Yeah!
The cast came off a week ago, and I have been going to physical therapy since.
I love being able to sleep at night without being woken up by the stupid cast or the uncomfortable "boot". You wouldn't think a cast would make much difference in your sleeping patterns but it did for me. I never want to wear a cast again, and I only had this last one on for four weeks!
Physical therapy isn't as horrible as so many people make it sound. It is a lot of work training long unused muscles to function correctly again.. . but it isn't THAT bad. After "exercising" I take an Advil and set a bag of frozen peas on my ankle. The muscles that hurt the most aren't even part of the ankle, but the shin muscles!
The P.T.s say I have great "ballet toes"/ dancer's feet. Apparently, my ankles & feet have an amazing range of motion. I can and always have been able to bend my foot straight down so that my toes point and line up as a perfect extension of my leg. I think it's kind of funny, but it's a nice compliment.
According to the PTs I also have the nicest feet they have seen (& smelled*) in quite some time. Most people with my injuries come in without even having washed their feet off, much less peeled off the scaly, dry skin left from their cast. GROSS! I peeled off at least half that lizard skin while I was still in the doctor's office after the cast was removed. I can't imagine leaving that stuff on for the poor PT to remove. Yuck! Many people are so afraid they are going to hurt their ankle that they won't even touch their foot or leg.
As of today, I am allowed to WALK while wearing the boot and only need to use the crutches when walking becomes uncomfortable or painful.
YEAH! -again.
( * I make sure to lather on vanilla scented lotion before putting on my sock & boot and heading out the door for my PT appointment.)
It's been almost a month since my break and over two weeks since my surgery. I had my stiches removed and they gave me this cool new walking boot. I can't walk in it yet, but the doctor says healing is going as good and as fast as it could.
My next appointment is in 5 weeks and I'm told I should be able to start putting weight on my ankle then. I'm really looking forward to that!

I'm looking forward to going into the orthopedist tomorrow to have them take this bandage off and maybe give me a time line to be back walking and ideally back skiing!
It’s a few days shy of being two months since I broke my ankle. I had another follow-up appointment today and the doctor had good news. The bone is healed, I can ditch the crutches and put full weight on my ankle! I’m not out of the woods yet, but it feels good to walk around (as best I can). My ligaments still need some time and my right leg muscles have atrophied. Tomorrow I begin physical therapy and I’m ready to do what it takes to be back skiing as soon as possible!

Wednesday, February 10, 2016- 41/366 (2963/3288)- It seems like this has been a physically tough year on my students, especially with athletic injuries. This wonderful young lady has a pretty severe injury from soccer that required surgery a month or so ago. She has been on those crutches every day and I have never heard her complain. Even after missing class she has stayed caught up with her photo assignments, which can't be easy for her.
Wish all my "walking wounded" were as tough as her.
Jims_Photos has been posting photos according to certain day tags. I keep thinking I will post one, but never have one ready for that certain day theme. Finally I have it...and it goes along with Halloween pretty well too. The x-ray I took a photo of from my last doctor visit. Here is my new hardware.
