Burning Man 2017, Radical Ritual, was a very, very hot year, even for Burning Man. Wind was mostly absent, and the stifling heat largely held reign as the predominent weather feature this year. Fortunately there were winds over the central plaza, where I was able to launch my kite and get in some photos of the art and of the huge expanse of the Black Rock Desert.
Camera and Kite information:
6' Rokkoku kite, with a Canon S90, and CHDK. Images were being taken every 3 seconds, the camera was attached to the kite using the Brooxes Simplex kit.
I'm about to attend my first festival since Burning Man (where this photo was taken) over the summer solstice. New Zealand has kind of shut down like most countries in the world, but at least we don't have any active Corona cases here... so the chance to go to an epic music festival with no face masks in a place called Paradise near Queenstown - I can't say no! I've had a few of my cool hippie yoga friends send me messages that they've had visions and dreams that I must be there in attendance...that somehow the universe will be out of balance if I stay home and watch Netflix while crying into a gallon of ice cream. Well who am I to argue with the hallucinogenic visions of people that are barely functional in normal society? I'm totally kidding... these are my kinda people and I'm very excited. I'll be enjoying all the workshops, the remoteness, the disconnection, and of course I'll be doing some photography too. The festival is called Ancient Future and it will take place over the summer solstice on the longest day of the year, which is the 21st of December here in NZ. I'm sure I'll get more than a few zodiac readings... Just so all the astrologers are prepared: I was born on 7/7. That's right... a Cancer. Big surprise... Anyway, I'm already sounding like one of the other hundreds of awesome hippies for the New Zealand Woodstock.

Back there you can see my friend Cliff Baise in full-Cliff position. Look at him with his Canon. What's that on there, Cliff? A 24-70? Yeah, or something like that. Wow you can tell Cliff is serious when he's in that position.
Today, I begin the loooong trek into the Black Rock Desert for my 10th year in a row at Burning Man. It's always an ordeal to get out there, then yet another ordeal to survive and thrive for the length of the event. I'm ready though! This year's theme is Metamorphoses. Every year there are several of these twisters that rip across the playa. I usually ride my bike right towards them and let them whip me around the periphery while I take my feet off the pedals and get spun around while taking photos... weeeeee!!! #burningman #industwetrust
I don't remember this lady's name, but I thought she looked a lot like Gal Gadot. I usually try to exchange information with people I take photos of, but here's another one that slipped between the cracks! I think I took this during the Bunny march and I was quite distracted taking hundreds of photos like a crazy person.

Look at this incredible tree in the middle of the desert. It's decorated with 250,000 LEDs. You don't even have to be on drugs to get tripped out! #burningman
Here's a photo taken with the Hasselblad on day 1 when we have our camp meeting. Everyone pitches in to contribute and this is the time when we figure out who does what. By the way, don't forget about the Burning Man photo walk on Wednesday at 7:30 PM at center camp - see ya there! #burningman

In the middle of one afternoon, there was a big gay pride parade that went across the middle of the desert. I mean, I assume that it was a gay pride parade was going on. Maybe it was just a bunch of really fit dudes who have a shared hobby of colorful flags. I didn't ask but they seemed super happy for me to take photos. How cool are these Laura Kimpton art installations at Burning Man? I have four works going up for auction soon. All the money raised will go to support other Burning Man artists. I'm submitting one of Laura Kimpton's works (not this one, but I do quite like this one). I believe the event is on November 17 in San Francisco. There are many weddings that pop up here and there. I arrived at this one around sunset. This girl had some amazing braids... wow gals take a lot of effort to make all this stuff happen. I feel so lazy. I can barely get dressed in the morning with whatever happens to be around me.
What an AMAZING PHOTO WALK! Thanks again for coming out. How lucky were we to have that light? And then some F-14s flew over us, we saw a girl on drugs crying at the sunset, man, pretty much everything happened. Here's an amazing zoetrope that depicts Charon crossing the River Styx. If people start pulling the ropes in the right syncopation, the wheel spins faster and faster until a strobe appears, showing the animated skeleton doing rowing across the river. It's just amazing... the minds that come up with this stuff?!?! Maybe now you see why I get so inspired out here. #burningman
Here's a new friend I made this year at our camp, His name is Aaron. Wow is this guy ever into this kinda stuff. You should have seen his amazing tent and setup. I regret that I did not get a good photo of it. Maybe next year, Aaron! I'm glad I was able to get this one, though.
The tree in the middle of the desert glowed all day and all night. One evening, there was a 70-piece orchestra here and a ballet where they performed The Rites of Spring. It's the first time I ever heard of a production like that at Burning Man. #treeoftenere

I saw her every day and always in different outfits. On the final night of the burn, she decided to not wear anything. #burningman
A wonderful Israeli couple had just finished an acro-yoga performance for me. They were amazing and I got some great photos that I still haven't processed. After they finished, they embraced. This was somewhere around 8:30 and E (that's how addresses work in Black Rock City... time + letter).

Here's the first night at the DMV (Department of Mutant Vehicles) when the Monaco was getting approved for night-driving. All the art cars out there have to get two approvals; one for daytime driving and the other for nighttime driving.
