Koko Crater (Hawaiian: Kohelepelepe or Puʻu Mai) is an extinct tuff cone located on the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu near Hawaiʻi Kai. It is a part of the Honolulu Volcanics, which were craters that formed as vents of the Koʻolau Volcano during its rejuvenation stage. During World War II, the U.S. military built bunkers on top of Koko Crater with a railroad leading to its summit. In 1966, the air force ceded administration of Koko Crater over to the City of Honolulu. It was then renamed to the Koko Head Regional Park. Within this park is the Koko Crater Trail, which is a 1.8-mile-long trail that uses the now-abandoned railroad as its pathway. The trail heads up 990 ft and 1,048 railroad cross-ties at a very steep incline, and the views at the Koko Head Crater summit are 1,208 ft above sea level.
The abandoned railway trail can be seen as the faint 'line' up the side of the crater in the photograph above (starts just above the baseball/softball field and ends at the peak of the crater). This photo was taken from the Hawai'i Kai Lookout along the side of Kalanianaʻole Highway.

Plumeria is a group of small deciduous trees or shrubs and is famous for highly scented, exotic, showy flowers. Associated with the Pacific islands such as Hawaii, plumeria flowers are shaped like a star and come in shades of white, yellow, pink, red, and multi-colors. Plumeria trees are also known for their large, leathery leaves that decorate the attractive ornamental tree from spring until fall. Plumeria trees are also called frangipani. The tropical trees are a member of the dogbane family Apocynaceae. Plumeria plants are classed as deciduous or semi-evergreen trees or shrubs. Because a plumeria tree loses its leaves in winter, the shrub-like tree can resemble a collection of branches growing from the ground. However, in spring, the plant’s beautiful foliage and spectacular plumeria flowers return to add an exotic touch to tropical gardens.

Koʻolau Range is a name given to the dormant fragmented remnant of the eastern or windward shield volcano of the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu. It is not a 'mountain range' in the normal sense, because it was formed as a single mountain called the Koʻolau Volcano (koʻolau means "windward" in Hawaiian). What remains of Koʻolau is the western half of the original volcano that was destroyed in prehistoric times when the entire eastern half—including much of the summit caldera—slid cataclysmically into the Pacific Ocean. Remains of this ancient volcano lie as massive fragments strewn nearly 100 miles over the ocean floor to the northeast of Oʻahu. Kāneʻohe Bay is what remains of the ancient volcano's summit caldera after the slide. The modern Koʻolau mountain forms Oʻahu's windward coast and rises behind the leeward coast city of Honolulu — on its leeward slopes and valleys are located most of Honolulu's residential neighborhoods. The remaining summit of the tallest peak, Puʻu Kōnāhuanui is approximately 3,100 ft tall.
The Ko‘olau Range Pali was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1972 and covers an area of 565 acres that is split between private and state ownership.

Naples is a southern italian city with a port, it faces the Mediterranean Sea and is near Mt. Vesuvius.
It’s name in Italian is Napoli , which comes from its greek name Neapolis, meaning new city.

Tup Island (also known as Koh Tup or Tub Island) is a small, picturesque island located off the coast of Ao Nang in Krabi Province, Thailand. It is renowned for its unique natural feature—a sandbar that emerges at low tide, connecting Tup Island to the neighboring Koh Mor (Mor Island) and Koh Gai (Chicken Island). This phenomenon, known as "Talay Waek" or "Separated Sea," allows visitors to walk between the islands across shallow turquoise waters .

As local lore goes, the hurricanes of 1982 (Iwa) and 1992 (Iniki) destroyed domestic chicken coops, resulting in the release of tame chickens into the jungles. These domesticated birds then mated with the wild red junglefowl (brought to the islands by the Polynesian) resulting in the feral chickens that are seen today like this one we encountered at Rock Piles Beach on the North Shore of Oahu.

On the morning of our 25th anniversary, we got up early to go watch the sunrise and found an excellent spot at Makapu'u Beach out on the black lava rock looking directly east into the rising sun. Off in the distance (on the point sticking out into the Pacific from the right) is Makapu'u Lighthouse. You'll have to look close...it is lit but very small in this photograph. And, even got a little crescent moon in the shot along with come crashing waves...a magnificent way to start our day!!

Waiale'e Beach Park is located on the North Shore of O'ahu and is not to be confused with the Waialae Beach Park near Kahala on the South Shore. This is a small white sandy beach with some tide pools and a little island right off the coast. There is no surf here, and this is not a popular beach by any means, but it's perfect for anyone looking to get away from the crowds at the famous beaches nearby. The water isn't too rough here other than in the winter, and there are some rocky areas to walk around and check out the little fish in the tide pools. You can swim out to Kukaimanini Island (seen in the distance of the photograph above), but there is no beach and the waves crash steadily on the rocky coast.

Laniakea Beach translates from Hawaiian to “wide sky”…and you’ll understand once you arrive and look beyond the sea. On Oahu's North Shore, Laniakea is also known as "Turtle Beach" where the main attraction is the green sea turtles (or Hawaiian honu) who often times can be seen resting on the beach basking in the sun.
The Hawaiian honu enjoys full protection under the federal Endangered Species Act and under Hawaii state law. It is illegal to chase, hunt, handle, injure or harass them in any way. To make sure that the turtles are not bothered, there are volunteers on Laniakea Beach who inform visitors about the turtles and use a red rope to mark the “no-go” zones. Also, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has put up informational signs.
The beach itself is rather small and has a rocky shelf. The turtles enjoy eating the seaweed that grows on it and on the surrounding rocks. When the surf is up, a strong rip current forms in the wide channel on the west side of the beach. Surfers use this beach to get to the offshore surf spots named Laniakea, Himalayas and Hultin's.

“He always thought of the sea as 'la mar' which is what people call her in Spanish when they love her. Sometimes those who love her say bad things of her but they are always said as though she were a woman. Some of the younger fishermen, those who used buoys as floats for their lines and had motorboats, bought when the shark livers had brought much money, spoke of her as 'el mar' which is masculine. They spoke of her as a contestant or a place or even an enemy. But the old man always thought of her as feminine and as something that gave or withheld great favours, and if she did wild or wicked things it was because she could not help them. The moon affects her as it does a woman, he thought.”

Kulamanu, built in 1946, was originally named Delaware Belle. She was subsequently renamed Hudson Belle and George Washington. As George Washington, the Wilson Line operated her as a river cruise vessel on the Potomac River.
Robert J. Halcro, the owner of Windjammer Cruises, bought the George Washington. The ship’s name was officially changed in March 1980 to Rella Mae (in honor of Mr. Halcro’s mother). Four steel masts and a bowsprit were added to the ship at a shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia before she sailed for Hawai‘i via the Panama Canal and Los Angeles.
Rella Mae arrived in Honolulu Harbor on Sunday, 13 July 1980 and began operations as a dinner cruise ship in August. ACES Dinner Cruises bought Windjammer Cruises in June 1996 and renamed the ship Kulamanu. Due to economic factors, the company shut down operations in May 1998 and put the ship up for sale.
Pacific Cruises owned the ship in the early 2000s. She was put up for auction in July 2006 but did not sale and continued to languish at Pier 7.
In September 2018, there was an unsuccessful attempt to sail the ship to San Francisco, California amid pressure on her owner to remove her from the harbor. Finally, the Kulamanu (IMO 8836429), which was still tied up on the Diamond Head side of Pier 7, was towed out of the harbor on Thursday, 20 June 2019. She was taken to Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor, where work began to prepare her for disposal at sea. The ship was finally disposed of offshore on 11 July 2019, just 68 days after the photograph above was taken.
