The FRM was unfortunately only a single prototype. Unfortunately because it was a bus that drivers, mechanics and passengers liked.
One wonders what the history of London Transport in the seventies and eighties would have been like if these had been available in bulk rather than the Fleetlines.
The idea of the front entrance, rear-engined Routemaster was a response to the pressures of staff shortages and the pervasiveness of the new generation of rear-engined buses that were all the fashion.
In 1964 London Transport started a collaboration with AEC and Park Royal to develop the bus. With the Routemaster already being seen to be a good design with high reliability and public acceptability, it seemed sensible to employ the RM technology. In the event 80% of parts were from the RM standard parts list.

Country garage bashing 😎 a mere 45 years ago, almost to the day!
Back in the day, when I was a young avid bus spotter, I used to enjoy travelling around London visiting the various bus garages. It was always a challenge to remember where some of the far-flung garages were located, let alone try and get round them without being thrown out 😅
Some of the smaller and more remote country garages I only visited occasionally, and Chelsham (CM) was certainly one that I don't recall going round very often. However, it did have extra interest though as the field behind the garage became full of redundant buses in the early 80s.
I visited Chelsham a few times as it was an interesting garage, with a large number and variety of stored buses. More garage photos to follow soon.
Here we see the first of the fleet of eleven Daimler Fleetline AFs that were delivered new to London Country in 1972. After barely a decade, they were all withdrawn and deemed redundant!

The AF Daimler Fleetlines were London Country's first double-deckers - other than those inherited from London Transport. They had had fairly good experiences with older Fleetlines: the XF class had been based at East Grinstead for most of their trials, and still were. They had been reckoned to be better than their Atlantean contemporaries, the XAs. One man operation of doubledeckers was now legal, and London Country saw that it would be vital for their economics. Some of their trunk flows required doubledeckers for the peaks or for short sections of route, although at other times and places they would be running fairly empty. When they were offered eleven Fleetlines in 1972, that had been ordered by Western Welsht, London Country seized them with some enthusiasm, and put them into Godstone for the 410.

Some of the smaller and more remote country garages I only visited occasionally, and Swanley (SJ) was certainly one that I don't recall going round very often. It did have extra interest though as the garage grounds became full of redundant buses in the early 80s (more garage photos to follow soon)
After a typically brief service life with London Transport of just seven years, DMS654 (MLK 654L) is seen here at the back of Swanley garage, probably already in storage. It had been in use for a couple of years with LCBS as a trainer, and was later sold to Midland Red.
I'm not sure how many DMSs were used by London Country as trainers and gained this LCBS livery - anyone?
Thanks to bobcat267 apparently there were just seven i fact bought by LCBS for trainers in June 1980:

After a reasonably decent service life with London Transport of ten years, DMS640 (MLK 640L) is seen here at the back of Garston (GR) garage near Watford. It had been in use for a couple of years with LCBS as a trainer, and lasted another few months before being sold to Midland Red. Garage bashing 😎 a mere 44 years ago
Back in the day, when I was a young avid bus spotter, I used to enjoy travelling around London visiting the various bus garages. It was always a challenge to remember where some of the far-flung garages were located, let alone try and get round them without being thrown out 😅
A sad end... I knew I had a shot of poor old RM1343 somewhere. When I took this picture, the Routemaster was 20 years old and the Fleetline a mere 5 years old!
Leyland engined Routemaster RM1343 (343 CLT) is seen alongside Fleetline DMS2403 ((OJD 403R) - both seen in a dilapidated state dumped at the back of Bexleyheath bus garage in south east London.
A lot of buses were cannibalised in the 1980s - I believe there was a chronic shortage of spare parts. Not too many Routemasters were allowed to get into this sorry state though.
RM1343 (343 CLT) was an early casualty, being withdrawn in 1975 for spare parts - one of the non-standard Leyland engined examples of the fleet.

Transferred to TC after overhaul then H
75-80 stored at NX (New Cross)
80 withdrawn from service at WH (West Ham)
80-83 stored at Bexleyheath and gradually stripped
11/83 sold to Ensign (Purfleet) and scrapped
DMS2403 (OJD 403R) another one of London Transport's short lived fleet of DMSs with a very short working life of just a year or so!
1977 new to BX (Bexleyheath)
2/78 into store at BX
1981 still in store at BX
9/82 formally withdrawn at BX

What a waste of money!

The Londoner - London's bus of the future in the 1970s! Entering service in 1971, the DMSs eradicated the venerable RTs from the streets of London by the end of the decade. After 2,646 deliveries, swathes of these buses were already being sold off as unsuitable for London streets. By the late 1970s, the DMSs had already been superseded by the Titans and Metrobuses, not to mention the MD Metro Scanias that came in between. A couple of rare beasts here - there were only eight XFs and they spent most of their lives at East Grinstead. I was lucky to see all of them. XF5 was apparently sold for scrap at the time I visited (see bus history below).
SMW13 was one of the fifteen buses diverted from South Wales - they never seemed to me to fit in with the London Country fleet. I cleared them too :) The SMW was apparently sold for scrap just a few months after I visited (see bus history below).
Interestingly, both classes saw their demise in 1981 - the year that I visited Chelsham

The XF Daimler Fleetlines were the OTHER rear-engined buses that were being bought in large numbers by operators round the country in 1965. When London Transport ordered fifty Leyland Atlanteans (the XAs) for evaluation they played fair and ordered some Fleetlines as well: just eight, that would go to the Country Area for evaluation first. Part of the plan with these was to evaluate them as dual purpose vehicles, as crewed double-deckers during peak hours and as one-person-operated single deckers at off peak times. A lockable gate was incorporated to enable the top deck to be locked off, so that it would then legally be a single-decker for passenger carrying purposes. (Double decker one person operation was illegal at that time).
The eight XFs went into service before the Atlanteans, on 15th September 1965. They were all allocated to East Grinstead (EG), where they took over from the RTs on route 424, a long wiggly route from Reigate to East Grinstead. This offered the experience of crush-loadings in the Reigate peak - hours, urban operation in East Grinstead, and rural quiet in between.
The XAs were sold to Hong Kong in 1973, but the XFs continued with London Country until the end of 1981, by which time they were the only ex-London Transport buses still in operation with the company. They had outlasted many of their LT successors too, the DMS class! XF1 and XF3 went into preservation. More on the XFs here: www.busspotter.com/XAXF/XF.htm

The Londoner - LT Daimler Fleetlines
A smart-looking Daimler Fleetline D1111 (GHV 111N) (converted from a DM) seen at the front of Holloway garage. Not sure why I took this photo as I was not exactly fond of the DMSs 'boxes' and usually trained my camera towards the Routemasters - in this case, I think I was attracted to the symmetrical number 1111.
Note the position of the roundel - relocated from the centre of the body to accommodate 't-shaped' adverts!
The DM buses were DMSs re-designed for conductor operation, with the afc equipment removed to allow for extra standing space for busy routes. However, some of the DMs were later fitted with the afc equipment and designated 'D' to differentiate them from the original DMSs - as seen here.

In 1998, the bus was exported to the Netherlands!
Route 168A - was the northern section of Route 168 renumbered and diverted via Waterloo. The route commenced operation in Jan 1965 with Holloway RTs (originally J garage, then HT). Cobham Bus Museum - in 1972, the London Bus Preservation Group (LBPG) acquired a former World War II aircraft factory, now demolished, near Cobham, Surrey, where the private Cobham Bus Museum was established, taking its name from the location. Although the museum had in the interim become a Registered Charity and a Registered Museum, by the early 2000s its future was uncertain as the building was deteriorating and planning permission could not be obtained to operate a public museum from the location, thereby jeopardising both the charitable and museum statuses. Eventually, the operating Trust was able to negotiate the acquisition of a large plot of land from the nearby Brooklands Museum Trust on the location of the former Brooklands racing circuit and aircraft production site. A deal was struck for the redevelopment of the old museum site and the construction of a new building at the new location, thus providing the museum with a secure home from where it could open daily to the public. The new, purpose-built premises opened on 1 August 2011 and the London Bus Museum name was adopted.
