Sunday was a great day for a paint job. The weather was warm and the music loud! Stayed there till it got dark. Had to go back today to take the picture :p
Boston stock broker and speculator Thomas W. Lawson´s yacht Independence, which participated in the 1901 America´s Cup trials, but failed to make it to the actual race, which eventually was won by the Columbia. Independence was considered the fastest boat, but it was considered to be too fragile. My colorization of a Detroit Publishing Co. image in the Library of Congress archive.

During the first two races on 6th and 8th July, Independence was completely outclassed. On July 11th, after some modifications, he finished third, 6 minutes 18 seconds behind Columbia and 2 mn 58 s behind Constitution, these results show a significant improvement of the boat. The next day, on July 12th, Independence achieves a remarkable performance. After losing her topmast near the start, he finished only 10 minutes 44 s behind Columbia and 8 min 25 sec behind Constitution.After a stay in dry dock in Bristol, Independence races against Columbia on August 1st, Constitution was being repaired. He loses the race for 5 min 14 s.For the last race of his short career, on August 3rd, Independence achieves another remarkable performance. Over a course of 30 miles, he finished only 1 minute 35 seconds behind his rival, also beating the record times for sailing in twenty miles.
"I did everything possible to secure a race or series of races for her with any or all the boats of her class then afloat, the Shamrock I. and Shamrock II, the Columbia and Constitution. I even offered to keep her in commission beyond the season of 1901 provided I was assured she would have an opportunity of racing against all or any of the above boats.""When I became convinced it would be impossible for her to secure another race, and that there was absolutely no reason for keeping her afloat, I gave orders that she be broken up."Independence was in commission exactly three months. Her sails were hoisted for the first time off Boston light June 3d, and on September 3d they were lowered for the last time, in the same locality. The Goshawk has to be one of my favourite birds of prey but it remains particularly elusive with only around 400 breeding pairs in the UK. Whilst numbers have increased the species remains the target of egg collectors and still subject to persecution on some managed estates. This is actually a rescued bird I was fortunate to observe and photograph on private woodland.
This man has seen a lot in his lifetime. Unbending will and fortitude allowed him to succeed in his business. They say about such people - hardened by life.

I spotted this old sign down some of the back streets of the City. Pater & Co have long since ceased trading.

The Rohingyas are a Muslim minority from the North Rakhine State in western Burma. Over the past forty years, the Burmese government has systematically stripped over 1 million Rohingya of their citizenship. Recognized as one of the most oppressed ethnic groups in the world, the Rohingya are granted few social, economic and civil rights. They are subjected to forced labor, arbitrary land seizure, religious persecution, extortion, the freedom to travel, and the right to marry. Because of the abuse they endure in Burma, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled Burma to seek sanctuary in neighboring Bangladesh. In the refugee camps along the south east coast where they settle, most are not recognized as refugees and are considered illegal economic migrants. Unwanted and unwelcome, they receive little or no humanitarian assistance and are vulnerable to exploitation and harassment. In recent years, the Rohingya have paid brokers to smuggle them by boat from Bangladesh to Malaysia and even beyond to Australia, sparking the attention of governments throughout the region.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has confirmed that the statelessness of the Rohingya is not just a Burma-related problem, but a problem with larger regional implications.

One of my favourite old storefronts seen on Davie Street back at the end of 2014. I found out that all the buildings on the North East corner at Burrard Street were all recently demolished as a huge new rental building will take their place. ABC lives on as they moved over to West Broadway a couple of years ago. Here's a Vancouver Archives link to see how the building looked back in 1978.
