Mersey Gateway six lane Cable Stayed toll bridge under construction across the River Mersey between Widnes and Runcorn

In September 2017, contractor crews closed the southbound I-5 to SR 7 ramp for construction. During the closure, crews will build permanent retention ponds, install drainage and electrical components, and rebuild the ramp to match the new alignment of I-5. This closure also gives crews workzone access to begin drilling the shafts for Pier 2 on the new McKinley Street overpass. This is the final long-term ramp closure for this particular project, and it will be in place through fall of 2017. More project details can be found here: www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/I5/MStToPortland/

Pitteadie Castle lies roughly between Kirkcaldy and Kinghorn although it cannot be seen from the B9157. The entrance to Pitteadie House is private and the castle is not accessible to the public.

It is, however, possible to gain excellent views of the castle by taking to the minor roads which criss-cross the hills behind.

We have met Tarslag before but in adverts from their Midlands base in Wolverhampton and indeed they were eventually to be taken over by another Wolverhampton concern Tarmac. This advert is for their Stockton branch and as can be seen they manufactured and built concrete and associated structures. Probably most of interest are the 'Orlit' houses. Orlit was one of the various 'prefabricated' type of housing structures that were produced in the post-war period in an effort to help solve the UK's appalling housing crisis at the time - a mixture of pre-existing slum housing and losses due to wartime bombing. The hope was that pre-fabricated construction would be quicker and cheaper. Orlit houses were designed by a Czech emigre architect Erwin Catona and utilised pre-cast concrete panels bolted together to form the structure. It appears around 8,500 Orlits were built mostly in Scotland (by the Orlit Company) with, as the advert shows, the rest being mostly in N E England. They apparently were intended to have a design life of 60 years although some survive - most have been demolished due to structural failure of the joints that were prone to corrosion.

During the overnight hours of Friday, June 28, Atkinson Construction crews set three new bridge girders on a new I-5 overpass being built at Thorne Lane in Lakewood. The girders each 160 feet in length. This photo shows that installing girders of this size is a carefully choreographed operation.

To the right here in this photograph is the end of the estuary of the Grand Codroy river in Western Newfoundland. To the left, is the Atlantic Ocean. A bridge used to connect one side of the river with the other, but it was removed because it had deteriorated. There was some buzz that the government wasn`t going to replace it ... which would have been a big inconvenience for the people living in the area, not to mention for tourists that visit the area. This estuary is perhaps the most productive of the few estuaries we have on the island and is the province's most important wetland. It is also received a designation of a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention on May 27, 1987. Anyway, whatever happened ... political pressure, common sense, etc ... it is now being replaced with a new bridge. These shots were taken with my KAP rig.

As an added note, about midway along that narrow neck of land is where I photographed the Great Blue Herons two years ago.

Low risk construction activity is resuming on the project that builds a new southbound I-5 Puyallup River Bridge in Tacoma. Crews are installing bridge overhangs and form work.

Contractor crews building a new overpass at the I-5 and Berkeley Street interchange are also constructing new on- and off-ramps at the interchange. This crew is working on what will be the pier that supports the southbound I-5 exit to the new Berkeley Street overpass.

Between July 15 and 17, workers demolished and replaced two entire bridges. So far, they have replaced 9 out of the 14 bridges in the project-- all ahead of schedule. This wokr would typically take at least 4 years, but workers are using innovation to complete the much-needed project in a matter of months.
