The two forms of black-tailed deer that occupy coastal woodlands in the Pacific Northwest of North America are subspecies of the mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). They have sometimes been treated as a species, but virtually all recent authorities maintain they are subspecies. The Columbian black-tailed deer is found in western North America, from Northern California into the Pacific Northwest of the United States and coastal British Columbia in Canada. The Sitka deer is found coastally in British Columbia, southeast Alaska, and southcentral Alaska (as far as Kodiak Island).
These two subspecies thrive on the edge of the forest, as the dark forest lacks the underbrush and grasslands the deer prefer as food, and completely open areas lack the hiding spots and cover they prefer for harsh weather. One of the plants that black-tailed deer browse is western poison oak, despite its irritant content. This deer often is most active at dawn and dusk, and is frequently involved in collisions with automobiles. (Wikipedia)
This is the Columbian sub-species. Based on maps of sightings in iNaturalist, the Sitka sub-species is not found on Vancouver Island.
There were three deer roaming the parking lot at our hotel. They then just ambled across the road to the flower beds on the other side, totally oblivious to the traffic. Thankfully, no collisions ensured.

While browsing through shots from several years ago I stumbled onto this one. I never uploaded it because I really didn't like it that much. . .But looking at it in 2020, it just seemed to fit in that crazy year. . .Maybe when I took this shot, this old jalopy was trying to tell me something. . .
Have been browsing through a few images from a trip to Far North Queensland a while ago. Funny how I invariably dismiss all my images on first viewing but given a little time manage to find a few I can live with :)

CRYSTALS DECORE: Simply Shelby Summer Garden Crystal Set www.flickr.com/photos/simplyshelbysl/51161832557/in/datep...
These lovely roses were taken in our garden this summer 2024.
A rose is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. There are over 100 species. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing or trailing with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwest Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach 7 meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses.
The name rose comes from French, itself from Latin rosa, which was perhaps borrowed from Oscan, from Greek ρόδον rhódon (Aeolic βρόδον wródon), itself borrowed from Old Persian wrd- (wurdi), related to Avestan varəδa, Sogdian ward, Parthian wâr.
The leaves are borne alternately on the stem. In most species they are 5 to 15 centimetres (2.0 to 5.9 in) long, pinnate, with (3–) 5–9 (–13) leaflets and basal stipules; the leaflets usually have a serrated margin, and often a few small prickles on the underside of the stem. Most roses are deciduous but a few (particularly from South east Asia) are evergreen or nearly so.
The flowers of most species have five petals, with the exception of Rosa sericea, which usually has only four. Each petal is divided into two distinct lobes and is usually white or pink, though in a few species yellow or red. Beneath the petals are five sepals (or in the case of some Rosa sericea, four). These may be long enough to be visible when viewed from above and appear as green points alternating with the rounded petals. There are multiple superior ovaries that develop into achenes. Roses are insect-pollinated in nature.
The aggregate fruit of the rose is a berry-like structure called a rose hip. Many of the domestic cultivars do not produce hips, as the flowers are so tightly petalled that they do not provide access for pollination. The hips of most species are red, but a few (e.g. Rosa pimpinellifolia) have dark purple to black hips. Each hip comprises an outer fleshy layer, the hypanthium, which contains 5–160 "seeds" (technically dry single-seeded fruits called achenes) embedded in a matrix of fine, but stiff, hairs. Rose hips of some species, especially the Dog Rose (Rosa canina) and Rugosa Rose (Rosa rugosa), are very rich in vitamin C, among the richest sources of any plant. The hips are eaten by fruit-eating birds such as thrushes and waxwings, which then disperse the seeds in their droppings. Some birds, particularly finches, also eat the seeds.
Rose thorns are actually prickles - outgrowths of the epidermis. While the sharp objects along a rose stem are commonly called "thorns", they are technically prickles — outgrowths of the epidermis (the outer layer of tissue of the stem). (True thorns, as produced by e.g. Citrus or Pyracantha, are modified stems, which always originate at a node and which have nodes and internodes along the length of the thorn itself.) Rose prickles are typically sickle-shaped hooks, which aid the rose in hanging onto other vegetation when growing over it. Some species such as Rosa rugosa and Rosa pimpinellifolia have densely packed straight prickles, probably an adaptation to reduce browsing by animals, but also possibly an adaptation to trap wind-blown sand and so reduce erosion and protect their roots (both of these species grow naturally on coastal sand dunes). Despite the presence of prickles, roses are frequently browsed by deer. A few species of roses have only vestigial prickles that have no points.

Yearling white-tailed deer bucks are often called button bucks because they have little bumps, or buttons, on their heads. If you zoom in on this guy, you can see a slight swelling on each side of his head, situated right in front of his ears and topped with some orange hairs. Starting next spring, small antlers will start to grow out there. This hungry youngster was busy browsing on some of the tasty twigs and leaves on those nearby bushes. This woody browse is one of the favorite foods for white-tailed deer in the fall.

The wild water buffalo (Bubalus arnee), also called Asian buffalo, Asiatic buffalo and wild buffalo, is a large bovine native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It has been listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List since 1986, as the remaining population totals less than 3,400. A population decline of at least 50% over the last three generations (24–30 years) is projected to continue. 3,100 live in India, mostly in Assam. The wild water buffalo is the most likely ancestor of the domestic water buffalo.
The wild water buffalo occurs in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand, and Cambodia, with an unconfirmed population in Myanmar. It is associated with wet grasslands, swamps, flood plains and densely vegetated river valleys. Tigers, mugger crocodiles and Asian black bears feed on adult wild water buffaloes.
In India, it is largely restricted to in and around Kaziranga, Manas and Dibru-Saikhowa National Parks, Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary and Bura Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary and in a few scattered pockets in Assam.
Wild water buffaloes are both diurnal and nocturnal. They are probably grazers by preference, feeding mainly on graminoids when available. They also eat other herbs, fruits, and bark, as well as browsing on trees and shrubs. They also feed on crops, including rice, sugarcane, and jute, sometimes causing considerable damage. – Wikipedia

Giraffes favor eating the leaves and twigs of Acacia trees. This tree is armed with big, white, sharp thorns to protect its juicy leaves from attackers. Giraffes, however, are not deterred by these thorns and they use their long maneuverable tongues and tough lips to get around them.

Tip turkey, dumpster chook, rubbish raptor – the Australian white ibis goes by many unflattering names. But it is a true urban success story, scavenging to survive in cities across Australia as wetlands have been lost.
The Australian white ibis (Threskiornis molucca) is a wading bird of the ibis family, Threskiornithidae. It is widespread across much of Australia. It has a predominantly white plumage with a bare, black head, long downcurved bill, and black legs. While it is closely related to the African sacred ibis, the Australian white ibis is a native Australian bird. Contrary to urban myth, it is not a feral species introduced to Australia by people, and it does not come from Egypt.

At each Geyser Basin I'd stop at each geyser and stick around for a five or ten minutes, awaiting an eruption. I did get a few bubbles here and there, like with this one, and a couple of geysers actually spewed hot steam and water about 8-10 feet in the air. Of course, you can always rely upon "Old Faithful" to erupt every 90 minutes or so.
Still the "paint pots" and "thermal ponds" were colorful and vibrant.
I read and saw some video taken about a week or so ago in Biscuit Basin, where a "thermal explosion" sent rocks, debris, and scalding hot water about 20 feet in the air and destroyed some of the wooden boardwalks in the bargain. Wish I'd been there to photograph that geyser! But then again, I really don't want to threaten my life for the sake of my photography. At least the sky was beautiful on the day I went "browsing Biscuit Basin."
