly, a lot of the buildings were closed, so I only got to see them from the outside. I'd like to go back during the day, during the week, and maybe I will find a few more places unlocked so I can explore a little more.

This is the interior of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, designed in 2002 by Ratio Architects. I pulled into the parking lot after failing to get inside two other churches, so I was excited to see cars in the parking lot and people leaving. I hurried inside with my camera and headed to the sanctuary where I captured this awesome shot -- and at some point, I realized that I was crashing a wedding. The bride and groom are just out of this frame, posing in front of the altar for their official wedding pictures. Oops. I was quiet and unobtrusive, so I hope the wedding party didn't notice me. I can't believe that I crashed a wedding.

But the interior is remarkable. The design is based on a nautilus shell, so everything is curved and coiled with very pleasing proportions (golden ratio, no doubt) and graceful lines. Do you notice the way the curved line follows the beam and continues into the stained glass window, drawing the eye to the Crucifix above the altar? Now THAT is design.

And cheers to the happy couple -- best wishes for a long and happy life together!

365/365!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Monday, April 19, 2010

Dear Friends,

It's only 365 days, and I've done it. I've taken one photo (two actually) every day for the past year and as cliche as it may be, what a year its been. I was thinking all day about how I'd go out...fireworks...craziness....simplicity....and I came up with this image which I think says everything I want to say about this past year and this project.

I started project 365 for a couple of reasons. In the middle of April '09, I was looking for something epic to do. I'd done a few short term challenges unrelated to photography in the past, and each had taught me something and brought me to some new place in my life, and right as I was searching for something new, I came across a random person's 365, and I was hooked. Secondly, my life was slowly pushing me into photography. I'd been looking for a new camera for a while, and I thought why should I buy this new camera when I can't even fully utilize my old one, so a tip online, said one should carry and use their camera with them everyday and everywhere, and 365 days later, I tend to agree. Lastly, I'd been an off and on journaler, mostly off, and I knew I wanted to remember a year, and all its ups, downs, and arounds, but each time I'd try to journal, I'd be into it for a month or two, then stop, then pick it up literally the next year, and then again 3 months or so, then I'd stop. Knowthing there has been a picture, a concrete visual memory and a written one, gave me incentive to keep at it.

Two thousand and nine was such a good year to me. I had a lot of fun with friends and family and its documented in the photos I've shared here as well as the literally thousands I've stock piled for each day...and there are thousands...I now on average take about 6,000 photos a month..that's 72,000 photos for the year!

Photography has taken on a new meaning for me. I have just recently started my own photography business and as hard as it is doing the grunt work and getting it off the ground, the more and more I do it, the more it reminds me what it feels like to truly feel alive. I wake up and I want to take pictures, I drive to work and half the time I'm taking pictures while driving (yikes), and now its helping pay the bills; its just all come full circle for me. With each opportunity, I feel more inspired and want to keep going and doing all that I can to make my dreams finally come true.

This image is how I can best describe in picture form what this project has been. First of all, I've given Narcissus a run for his money because I've had to fall in love with myself ten times over. Every single day having to take or in a lot of cases, force yourself to take a picture of yourself isn't as easy as it looks. I have had a lot of bad hair days, been in bad moods, or just felt like, why the hell am I doing this, but its the drive that kept me snapping, and kept me going. The camera for me is connection with a moment in time. Here, I've learned to connect with myself. To feel in picture forms all thsoe emotions from happy to sad to joy to pain, its all there in some form on my 365. Hide nothing, I told myself, and this is coming from a private person. This project has been an affair of the senses: touch, taste, smell, vision, hearing. Its meant finding out what compells me, what I'm truly connected to, and wouldn't you know, I've found a connection with myself that I didn't know existed prior to this project.

My advice for others wanting to take on the epic challenge of doing a 365 is this: know that its not going to be easy. Everyone isn't happy and ready to be in front of the camera everyday, but on those days think of the greater experience, the entirity of the project and you can get through those days. Trust me, I've had dozens. Be bold. Seek out people, places, or things that do make an impact on your life. The project is about your memories, not ones others come up with, so stay true to your own vision and experience. Carry your camera with you everywhere. At work I'm known as the camera lady because every time someone needs a picture, they come running straight for me because they know I have my camera. I carry my camera around now like its my cell phone, and I never leave home without it. Know that you will get bored, and find the project stale at some point, so look for inspiration. There are dozens of projects you can try within your 365 to keep you motivated. Joining flickr groups is also a great help because seeing others works can often give you that kick in the pants you need to try something new and keep going. Finally, TRUST ME, know that in the end, it is soooo worth it! I've been looking back all week long, like, wow, wow, wow, I did this. This is my life, my reality show, my year.

What will I do now.? Hmm? I have wrestled back and fourth with this, and I've debated whether or not to keep going and pick up with Day number one again tomorrow, but I've done my 365, and have put a lot of time and energy into this project and I know I deserve a little time off. So I intend to take it. No worries, I'm still going to be sporadically posting pictures as it has become almost second nature to me now, but it will be more business related photos, rather then my own personal 365 photos. I think maybe June 1, I might start back up, but its all up in the air now. Right now, its time to celebrate, and kick back, and enjoy the memories of 2009-2010 (thus far).

Finally, I want to thank anyone and everyone who has ever supported me, my 365, my business, or left me comments, emails, or feedback. You guys are the best. Its one thing to go at this alone, but its another to see people running along side you and cheering you on. Many many thanks to Royce, Marie, Mwanz, Mom2js, and Ibrahim for your continual views/comments. Love. Heart. Super Love. Heart. and Sushi. to John, the first super sexy human, other then myself, to land in my 365. Muchos Abrazos.

Remember, its only 365 days.

History of the Signorello Estate Winery:

Starting the Venture

Ray Signorello Jr. began his journey as winemaker and vineyard owner in the Napa Valley during the mid 1980's. Ray, born in San Francisco, California, moved to Vancouver, Canada where the Signorello family continues to maintain a home. Ray divides his time between Napa, San Francisco, Vancouver and business related travel. Ray's father, Ray Sr., initiated the vineyard project during the mid 1970's by purchasing the 100-acre estate located on the Silverado Trail in the beautiful Napa Valley. Ray Sr. worked side by side with Ray Jr., establishing the winery's reputation for excellence until his passing in the fall of 1998.

No Turning Back

Signorellos' original plan was to grow quality grapes to sell to existing wineries, but the harvest of 1985 changed this plan into a new level of evolvement. The bountiful crop allowed Signorellos to custom crush the excess grapes. This opportunity demonstrated what fabulous wine their vineyards were capable of producing. The project continues to grow, as do the spectacular 42 acres planted in several different varietals. Ray's continuing effort represents the invested energies that created this reality from a dream.

In 1986 the Signorellos began the second phase of the venture, this was the building of the main winery structure. This beautiful building is used for barrel storage, wine tasting and retail sales. Along with the building of the winery, wine production was expanded to include Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. By the end of the 1980's the Signorello family was thoroughly committed to making wine as well as growing grapes.

The decade of the nineties proved to be pivotal for Signorello Estate. In 1990 the first planting of red varietals began on the property- Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah.

What brought the Signorellos to the Napa Valley was the romantic side of winemaking; growing grapes, working the land, and enjoying the wine country lifestyle of camaraderie, good wine and great meals. While the Valley lifestyle is a very real part of the business, there is a serious responsibility to making a dream become a reality, both father and son realized this fact early in the endeavor.

This venture was a dream; now it is reality.

Lujiazui, which literally means "Lu's Mouth", is located in the Pudong New District on the eastern bank of Huangpu River. It forms a peninsula on a bend of the Huangpu river, which turns from flowing north to flowing east. The importance of Lujiazui stems from the fact that it lies directly across the river from the Bund, the old financial and business district of Shanghai, and just south of the confluence of the Suzhou Creek with the Huangpu River.

Currently, there are more than 30 buildings over 25 stories high with commerce as their leading function, and over 504 domestic and overseas financial and insurance corporations located in Lujiazui.

The success of Pudong in the past 20 years has fueled tourism and business related travel to Shanghai. Pictures of the Pudong skyline dominate Shanghai tourism materials, and there are 5 five-star hotels in the Lujiazui area, providing approximately 2,443 rooms, and three more five-star hotels are expected in the area in the coming years, adding more than 1,200 luxury units.

Lurton also has business related with wine on France, Spain, and Portugal.

They arrived here as consultants of a very well known Argentine winery in 1992, and later they bought some fields and developed this project almost in a desert land. They were the first to develop the south of Valle de Uco in 1996, now followed by many others.

In contrast with other wineries, that contract experts to manage the technical stuff, they know about wine and also seem to like innovation. They have a new machine to separate graves unique in the country, and they put graves on the oak cast to soften the wine among other innovations.

Production is relatively small and from their own fincas at 1100m.

Between a busy weekend with very little free time and lousy weather, I haven't had much of a chance to take any photos recently. Here in Portland, we had what people are referring to as the "bummer summer" -- it didn't start until July 5, and seemed to promptly end on Labor Day. I want to upload something, so I'll mine some of my old photos.

Last November, I spent a few days in Miami's famed South Beach for a business-related conference. While the rain and cool weather had already startled to settle on the northwest, Miami was still beautiful and warm. As much as I love Portland, I almost didn't want to leave Miami.

An interesting note -- I stayed at the Fontainebleu Hotel since my conference was held there. The day I left, Sammy Sosa was hosting a birthday bash in the same ballroom where my conference had been held the day before. Unfortunately, my invitation was apparently lost in the mail.

350 Water Street, Vancouver, BC.

Description of Historic Place:

The McConnell Block is a three storey plus lower level masonry commercial building, located in the historic district of Gastown, in a triangular block where Water Street joins West Cordova Street with frontages on both streets. It was built as a contiguous structure with the adjacent Jones Block.

Heritage Value:

Gastown is the historic core of Vancouver, and is the city's earliest, most historic area of commercial buildings and warehouses. The McConnell Block is representative of the importance of Gastown as the trans-shipment point between the terminus of the railway and Pacific shipping routes, and the consequent expansion of Vancouver into western Canada's predominant commercial centre in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This structure is a clear indication of the extent and prosperity of commercial trade during the earliest period of the city's development. After the arrival of the transcontinental railway, office spaces were required for businesses related to the commercial activities of the area, and in 1890, G.S. McConnell commissioned this building to fill this need. McConnell was a prominent local citizen, and later served a two year term as city alderman.

The McConnell Block is also significant as an early design by architect Noble Stonestreet Hoffar (1843-1907). One of Vancouver's first architects, Hoffar made a considerable contribution to the evolution of the city in the period between 1886 and the mid-1890s with his design and construction of many of the city's largest and most substantial Victorian Italianate structures. The McConnell Block is a modest example of his work, built as a contiguous structure with the adjacent Jones Block. Its simple detailing, and the eccentric differences in detailing between the two halves of the structure, represents the vernacular, almost haphazard approach to construction in the first years of Vancouver's settlement, when building materials and financing were intermittently available.

Source: City of Vancouver, Heritage Planning Street Files

Character-Defining Elements:

The character-defining elements of the McConnell Block include:

- location on the south side of Water Street, in close proximity to the waterfront of Burrard Inlet and the Canadian Pacific Railway yard

- siting on the property lines, with no setbacks

- location on a trapezoidal lot, as a result of the irregular street layout of Gastown

- double street frontage on Water Street and West Cordova Street, as a result of the narrowing depth of the wedge-shaped lot

- modest form, scale and massing as exemplified by the three storey plus lower level height, flat roof and small footprint

- simple vernacular detailing typical of the first years of construction in Vancouver

- masonry construction: brick side walls; brick cladding on front facades with flush-struck mortar joints; massive granite sills on the south side; modest sandstone detailing; and simple corbelled brick cornice

- fenestration, including: two round-arched double-hung 2-over-2 wood-sash windows at the second floor on both street frontages; four double-hung 1-over-1 wood-sash windows in segmental arched openings at the third floor on both street frontages; and large rectangular storefront windows at ground level on both frontages

- iron I-beams with rosettes spanning the Cordova Street storefronts

- prefabricated round cast iron columns at storefronts

- surviving interior features such as original room layouts

Broderheim (Brother-Home) Norwegian Lutheran congregation organized in 1884 during the era of mass European immigration. This church structure was built in 1906, since the congregation used a local log cabin as the first building, proof that for the Norwegians settling this area it was more important to meet for worship services than it was to have a "proper" church structure. The fact that this church strongly identifies with being Norwegian stems from the fact that early immigrants knew very little English, often a few words, phrases, or farm and business-related language, so it was necessary to have services in Norwegian and Norwegian only. Scandinavian congregations also called on a pastor from their native country for this reason.

From Wikipedia:

"The Eiffel Tower (French: La Tour Eiffel, nickname La dame de fer, the iron lady) is an 1889 iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris that has become both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tallest building in Paris, it is the most-visited paid monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year. Named for its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair.

The tower stands 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building. Upon its completion, it surpassed the Washington Monument to assume the title of tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years, until the Chrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930. Not including broadcast antennas, it is the second-tallest structure in France after the 2004 Millau Viaduct. The metal structure of the Eiffel Tower weighs 7,300 tonnes while the entire structure, including non-metal components, is approximately 10,000 tonnes.

The tower has three levels for visitors. Tickets can be purchased to ascend, by stairs or lift, to the first and second levels. The walk to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the walk from the first to the second level. The third and highest level is accessible only by elevator. Both the first and second levels feature restaurants.

Gustave Eiffel engraved on the tower seventy-two names of French scientists, engineers and other notable people. This engraving was painted over at the beginning of the twentieth century but restored in 1986–1987 by the Société Nouvelle d'exploitation de la Tour Eiffel, a company contracted to operate business related to the Tower."

This engraving was painted over at the beginning of the twentieth century but restored in 1986–1987 by the Société Nouvelle d'exploitation de la Tour Eiffel, a company contracted to operate business related to the Tower.

The Tuileries Garden (French: Jardin des Tuileries) is a public garden located between the Louvre Museum and the Place de la Concorde in the 1st arrondissement of Paris.

Created by Catherine de Medicis as the garden of the Tuileries Palace in 1564, it was first opened to the public in 1667, and became a public park after the French Revolution.

In the 19th and 20th century, it was the place where Parisians celebrated, met, promenaded, and relaxed.

Many sculptures are found in the Tuileries, including works by Aristide Maillol, Henry Moore, Germaine Richier, Auguste Rodin and Gaston Lachaise.

"The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel is a triumphal arch in Paris, located in the Place du Carrousel on the site of the former Tuileries Palace. It was built between 1806-1808 to commemorate Napoleon's military victories of the previous year. The more famous Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile nearby was designed in the same year, but it took thirty years to build, and it is about twice as massive.

The monument is 63 feet (19 m) high, 75 feet (23 m) wide, and 24 feet (7.3 m) deep. The 21 feet (6.4 m) high central arch is flanked by two smaller ones, 14 feet (4.3 m) high. Around its exterior are eight Corinthian columns of granite, topped by eight soldiers of the Empire.

The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel is at the eastern end of the so-called Axe historique ("grand historic axis") of Paris, a nine-kilometre-long linear route which dominates much of the northwestern quadrant of the city. It is, in effect, the backbone of the Right Bank.

Looking west, the arch is perfectly aligned with the obelisk in the Place de la Concorde, the centerline of the grand boulevard Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe at the Place de l'Étoile, and, although it is not directly visible from the Place du Carrousel, the Grande Arche de la Défense. Thus, the axis begins and ends with an arch."

From Wikipedia:

"Notre Dame de Paris (French for Our Lady of Paris), also known as Notre Dame Cathedral, is a Gothic, Catholic cathedral on the eastern half of the Île de la Cité in the fourth arrondissement of Paris, France. It is the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Paris: that is, it is the church that contains the cathedra (official chair), of the Archbishop of Paris, currently André Vingt-Trois. Notre Dame de Paris is widely considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in France and in Europe. It was restored and saved from destruction by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, one of France's most famous architects. Notre Dame de Paris was one of the first Gothic cathedrals, and its construction spanned the Gothic period. Its sculptures and stained glass show the heavy influence of naturalism, unlike that of earlier Romanesque architecture.

Notre Dame de Paris was among the first buildings in the world to use the flying buttress (arched exterior supports). The building was not originally designed to include the flying buttresses around the choir and nave. After the construction began and the thinner walls (popularized in the Gothic style) grew ever higher, stress fractures began to occur as the walls pushed outward. In response, the cathedral's architects built supports around the outside walls, and later additions continued the pattern.

The cathedral suffered desecration during the radical phase of the French Revolution in the 1790s, when much of its religious imagery was damaged or destroyed. During the 19th century, an extensive restoration project was completed, returning the cathedral to its previous state."

I love that my workspace changes from day to day, although, Plum is a permanent staple. ^___~ Whatever projects for personal or business related work I'm doing, I always have happy dollies, toys and art surrounding me. Life is good.

I finally found Lalaloopsy Micro dolls at a Walmart near me. I'd been trying to find them since I first found out about 'em months ago. And wouldn't you know, I actually got the one I wanted in the first bag I opened! (She's the white haired, pink skinned girl known as #2 in the first series.) I had to repaint her bow a respectable shade of pink though. I don't know who at MGA thinks that magenta is pink, but it's NOT! I take my pinks very seriously.

Paris Hilton apparently visited Montreal the same weekend I did, for some kind of personal appearance for her new shoe line at Brown's Shoes on Sainte Catherine Street between Drummond and Stanley.

Apparently fans lined up for hours on Saturday, April 5th, just to say hello to her. But I wasn't aware of her appearance and opted to travel to the Town of Mount Royal to take photographs around the Ferrari dealership and then I took photos around the extreme western part of downtown Montreal.

I would have ignored the tabloid crap and just pestered her with business-related questions about Hilton hotels.

It's been exactly a year that I moved to Delhi from Bangalore. But all this time, I never really got a chance to go out and fall in love with the city until lately. Last one month was spent making this video. From the ancient city of Indraprastha to the seven cities during Muslim rule and now to the Lutyen’s Delhi, Delhi has seen thousands of years of being a capital. And years form now, no matter how we humans do as a species, Delhi will remain alive in some form. 5000 photos went into creating this film. Stella Darby was the madam of the Cozy Rooms bordello from 1928 to 1967. Her bronze statue stands outside its former entrance door. The Medernach Building (built ca. 1898), located at 333-339 South Main Street in Pendleton, Oregon, is a contributing property of the South Main Street Commercial Historic District, recognized on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. As of 2014, some rather kitschy storefronts were removed, and a statue of the mid-20th century brothel madam Stella Darby was placed out in front. A town once famous for its bootlegging and bordellos, Pendleton was considered by cowboys of the time to be the entertainment capital of the Northwest. Among the 32 saloons and 18 brothels that called Pendleton home, the most notorious of these was Madame Darby’s Cozy Rooms. This statue of Madame Darby, though a bit controversial, reminds visitors of a more colorful part of Pendleton’s history. Stella Darby stands proudly at the entrance to her risqué establishment. The Stella Darby bronze is also the only privately owned statue on the Pendleton Bronze Trail, and is dedicated to Pam Severe, who established the Working Girls Hotel and dedicated her life to preserving Pendleton’s underground history / Pendleton is a city and the county seat of Umatilla County, Oregon. A European-American commercial center began to develop here in 1851, when Dr. William C. McKay established a trading post at the mouth of McKay Creek. A United States Post Office named Marshall (for the owner, and sometime gambler, of another local store) was established April 21, 1865, and later renamed Pendleton, after politician and diplomat George H. Pendleton (1825–1889), who served as a U.S. Representative and Senator from Ohio. The city was incorporated by the Oregon Legislative Assembly on October 25, 1880. By 1900, Pendleton was the fourth-largest city in Oregon. The Pendleton Woolen Mills and Pendleton Round Up became features of the city captured in early paintings by Walter S. Bowman. Like many cities in Eastern Oregon, where thousands of Chinese immigrant workers built the transcontinental railroad, it had a flourishing Chinatown that developed as the workers settled here. The sector is supposed to have been underlain by a network of tunnels, which are now a tourist attraction. The authenticity as a Chinese tunnel system has been questioned. The town is the cultural center of Eastern Oregon. Pendleton's "Old town" is listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) have their property nearby. They have established the Wildhorse Resort & Casino and golf course on the reservation to generate revenue for development and welfare. They have also built the Tamástslikt Cultural Institute, for education and interpretation of their cultures. Pendleton Woolen Mills is a maker of wool blankets, shirts, and an assortment of other woolen goods. Founded in 1909 by Clarence, Roy and Chauncey Bishop, the company built upon earlier businesses related to the many sheep ranches in the region. A wool-scouring plant opened in Pendleton in 1893 to wash raw wool for shipping. In 1895, the scouring mill was converted into a mill that made wool blankets and robes for Native Americans. Both businesses failed to survive, but the Bishops, with the help of a local bond issue, enlarged the mill and improved its efficiency. They developed a successful line of garments and blankets with "vivid colors and intricate patterns."

The festival is to promote animation and comic books and characters.
