Couldn't stay at home this a.m.
Instead of going to my gym I took my camera and went for a long walk in the local dunes and was surrounded by all this beauty...Bliss
The sea buckthorns are covered by a thin layer of frost.
( The sea buckthorn is a bushy Eurasian shrub or small tree that typically grows on sandy coasts. It bears orange berries, and some plants are spiny )

The brimstone is a fairly large, pale yellow butterfly, with distinctive, leaf-shaped wings. Adults hibernate through cold weather, so may be seen flying on warm days throughout the year, although they are most common in the spring. Usually seen in ones or twos, they are never very common, but are widespread. They can be found in damp woodlands, along sunny, woodland rides and mature hedgerows, and in large gardens. The foodplants of the larvae are buckthorn and alder buckthorn. Both shrubs are found in wet woodland, while buckthorn also occurs on dry chalk and limestone soils.

The fruits of the sea buckthorn are known for their high vitamin C content and are processed into food and skin care products.
The shrubs with their thorny branches are 0.5 to 12 m high and form a widely branched root system that extends up to 3 m deep and up to 12 m in all directions. In this way, the plants ensure a firm anchorage on soils such as those found in coastal areas with extensive steep banks.

Le Citron,
(Gonepteryx rhamni)

Seen yesterday in flight, but not as beautiful as the one in the photo, the poor guy spent a very harsh winter this year stashed in a pile of wood...he went in search of the soulmate
for his last mating before dying..
History.. , the young butterfly of the last generation born around September October..
the ability to spend the winter outside in a shelter (pile of wood, under dead leaves, cellars, etc.)
its body contains an antifreeze that allows it to resist freezing.. when it wakes up in the spring, it also wakes up and goes in search of a female in order to mate.. the female lays her eggs on the back of a leaf of its host plant (buckthorn), and also dies. After the cycle (egg, caterpillar, chrysalis)
the first generation appears in June/July, it is one of the longest-lived butterflies, so a 2nd generation can appear in September October..

Plump, smooth-plumaged bird with distinctive thin, high-pitched call. Adults have a sleek crest, black mask, pale yellow wash on the belly, and yellow-tipped tail. Juveniles are drabber than adults, with coarse streaking on the breast and a reduced mask. Widespread and fairly common in open woodlands, orchards, and shrubby areas throughout most of North America. Winter range is variable and somewhat dependent on fruit crops; sometimes ventures as far south as Panama. Often gathers in large flocks, especially around fruiting trees. Compare with Bohemian Waxwing in the northern part of range; Cedar is smaller, browner, and has a white (not rufous) undertail. (eBird)
------------
After coming across several large flocks of Bohemian Waxwings recently, we were excited to find an equally large flock of Cedar Waxwings (our more common visitors). They were stripping the buckthorn of berries. This bird had just dropped a particularly plump berry and was diving to catch it. You can see the red, waxy tips of his wings, from which he gets his name.

Cedar waxwings were really working over any remaining European buckthorn berries in a woods along the Upper Iowa River this afternoon. We set a record high temperature of 60 F today, which is thirty degrees above normal for mid-February. So long, snow!

Gonepteryx rhamni (known as the common brimstone) is a butterfly of the family Pieridae. It lives throughout the Palearctic zone and is commonly found across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Across much of its range, it is the only species of its genus, and is therefore simply known locally as the brimstone.
The brimstone relies on two species of buckthorn plants as host plants for its larvae; this influences its geographic range and distribution, as these plants are commonly found in wetlands. The adult brimstone travels to woodland areas to spend seven months overwintering. In spring when their host plants have developed, they return to the wetlands to breed and lay eggs.[4] Both the larval and adult forms of the common brimstone have protective coloration and behaviour that decreases their chances of being recognised and subsequently preyed upon.
The adult common brimstone has sexual dimorphism in its wing coloration: males have yellow wings and iridescence while females have greenish-white wings and are not iridescent. This iridescence is affected by environmental factors
This year our tree for Christmas has been assembled from sea buckthorn, its stems bleached white to almost silver by the summer sun.
We found the sea buckthorn, wind-blown, on the beach at Hayling Island on a day of blustery sunshine.

Common sea buckthorn has dense and stiff branches, and are very thorny. The leaves are a distinct pale silvery-green, lanceolate, 3–8 cm (1.2–3.1 in) long, and less than 7 mm (0.28 in) broad. It is dioecious, with separate male and female plants. The male produces brownish flowers which produce wind-distributed pollen. The female plants produce orange berries 6–9 mm (0.24–0.35 in) in diameter, soft, juicy, and rich in oils. The roots distribute rapidly and extensively, providing a nonleguminous nitrogen fixation role in surrounding soils.
This lucky little dark-eyed junco was low enough to duck below those sharp buckthorn branches. I'd say it found a good place to hide from predaceous hawks and shrikes too.

Several types of wild cherries grow in Michigan, and that's what I thought these were--wrong! The leaves are all wrong for Wild Black Cherry, Pin Cherry or Choke Cherry.
These are berries of Glossy Buckthorn, an invasive species sometimes called European Buckthorn. As the berries mature, they will become darker, almost black. Ironically this type of "buckthorn" does not have thorns.

Today was probably the coldest day so far this fall with wind chills making it feel like minus mid 20's Celcius. The sun came out today, though, after a huge dump of snow yesterday. Almost froze off my fingertips but it was great to get out there again!

Once I had assembled the alternative tree in a tall glass vase and decorated it with a string of lights, I took its photo and then had a little play.

As the berries these birds rely on are starting to dwindle, they become more and more obvious in the woods, chasing the lower fruit. The paradox of a flying animal is that our ‘low hanging fruit’ is their ‘hard to reach’ fruit. But a hard, cold and long winter means all food supplies are tapped into.
I was able to observe a small flock as it cycled between three perches: buckthorn berries, snow to wash them down in nearby maples, and then a brief digestive pause in the shorter trees in the image. I find this species among the quickest to adapt to human presence, and continue about its business, as long as the observer is trying to minimize the intrusion. I watched where the cycle took the birds, and then planted myself beside my preferred perch, not moving for about a half hour. After a couple of minutes the birds resumed their cycle, and ignored me.
I preferred the digestive pause phase for photographs, though I had a lot of fun watching them eat the snow.
Saw this lovely beauty at O'Neill Regional park which is located in the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains in southern California. The valley areas contain native coast live oak and sycamore forests as well as meadows. The hillsides are covered in cactus, chaparral, scrub oak, buckthorn and mountain mahogany. The area experiences a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. Caution is advised as the park is home to mountain lions and rattlesnakes.
This park holds special memories for me in that when I was a little girl, I had my first experience camping here. Currently, I am blessed to live nearby.

I have spent some considerable time lately on a Buckthorn eradication effort on my property. Buckthorn is a tree species originally introduced as an ornamental (some 40 years ago) which is now widely considered an invasive species in the midwest. It is a hardwood with interesting grain and color. I found this natural heart shape in one of the cut stumps - it is about 3 inches in diameter.
Beauty in all things in nature - even an invasive species.

Wonderfully fruity sea buckthorn berries right in front of the door. The bush is overflowing with berries this year and I had to cut away a few branches so that I can get into the house unhindered. The fruits came just right for the theme this Friday.
