RIP Brian Wilson

20th June 1942 - 11th June 2025

Bondi Surf Beach, Sydney.

Here are the one and only 'The Beach Boys':

Bondi Beach was photographed by me from Notts Avenue, near the Bondi Icebergs Club, last October - 2024.

This is similar to two previously posted images of Bondi Beach. but this one is different and not seen before. This is for Brian Wilson - one of the stars of my upbringing and listening to the radio. Cheers from Sydney.

My Canon EOS 5D Mk IV with the Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens.

Processed in Adobe Lightroom.

Clear moonless nights haven't been many this year but it's alway worth waiting especially when it's a dark sky area with minimal light pollution.

Comet Neowise again, the ionized tail extending out of frame.

Morning light at Blacksod Lighthouse, Co. Mayo.

A scene from the west of Ireland on a chilly Winter afternoon.

A lone Hawthorn tree surrounded by ridges on the land which are what remains of a potato planting method called "lazy beds". An unfortunate term of phrase, non reflective of the back breaking labour involved in creating the growing beds for potatoes.

The west of Ireland is scarred with these "lazy beds", reminders of the hard times which our ancestors endured, trying to live off the land.

Keep on repeat (watch out for that train)

But with these lyrics :

"I know so many people

Who think they can do it alone

They isolate their heads

And stay in their safety Zone...

Now what can you tell them

And what can you say

That won't make them defensive

I know there's an answer

I know but I have to find it

By Myself "

One photo. Image, textures and digital painting by me, Tom.

Thanks for your kindness, comments, faves and invites.

Don't make me stay in my safety Zone...

So I’m lying here, just staring at the celing tiles.

There were two schools of musical philosophy that developed around the 1963 Chevrolet Impala. The cult of Dinah Shore said the car should be used, cruising the highways and byways of the United States.

The cult of Brian Wilson said the Impala was best enjoyed in short, furious, contests, making the most of the powerful 409 cubic inches of V-8 power under the hood.

This is a forced perspective photograph of a 1/24 scale die-cast model car in front of a real background.

It's not to often that the Milky Way is visible all the way to the horizon in Ireland. ISO 6400 with some heavy noise reduction and a second shot for the foreground. Worth waiting for.

The Beach Boys were one of my parents favourite American bands when I was growing up in the sixties - my personal favourite genre of music is rock and my go to favourite band is Led Zeppelin... but for my parents....

Best summer weather in Ireland for a long time, Eagle Island off the coast of Co. Mayo. While we don't actually get the Midnight sun, at this time of year we get this sunset glow that lasts all night. This is 3minutes and 20 seconds combined multiple exposure 20x10 second shots, averaged in-camera.

From my trip to the Dolomites last Spring, Chiesetta di San Giovanni in Ranui.

A beautiful place in Val di Funes! The mountain peaks in the background, part of the Odle Group, and are some 4km from the church. I was hoping for some dramatic sunset light on the peaks but it wasn't to be on the evening I visited.

May 10th 2024, Northern Lights decended to low latitudes, over Ireland the sky erupted with colour seldom seen. In 12 years of documenting aurora from Co. Mayo, I never thought I would witness Aurora on my southern horizon. The night was calm and still, the sky danced with light for hours flickering and pulsing into the early dawn light, an amazing sight to behold.

The 33.3 Art Show is a super cool collection of super cool artists reinterpreting super cool album covers! In short: it's super cool.

In the heart of Huntington Beach is a museum dedicated to the history of surfing and its greatest legends. The mural painted on the west wall is beautiful—the woody is often parked outside to add to the flavor. Check out their website and if you’re in the area, it’s a must see.

Al Jardine, co founder of the Beach Boys, playing with Brian Wilson on Saturday night at the Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas.

A bittersweet concert. Brian Wilson was the genius who along with the Beatles broke so many boundaries around the definition of 'popular' music, and what could (or could not) be done in a recording studio. Good Vibrations remains up there with my all time favorite songs, while God Only Knows is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and predictably left me with a few tears running down my cheek that night. The band were beyond fantastic, as the songs swung from popular pop to complex, challenging, etherial harmonies and tempos. But Wilson himself was clearly struggling. Whether his demons are now physical or mental, it was hard to see such a once bright, creative light look so pale. Nonetheless, the beauty and genius of the songs lived on, and it was an absolute privilege to watch the master share in their performance.

Another go at imaging the Andromeda Galaxy with my Pentax K-1 with 67 200mm in crop mode. Stacked in Deep Sky Stacker and edited in Lightroom and PS Elements. 8 x 60second exposures @F/4 ISO 3200. By stacking multiple images, you simulate a long exposure

This is my not-too-shabby and far from perfect first pressing copy. Totally love how this was released on the eve of my first birthday…

Vinyl records, which we used to call small records. Originally singles, because there was one song on each side. 45RPM, 45 rounds per minute. From my collection ...

Bass anyone? Guitar or perhaps a ukulele? Keyboards were off to the side, fiddles or, if you prefer, violins were in the other room along with guns, lots of power tools, jewelry, videos, etc. I was in a pawnshop and walked out after buying a fiddle for my youngest son. It was a birthday present purchased a month late.

The Milky Way in January from the west of Ireland, Stargazing Live from my front door! This is a single 20 second exposure 18mm, F3.5 @ ISO 6400. The brightest part of our milky way is well below the horizon during the winter months. This is a view to the northwest, hoping to get some shots of Milky Way with the Northern lights in the coming weeks, that is if the skies stay clear!

We're Here - Music from the Decades

It still gives me goose bumps, nearly 50 years later. And that chord – you know the one – it just hangs there in the air and rings. Brilliant. Might not be your cup of tea, but I’ll always love the Beach Boys.

Good Vibrations

This will also go into Sliders Sunday, because none of it is real. I shot myself standing still, then added the shake weights, the motion, and the gym background with the vibration machine (which had a tall skinny blonde model using it).

Today we at We're Here are visiting the Music Inspiration group.

Taken from the TV as I played the recording of the Beach Boys at Glastonbury in 2005 which was screened a few days ago.

It's the man with the stars in his eyes! Sorry, another sky shot with me! Beautiful clear nights don't come that often in North Mayo so have to make the most of them! I would love to have the silhouette of a nice tree but they all blew away on the night of the big wind!!!! This is a single 20 second exposure 18mm, F3.5 @ ISO 6400. The brightest part of our milky way is well below the horizon during the winter months. Also in this image is the Andromeda Galaxy, M31. It is the only Galaxy, other than our own Milky Way, visible with the naked eye. It is 2.5 million light years from Earth

About to win the NL West.
