The Lower Bridge, Antietam Creek. Antietam Battlefield. Sharpsburg, MD. Early morning.
The view is to the west, from the Federal position, facing the Confederate defenders in the Quarry and the town of Sharpsburg.
In the third and final phase of the battle, Federal troops, under the command of General Ambrose Burnside, spent most of the day attempting to take the bridge, and in the process sustained terrible casualties. The bridge was eventually carried, and Federal forces approached Sharpsburg and the Army of Northern Virginia's headquarters. Confederate troops, under the command of General A.P. Hill, directly entered the battle after a 17-mile march from Harper's Ferry which they had begun eight hours earlier. Confederate counterattacks pushed the Federal left wing back behind Antietam Creek, and this effectively ended the Battle of Antietam.

Burnside Bridge is located in Washington County, Maryland and crosses the Antietam Creek. It was constructed in 1836 and was heavily involved the American Civil War. In September 1862, during the Battle of Antietam, it was defended by Confederate troops. It is now closed to vehicular traffic. Pedestrians are permitted to cross. The large sycamore tree on the left side of the bridge is called the witness tree as it appears as a young sapling in photos taken of the bridge just after the battle.
Burnside's Bridge, located on the Antietam battlefield was the site of fierce fighting & bloodshed when numerous attempts under the Union's IX corps included Ohio, New Hampshire, Rhode Island & Connecticut failed under heavy fire from some 500 Confederates across the river on the mountains but was finally taken under General Ferrero's Brigade of New York & Pennsylvania infantry who succeeded in crossing & removing the Confederates from the hill.

For me it was one of the things I loved the most when I came to Portland. Going around the city seeing these mountains all the time.

We stopped at Antietam Battlefield on our way home from WV today. This past week has been National Park Week, with all parks having free admission. We have a lifetime NP pass, so it didn't apply to us, but it was nice getting to visit one during the special week. Burnside Bridge is the most iconic feature of this park and has just recently finished undergoing a major restoration project. The last time we were here the bridge was covered in scaffolding.
This spectacular Sycamore was there during the battle in 1862.

Antietam National Battlefield Sharpsburg Maryland. The Burnside Bridge remains one of the most recognized icons from the American Civil War. The 1862 Battle of Antietam claimed nearly 23,000 killed, wounded or missing...the bloodiest single day in American History. The current pastoral landscape serves as the most important memorial we can honor...a lasting peace forever heals the scars of war. Memorial Day 2017.
In 1862, there was a battle here as Confederate forces tried to keep Union forces from crossing this bridge over Antietam Creek. Eventually, the Union, under General Ambrose Burnside, took the bridge, but it took the army so long to cross it, Confederate forces from Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, had arrived to help in the fighting later on.
Now, it's a beautiful foot bridge in a bucolic setting. It's hard to imagine the battle that took place here.
This was a peaceful ending to a quiet evening some time ago. The colors of the sunset never panned out quite how I would have liked them to, but I really how all the other elements in this photo came together, a synchronization that I have never been able to duplicate in repeated attempts to shoot from this vantage. I really like the lines and curves made by both the traffic and the floating esplanade. A more colorful sunset would have been nice, but maybe then the photo would have lost some of the nice balance I think it has as is.
Happy Worldwide Pinhole Day everyone! Make sure to take at least one pinhole shot sometime today.
