The 'Pearl of the Adriatic', on the Dalmatian coast, was an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. The prosperity of the city of Dubrovnik was historically based on maritime trade. As the capital of the Republic of Ragusa, a maritime republic, the city achieved a high level of development, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries. Dubrovnik became notable for its wealth and skilled diplomacy. The beginning of tourism in Dubrovnik is associated with the construction of the Imperial Hotel in Dubrovnik in 1897. According to CNNGo, Dubrovnik is among the 10 best preserved medieval walled cities in the world. Although Dubrovnik was demilitarised in the 1970s to protect it from war, in 1991, after the breakup of Yugoslavia, it was besieged by the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) for seven months and received significant shelling damage. In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

December 25, 2008 was by far the most difficult and painful day of my life. I have been through countless romantic breakups, including a divorce, but somehow losing Mom just blows the rest off the charts.
The morning after her death was appropriately foggy and eerie, like my mood. I walked outside, in a fog myself, and took this shot looking down my street.
My mother had suffered with emphysema for years. Only recently had she gone on oxygen, and it seemed all downhill after that. COPD/emphysema is a horrible way to die. I watched her gasping for breath and crying out for God to help her. It was the most helpless I've ever felt, knowing that no one could do anything more than sedate her to keep her out of misery.
During the last two days of her life, they increased her morphine doses ten times. I think it hit me the hardest when I realized she would never come to again, and that I'd already had my last conversation with her- that I'd never hear her voice again. At that moment, I would've given anything just to hear her yell at me for something! My heart just sank. The night before Christmas Eve, Mom went into respiratory failure. I watched as she shook and gasped for breath like a drowning person, eyes wide open, but unable to respond. She suffered for over an hour like that, and I have no doubt that she felt as though she was suffocating. It was horrible, and there was nothing I could do. The next day, they'd increased her meds so much that she could no longer cough, or breathe deeply, or talk, or move. She was completely sedated, and that meant that pneumonia set in with a fever, and hastened the end of her life. It was a trade off for her comfort.
If you smoke, STOP. Stop NOW. Mom tried repeatedly through the years, but couldn't muster up the nerve until after my brother's first child was due. She wanted to set a good example. She quit after 53 years of smoking, but though she'd spared herself lung cancer, and though she probably did gain a couple of years of life by doing so, the quality of her life was dramatically reduced, and she suffered so much in the end that had she known her fate in advance, I believe she would've moved heaven and earth to alter it. Please, for the sake of those who love you as well as yourself, if you smoke, just stop. I can tell you from having watched this, that what Mom went through in withdrawal was nothing compared to what she went through in suffering at the end. It's worth it, and you owe it to those who love you to stop.
Happy New Year, and God bless, Chris

My photograph 'Goodbye my lover' was used as album art for a song cover of Jeff Buckley's 'Last Goodbye' by musician Patrick Thomas!
Patrick is an extraordinarily talented musician & I'm beyond honored that he asked me to contribute art. I had never heard 'Last Goodbye' before & was completely astonished with how it perfectly represented the emotions I felt when I took that photograph.
To listen to Patrick's cover of 'Last Goodbye',click here.
I truly feel that forms of art can play off of each other to create an unbelievably powerful emotional experience.
This is one of them.
I send a warm thank you to Patrick Thomas for his compassion & gratitude!

I went back to Bear Lake again today to photograph the spring ice breakup with a group from our camera club. The overcast sky opened up just long enough for a few good shots.
It didn't come as a whisper,
it came as thunder.
It exploded in my throat
like glass from within.
I held it back so much
that I learned to smile with broken teeth,
to dress my rage
in Sunday best.
But today,
let it go.
I opened the doors for it,
I released it like a fasting wolf,
like a blade laughing in flight.
And what a relief,
seeing the world tremble to the beat of my fury!
What a delight
to break what was never mine!
My hands trembled,
not with fear,
but with joy:
the cruel music of relief
is the most sincere I've ever played.
Now I understand volcanoes.
They are not born to be silent.

Europe - Croatia - Hrvatska - Dubrovnik - UNESCO World Heritage Site - Pearl of the Adriatic - Historical Mediterranean city on Adriatic Sea coast in extreme south of Croatia
The 'Pearl of the Adriatic', situated on the Dalmatian coast, became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains.
It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations on the Adriatic, a seaport and the centre of Dubrovnik-Neretva county. Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The prosperity of the city of Dubrovnik has always been based on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages, as the Republic of Ragusa, also known as a Maritime Republic (together with Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa, Venice and other Italian cities), it became the only eastern Adriatic city-state to rival Venice. Supported by its wealth and skilled diplomacy, the city achieved a high level of development, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries. Although demilitarised in the 1970s with the intent of forever protecting it from war devastation, in 1991, after the breakup of Yugoslavia, it was besieged by Serb-Montenegrin forces for 7 months and received significant damage from being shelled.

In three short months "breakup" will be nearing it's end - rivers, lakes, and streams will once again be flowing - bears will be roaming the land in search of fresh greens and ground squirrels - and I shall be out looking for all of the lovely signs of spring. I shall also be sitting upon this rock looking out on beautiful Kluane Lake, (if the bears let me.) In the past I have found some very large bear tracks along the shore surrounding "my" rock.
Excerpt from Wikipedia:
All Serbian Saints Serbian Orthodox Church is a Serbian Orthodox cathedral located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. It is dedicated to all the Serbian saints.
The construction of the church began in February 1983 with the purchase of the property which previous to that was a school property. The main architect of the project was the eminent architect from Belgrade Predrag "Peđa" Ristić [sr].
The foundation stone was blessed and laid by the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church Pavle during his visit to Canada on June 14, 1994. The foundations of the new church were blessed by the Bishop of Canada Georgije (Đokić) on November 26, 1995.
Due to the beginning of the breakup of Yugoslavia, the construction of the church was halted and was continued in 1999. The construction was completed in the spring of 2002.
The church is built in the Byzantine style, traditional for Orthodox churches. It has three rows for choirs and a hand-made iconostasis. The main part of the church is a squared cross with only one cupola above the central part of the church. The altar was painted by the iconographer Dragomir "Dragan" Marunić.
The church was blessed on June 15, 2002 with the presence of Bishop of Canada Georgije, Metropolitan of Zagreb and Ljubljana Jovan (Pavlović), Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral Amfilohije (Radović), Bishop of New Gračanica Longin (Krčo), Bishop of Britain and Scandinavia Dositej (Motika), Bishop of Central Europe Konstantin (Đokić), Bishop of Braničevo Ignatije (Midić), Bishop of Zahumlje and Herzegovina Grigorije (Durić), Greek Metropolitan Sotirios (Athanassoulas), Ukrainian Bishop Seraphim, the head of the Karađorđević dynasty Crown Prince Alexander and his spouse Crown Princess Katherine.
Bow Lake and Crowfoot Mountain
Icefields Parkway
Banff National Park, Alberta
When I first drove Icefields Parkway it was raining, socked in with clouds, and Bow Lake was frozen. Within a couple of weeks, the icy grip on the lake slowly broke up and the clouds parted giving a glimpse of the iconic beauty this drive is known for.
The cirque snowfield on the left side of the frame is Crowfoot Glacier, while Crowfoot Mountain (10,023 ft, 3,055 m) spans across the rest of the frame above Bow Lake.
Can't hid the hell I live in every day
You say its just a phase, I'll be okay
What you can't feel, must not be real…
I wear my heart here on my sleeve
But you can't see, no one sees…
This is killing me
I can barely breathe
No one knows what is inside of me
Too late to fit in, don't you dare pretend, You know what it's like, to watch the world outside
While you're buried alive…

Have a great sliders sunday!
A warm January morning at Sherdian Park in Cudahy, WI. Some of the ice has broken up and washer onto shore. With the warm weather, a lot of thawing was occurring. The path down to the lake was full of ice making it very difficult to navigate. In fact, I slipped and fell while exploring the shoreline for a composition. I ended up hurting my left thigh and ankle pretty good. Nothing was broken but I was limping for 2-3 days afterwards.
Please, come follow me:

"Why should i listen to my heart ?
Because you will never be able to keep it quite.Even if you pretend not to have heard what it tells you, it will always be there inside you, repeating to you what you are thinking about life and about the world.
What happened that evening was the call of my heart and i have no regrets on that call. I followed the call of my heart and you decided what your heart was saying.
I forgive you because I love you and you do not love me.

Ice floats away as the river rises, changing of the seasons.
East Fork of the Chippewa

The sunrise was a real damp squib, but around an hour later, the blanket of cloud started to breakup, and some lovely light came streaming through onto Beda Fell and the Martindale Valley.
For my first Macro Monday! Maybe cheesy, but I wanted something other than a straight shot of writing implements.
What I learned today: I should probably use a tripod for macros next time.
Shot with medium-length macro tube.
