This reminds me of the 'astronaut' aspect of early 70's Japanese designs such as Orbitel, Videosphere, Welltron, etc: white body with a frosted black door (in the DH-280, that's where you swap out the Casio ROM pack).

The DH-280 had separate controls for ROM output volume and main volume (both ROM and horn melody). It also had a horn voice tuning pot.

Since I'm not using the ROM anymore, nor does the DH-100 board now within allow for tuning, I have here two external controls I could use to modify the horn sound in other ways: VCF cutoff? mix in a subosc?

Some detail on the voice buttons. identical functions to the DH-100,200,800 in that you have count button presses to pick the tone and transpose the key.

By the way, the portamento key was the first one I molded, so it's the least good molding job.

I set my Nikon D90 up on a tripod and filmed myself tinkering around with the Akai EWI 4000s being run through a Yamaha VL70m. The lighting is bad and it's rather out of focus since i was filming myself, but you can still hear it. This is not a "song", just an experiment...

The DH-280 shares the side drain concept with the top-of-the-line DH500.

When I replaced the voice circuitry in the DH-280 with that from an old DH-100, I had to also bring the breath sensor from the old DH-100. I think the diaphragm coils had different impedances between models.

A nice view of this very odd and wonderful design.

E' solo il meglio di te che mi manca.

Now that the keys are white, they're still visible but overall a more consistent look than the teal ones.

Here you can see the illuminated green power LED for the M-audio wireless MIDI board I installed. Was fairly straightforward, as the board can run off batteries, but also has a 9V dc power jack. I connected the switched battery 7.5V from the DH-280 to the 9V input on the wireless board. I also connected the MIDI out of the newly-transplanted DH-100 board to the MIDI input of the wireless board. When I turn on the DH-280, it auto-finds the companion M-audio receiver, plugged into a MIDI synth across the room.

Kriminal suit + skeleton rubber mask; the mask has eyes and mouth holes to breath through. But they are small, and the spandex hood beneath it is double-layered and very thick!

Side view showing the illumed DH-280's red power LED and the wireless MIDI board's green LED.

Detail on the keys. My molding didn't get such a glossy finish on the main keys, but that's OK with me.

More native controls. Don't plan on ever using the DC power jack. Might re-purpose the Melody switch for a vibrato ON-OFF control, or perhaps turn off the internal wireless MIDI board to save battery power...

The ROM melodies and blip rhythms used to be generated by pressing rubber membrane buttons that protruded from these slots. When I swapped the circuitry, I removed those, too, and just placed white plastic where the PCB used to be.

You can kind of hear the speaker through here now. I've toyed with placing an array of square LED's here, but that'd be a lot of work...

Most of the circuitry and the speaker are in the lower portion of the horn, thus the need for the flaring of the shape.

DH-280 labeling, plus port for ROM tuning (there was a PCB-mounted potentiometer for that, no longer an option since the native DH-280 circuitry was removed).
