In what has become a stupid tradition, every 500 photos, I upload something completely different in celebration of a pointless milestone, in this case, my 3000th upload. What we have here are 12 photos taken using the in-game camera you're given in Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA V). In a game famed for fast cars, gunfights and violence, it seems odd that I spend my free roam time taking photos of bridges and tunnels. Well, maybe it's not that odd, all things considered...

This is the Pont du Gard, a famous Roman Aqueduct on the Gardon River in France.

This monumental structure spanning the Gardon River valley is 275 metres long, 49 metres high, 6 metres wide at the base, 3 metres wide at the top and has a total of fifty three arches. It is only one part of a fifty kilometre aqueduct which supplied Roman Nimes with fresh water. It is estimated to have carried twenty thousand cubic metres per day.

It was built using six-ton stone blocks, coloured a delicate shade of pink, laid dry, and is a technological and aesthetic masterpiece.

Through poor maintenance, the aqueduct gradually became unusable in the 9th Century.

But the many times restored Pont du Gard, still remains its haughty air even after nearly two thousand years.

From a tourist book on La Provence (English version)

Begun around 19 BC, this bridge is part of an aqueduct which transported water from a spring near Uzes to Roman Nimes. An underground channel, bridges and tunnels were engineered to carry the 20 million litre (4.4 million gallon) daily water supply 50 km (31 miles).

The three-tiered structure of the Pont du Gard spans the Gardon valley and was the tallest aqueduct in the Roman empire.

Its huge limestone blocks, some as heavy as 6 tonnes, were erected without mortar. The water channel covered by stone slabs, was in the top tier of the three. Skillfully designed cutwaters ensured that the bridge has resisted many violent floods.

It is not known for certain how long the aqueduct continued in use but it may still have been functioning as late as the 9th century AD.

The adjacent road bridge was erected in the 1700s.

"Old Elbe Tunnel or St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel (German: Alter Elbtunnel (coll.) or St. Pauli Elbtunnel (official name)) which opened in 1911, is a pedestrian and vehicle tunnel in Hamburg, Germany. The 426 m (1,398 ft) long tunnel was a technical sensation; 24 m (80 ft) beneath the surface, two tubes with 6 m (20 ft) diameter connect central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards on the south side of the river Elbe. This meant a big improvement for tens of thousands of workers in one of the busiest harbors in the world.

Four huge lifts on either side of the tunnel carried pedestrians, carriages and motor vehicles to the bottom. They are still in operation, though due to the limited capacity by today's standards, other bridges and tunnels have been built and taken over most of the traffic.

In 2008 approx 300.000 cars, 63.000 bicycles and 700.000 pedestrians used the tunnel. The tunnel is opened 24 hours for pedestrians and bicycles."

A visit to this falls near the Swiss town of Lauterbrunnen is a very unique experience. The falls is actually a series of 10 falls in a narrow twisting gorge that has been cut into the rock wall of the Lauterbrunnen valley by glacial melt and the Swiss have built a series of catwalks, stairways, bridges and tunnels that let you explore this thundering cascade. A nasty rainy day. Nick took Megan out for her first ever cinema trip and the boy and I stayed in and played with trains. I built loops, bridges and tunnels, and Eli destroyed them. He did quite enjoy pushing the engine around the track but absolutely would not do so for the camera (he's much more interested in the camera). So I resorted to dirty tricks and filled the train carriage with raisins.

Sydney Gardens, Bath.

Minerva's Temple.

By Alfred J Taylor.

Grade ll listed.

A rectangular pavilion of limestone ashlar, built to promote Bath at the Festival of Empire Exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1911. Re-erected here 1913.

Sydney Gardens were laid out as commercial pleasure grounds between 1792 and 1794; the initial design was by the architect Thomas Baldwin, who, after he went bankrupt, was replaced by Charles Harcourt Masters in 1794. They were opened on 11 May 1795 as Sydney Gardens Vauxhall, and rapidly became a popular place of entertainment, hosting public breakfasts, promenades and galas. The main building was the Sydney Tavern, which stood at the western end of the central walk, and housed tea and card rooms, a ballroom, coffee room and a public house. In 1799, a section of the Kennet & Avon Canal was cut through the gardens, with the addition of decorative bridges and tunnels, which added to the picturesque appeal of the pleasure grounds; these were insisted upon by the proprietors of Sydney Gardens as part of their agreement with the canal company, which was entered into in 1795. The canal company paid £2,100 and the cost of providing the bridges and tunnels as compensation for the intrusion into the gardens. During the early C19, additional features and structures were introduced, adding variety and surprise in accordance with landscape design principles of the period. From c1839, a section of the Great Western Railway was constructed, cutting through the gardens. Later in the C19, further ornamental structures were introduced, but these were largely cleared away after World War Two. In 1891, when the original 99-year lease of the Gardens expired, the entire site, including the Tavern, by then in use as a college, was sold, with the intention of replacing the former Tavern with a large hotel, and remodelling the grounds. The plan was abandoned and in 1908, the site was purchased by Bath City Council; the gardens were opened to the public as a municipal park in 1913, while the Tavern was remodelled by Sir Reginald Blomfield into the Holburne of Menstrie Museum. The gardens remain in use as a public park.

Every year there is a covered bridge festival in Ashtabula County during one weekend in October. There is usually a food or craft vendor at each bridge and lots of people especially if it is a nice fall day. There are many clubs that take the tour together. I have seen Corvette, Mustang, Mini Cooper, PT Cruisers, Harley-Davidson, antique car and MG clubs to name a few. It is great fun to drive around in the country on a nice day meeting all kinds of people. As you can see, people park along the side of the road and walk through the bridges or just walk around enjoying each others company. Here is a link for descriptions of all the bridges (17 in Ashtabula County). www.coveredbridgefestival.org/bridges.htm

I have photos that I have taken of all the bridges in my Bridges and Tunnels set.

New York City- Joint Task Force Empire Shield (JTF-ES) Corporal Saul Revatta, 42nd Infantry Division, New York Army National Guard, assigned to Delta Company JTF- ES, during a recent patrol at the Queens Midtown Tunnel.

JTF -ES is the state’s standing military organization that plans and prepares for defense support to civil authority missions throughout the New York City area and is jointly staffed with Army and Air National Guard personnel along with members of the New York Naval Militia and New York Guard.

The service members on JTF-ES augment the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Police at Penn Station, Grand Central Station in New York City and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department (PAPD) at John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia Airports, the New State Police and the Tunnel Bridge and Toll Authority (TBTA) at the various bridges and tunnels in the New York City area. The American Locomotive Company (ALCO) built this custom made, model MRS-1 military road switcher. It is a multi-gauge locomotive, designed at the height of the Cold War for use in any future land war. It can operate on standard gauge (4’ 8.5” used in N. America, most of Europe. Turkey, Korea, China and parts of Australia) and broad gauge track (5’ in Russia and Panama, 5’ 3” in Ireland and parts of Australia, or 5’ 6” in Spain, Portugal, parts of India and Pakistan). Its wheel assemblies (trucks) have wide side frames and the wheels can be moved on the axles.

It has both air and vacuum brakes and can be equipped with different kinds of couplers, using the various mounting holes on its ends. ALCO built 83 units and EMD built an additional thirteen. It has a turbocharged, four-cycle, V-12 diesel engine producing 1,600 HP. It weighs 246,000 lbs., has 40 wheels, all powered (C-C classification), and a top speed of 65 mph. Its design is also compact, to fit the limited bridge and tunnel clearances on foreign railways. It is 56’ 9.24” long. 9’ 6.75” wide, and 13’ 5” high (compare it to the ALCO RS-1 on exhibit).

The "B in its number shows it has a steam generator (boiler) in its short hood, used to heat passenger trains. This can evaporate 330 gallons of water per hour. It carries 800 gallons of fuel and another 800 gallons of water for train heating. It was last used at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Virginia. It was obtained in 1993 through the surplus government property system.
