"Casa Bruno Cuadros (Catalan for Bruno Cuadros House, named after its former owner), also known as Casa dels paraigües - House of Umbrellas, is a residential and commercial building in the old town of Barcelona on Boulevard La Rambla (today number 82), that has gained notoriety primarily for its unusual, historicist facade design in the Asian style.

The architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas redesigned the house, which was built in 1858, in the years 1883-1888. As an advertisement for Bruno Cuadros' umbrella business, Vilaseca created the facade decorations of umbrellas and fans, as well as murals based on Japanese woodcuts, which are complemented by ornamental windows in the Asian style.

Of particular note is the wrought-iron Chinese dragon mounted on a corner of the house, carrying a lantern, an umbrella and a fan. The facade was restored in 1980 and is considered one of the sights of the Rambla." (Wikipedia and Google translate)

(Wikipedia)

Recollection from a previous holiday. Sadly this Bruno is no longer with us. A loyal and handsome dog (with a mind of his own at times..!) and a very good friend.

Giordano Bruno. by Ettore Ferrari (1889). Campo dei Fiori, Rome.

Giordano Bruno (1548 – 17 February 1600) was an Italian Dominican friar, philosopher, mathematician, poet, and cosmological theorist. He is known for his cosmological theories, which conceptually extended the then-novel Copernican model. He proposed that the stars were just distant sun ssurrounded by their own exoplanets and raised the possibility that these planets could even foster life of their own (a philosophical position known as cosmic pluralism). He also insisted that the universe is in fact infinite and could have no celestial body at its "center".

Starting in 1593, Bruno was tried for heresy by the Roman Inquisition on charges of denial of several core Catholic doctrines, including eternal damnation, the Trinity, the divinity of Christ, the virginity of Mary, and transubstantiation. Bruno's pantheism was also a matter of grave concern, as was his teaching of the transmigration of the soul (reincarnation).

The Inquisition found him guilty, and he was burned at the stake in Rome's Campo de' Fiori in 1600. After his death, he gained considerable fame, being particularly celebrated by 19th- and early 20th-century commentators who regarded him as a martyr for science.

Bruno trying to be unnoticed while my 2 and 4 yr old nieces were visiting and carrying on like wild banshees. He was very afraid of toddlers when we adopted him, but has gotten much better and is actually very curious about them as long as they aren't running around screaming. On this he and I are in complete agreement. He was adopted and returned previous to our adopting him and we believe the family must have had little ones who treated him poorly or were in general, not dog savvy folks.

The gift givers probably still know what they gave me for my birthday. A heartfelt thank you to both of them! I am very happy about everything!

Bruno is the cutest of the three squirrels that come to my deck, as well as the smallest. He(she?) sat under the overhang of the deck all afternoon, staying out of the rain which has been pouring in streams. This shot was taken earlier before the rain came down really hard.
