This beverage lounge was on the lower level of the Great Dome Lounge car on the Great Northern Empire Builder. The train operated between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest prior to the Amtrak takeover of American passenger train service on May 1, 1971. The Empire Builder was one of the best passenger trains in the United States. The Great Dome was placed between the coaches and the dining car. All passengers had use of the lower level beverage lounge, but the upper level was reserved as the lounge for sleeping car passengers.
Amtrak still operates an Empire Builder over the old Great Northern route, and it is my favorite passenger train. The equipment today is quite different from this, but it is now an entirely bi-level train and is very comfortable.

HMS Ark Royal was the former flagship of the Royal Navy. One of three Invincible class aircraft carriers she was affectionately known as The Mighty Ark. Her keel was laid by Swan Hunter at Wallsend on 7th December 1978 and she was launched on 20th June 1981 and completed in 1985. Major deployments included the Bosnian war (1993) and the invasion of Iraq (2003). More recently, she assisted in the repatriation of air travellers stranded by the 2010 volcanic eruption.

The awesome guys over at Brick Builders Club interviewed me for their Gaming issue - AND sent me a free box of Brick Swag! - including a rock paper scissors t-shirt in LEGO form. Thanks guys! There's a bunch of cool stuff in the box - highly recommended.
Very late (12+ hours) westbound Empire Builder powers up to track speed at Big Lake MN.
Derailments on the CP and BNSF caused a lot of problems including the delay of both Empire Builders. The track between Elk River and Big Lake takes a slight turn into the sun allowing for a rare shot of #7. There's also no baggage car and it seems the consist is backwards for some reason.
This young builder pondered for a good 30 seconds before he carefully place piece of driftwood in his hand. A future architect at work?? Purposely shot low with a Meyer Optik Orestor 100mm @ ISO100 1/4000 f16 from about 16' feet away.

A view to the east as the westbound Empire Builder speeds across the prairies of north-central Montana, between Havre and Shelby. The grain elevator is in the ghost town of Devon. Thanks to flickr member Open Spaces Prairie Places for this information.
