Bont Zandoogje:

Een bruine vlinder met veel oogjes op zijn vleugels. Hij leeft voornamelijk in zanderige gebieden, wat ook te herleiden is aan zijn kleur en naam.

The front legs on this Griz are amazingly huge. This photo was taken in early October on the North Slope of Alaska's Arctic region. He is standing on what is left of a Musk Ox calf, guarding it from ravens and the photographer. The Grizzly Bear was following a herd of Musk Ox and he got one calf and one young cow that I know of. This is one of the harsher parts of wildlife photography, watching the predator/prey scenerio play out.

A boar grizzly posing nicely for me in the Yukon.

The correct scientific name for the species is “brown bear,” but only coastal bears in Alaska and Canada are referred to as such, while inland bears and those found in the lower 48 states are called grizzly bears.

The brown bear is larger, primarily due to their advantage of dining on salmon. The grizzly bear has a larger shoulder hump. Both are most impressive. Always a thrill to see and be near them.

Have a wonderful weekend!
