Phase 5A of BusConnects Dublin launched on Sunday. Three new routes have been introduced in west Dublin and Kildare - Route W4 between Tallaght and Blanchardstown, Route W61 between Maynooth and Hazelhatch, and route W62 between Newcastle and Tallaght. All three routes are operated by Go-Ahead Ireland.

Ex Dublin Bus SG313, now Go-Ahead’s 11604 arrives at The Square, Tallaght on new route W4.

As part of the new BusConnects scheme, various renumberings and network rejiggings are starting to take place across Dublin. One of the first is the so-called C-spine, taking over the former 25, 66 and 67 corridor of services out to the west of Dublin and Lucan, and the towns of Maynooth, Leixlip and Celbridge in the east of County Kildare.

One of the new services is the X30, replacing the 25X between Dodsboro and UCD Belfield. Broadstone's AX586 is seen here at the Dodsboro terminus having just worked the 17:25 departure off UCD.

Getting one of Dublin's last 24 or so ALX400 B7TLs on a peak time only express route of all things was nothing short of a pleasant surprise! Sadly the photo isn't the greatest. Handheld in the dark doesn't go too well!

Conyingham Road has become the latest garage to go ALX-400 free, the type going back there to October/November 2000 when AV93-105 entered service there.

AX610-613 have been holding out there since the 9 hybrid demonstrators arrived in 2019, and indeed by the time the above was photographed AX610 & 613 were withdrawn, the commencement of PA216-239 arriving here finishing them off

AX612 lays over at River Forest before operating a return working on the L54 to Red Cow LUAS, it was withdrawn 2 days later.

AX's remain in use in Broadstone & Summerhill, while ALX400's also remain in the fleet in the training school and city tours.

Bus Connects, the redesign of the bus network in Dublin, started on Sunday 27th June 2021. The first phase was the H-Spine which covers the Howth Road corridor through Raheny.

SG 318 is seen outside Donaghmede Shopping Centre with an inbound service to Abbey Street Lower on route H1. This route is a direct replacement for route 29A, though future plans have it extended to Clongriffin. SG 318 was previously based in Donnybrook Garage. 11/07/2021

While Broadstone have recently put their PA class electrics into use they also reinstated many of their AX class deckers, albeit on borrowed time even on euro duties with more PAs on the way and Busconnects likely to take a chunk out of them.

Broadstone based AX593 passes Arthur Griffith Park in Lucan on the 25A on the last part of its journey.

May 2021

After many years of planning and consultation, Bus Connects starts its roll-out in Dublin on Sunday 26th September. First to be done is the Howth Road corridor which will be the H-Spine.

Route 32 is to become route H2 with a minor re-routing through Portmarnock. Route 31 is to become route H3 to Howth Summit with no changes. SG 288 is seen in Raheny with a service on route 32 to Dublin from Malahide, while behind it is SG 441 with a service on route 31 from Howth Summit to Dublin City Centre. This was the last day for both routes before the changes.

SG 288 was based in Harristown Garage but transferred to Clontarf Garage to ensure enough buses in the new livery for the H Spine launch. 26/06/2021

All mostly follow the number routes with Route 6 being the most changed route, now esentially being what the 31B was some years ago, the only difference being it now running via Watermill Road and James Larkin Road.

Dublin Bus (Clontarf Depot) Volvo B5TL/Wrightbus SG345 proceeds out of Howth on Route 6. It had run the first departure from Abbey Street. SG345 had transferred into Clontarf just before the weekend from Conyingham Road Garage,

Go-Ahead’s 12138 is pictured on route 104 at the newly redesigned bus terminus of Clontarf DART station.

This will soon be the terminus for new BusConnects route N2 between Clontarf DART station and Heuston Rail Station. A new extended bus bay has been added to accommodate the service which will be every 15 minutes at peak.

The work includes an extended bus bay, new bus shelter, EV charging, bike parking and a pedestrian footpath along the bus lane leading to Alfie Byrne Road.

Dublin Bus SG 286 arrives into Malahide with a service on route 32 from Dublin. This was the last day of the 32 before it was replaced by new route H2 under Bus Connects.

DublinBus AX639 captured at the Infirmary Road/Phoenix Park terminus of the 11. With the introduction of the lastest BusConnects changes, the northern terminus of the 11 changed from Wadelai Park in Santry to the former 46A terminus just off the North Circular Road.

AXs are really the type that just refuse to be defeated - with more SGs transferring to Go-Ahead, the AX fleet has made another resurgance with several examples returned to service in recent months.

AX639 is back longer, having returned to service in November 2023 having been initially withdrawn back in December 2021.

Since Busconnects and the C Spine hit Lucan,Dodsboro has never been far from the news. Dodsboro lost the 25,an odd decision given the large expansion in nearby Shakelton. This will be eased when the C2 is rerouted to serve Shakelton.

In the meantime Conyingham Road's recently delivered Enviro 400ER PA225 heads past the Holy Mary at Dodsboro en route to Adamstown to take up an L53 working.

May 2022

16th October 2022 saw the roll out of Phase 4 of Bus Connects in Dublin. This saw the services in Ballyfermot reorganised with new G-Spine routes G1 and G2 replacing the former routes 79A and the western part of route 40. Radial route 60 replaced parts of the former routes 79 and 79A.

Dublin Bus PA 221 is seen crossing Samuel Beckett Bridge on new route 60 from Sir John Rogerson's Quay to Red Cow Luas via Kilmainham and Cherry Orchard. 16/10/2022

The next phase of Busconnects kicked in on May 29th 2022 which the effective decoupling of the 17A,now split into the N4 and N6. Dublin Bus operate the N4,from Blanchardstown to Point Depot in Docklands. Dublin Bus operates this from its Harristown depot.

N6 is the GAI half, operating from Finglas to Kilbarrick, via Charlestown,Balbutcher lane and by Ballymun Road resumes the former 17A routing. The frequency on both has been fairly well upped, averaging every 10 minutes.

In Finglas Village 11502 picks up on the N6 overtaken by Dublin Bus GT131.

June 2022

As part of the C-Spine changes in November 2021 under Bus Connects, a number of new local routes were created in the Lucan area. Route L51 connects Adamstown Station with Blanchardstown Shopping Centre, going via Lucan Village.

Apparently the E1 is the busiest route on the Dublin Bus network.

It carried 7.5 millions passengers last year.

More info.

Bus Connects, the redesign of the bus network in Dublin, started on Sunday 27th June 2021. The first phases was the H-Spine which covers the Howth Road corridor through Raheny.

SG 279 is seen passing St. Fintan's Church in Sutton with a service on route 6 from Abbey Street to Howth Station. This route replaces former routes 31A and 31B and operates via Watermill Road in Raheny and Shielmartin Road in Sutton. 04/07/2021

The third phase of Bus Connects was implemented on the 29th May 2022. Dublin Bus operate new route N4 which runs from Point Village to Blanchardstown Shopping Centre via Killester and Finglas. Route N6 operated by Go-Ahead Ireland between Kilbarrack and Finglas also started on the same day. Both routes replaced the 17A.

Dublin Bus GT 133 is seen at the Point Village terminus of route N4. 29/05/2022

On the 28th November 2021, as part of the C-Spine rollout for Bus Connects, a number of new local bus routes were introduced in the Lucan area. One such route was the L54. This runs from River Forest (Leixlip) to Red Cow Luas stop via Lucan and Clondalkin.

Dublin Bus SG 348 is seen at Red Cow Luas stop with a service on route L54 to River Forest (Leixlip). 19/02/2022

While attention of Ireland’s Enviro 400ERs is largely focused on Dublin,Bus Eireann also have in the region of 60 of the type,PAD76-114 of which are in Galway and 115-135 in Limerick. While Galway had a total conversion of the city services to the type,Limerick still has a sizeable contingent of VWL & VWD. Also unlike Galway’s batch,Limerick’s have made the odd foray to Cork.

PAD116 picks up on William Street on the 304 to the University of Limerick. The type will soon be joined by 20 Wright Electroliners, wherether these replace the last VWL/VWDs,as expected,or displace the PADs remains to be seen. With Busconnects coming to Cork one can’t help but wonder if the temptation to send the PADs to Cork is there.

June 2022

After many years of planning and consultation, Bus Connects starts its roll-out in Dublin on Sunday 26th September. First to be done is the Howth Road corridor which will be the H-Spine.

Route 31A is being replaced by spine route H3 (to Howth Summit) and radial route 6 (to Howth via Shielmartin Road). SG 283 is seen in Raheny with a service on route 31A to Shielmartin Road via Howth. This bus was based in Harristown Garage but transferred to Clontarf Garage to ensure enough buses in the new livery for the H Spine launch. This was the last day for both routes before the changes. 26/06/2021
