I wanted to try and create this idea of a murder scene from the view of the killer. Still not really sure if that comes across without me saying so - working on the idea anyway!

NASA's Centennial Challenges Previews Transportation Track for Break the Ice Challenge by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center

NASA's Centennial Challenges team is collaborating with Alabama A&M University to host the final competition for the Break the Ice Lunar Challenge (BTIL) this summer.

The Break the Ice Lunar Challenge opened in 2020 to find novel solutions for excavating icy lunar regolith and delivering acquired resources in extreme environmental conditions. In alignment with NASA’s Moon to Mars objectives, the challenge aims to develop technologies that could support a sustained human presence on the Moon.

Throughout the challenge, competitors have designed, built, and independently tested robots that could theoretically withstand the harsh environments inside permanently shadowed regions of the lunar South Pole. The final competitions will take place live and open to the public on June 11-12, 2024 at Alabama A&M University's Agribition Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

The Centennial Challenges team is using terrestrial tools to simulate lunar conditions to provide an accurate proving ground for their lunar robots. For the two-fold competition, the finalists' rovers will dig up lunar icy regolith simulant from concrete pads inside the Agribition Center's arena. Shown in the video here, the finalists' rovers will traverse a 300-meter track that has been outfitted to contain bumps, obstacles, and rocky terrain, meant to mimic the environmental conditions on the lunar surface.

This may be a stretch, but I'm using this for the ANSH #18 - Living dangerously. Whacking away at block of ice with a chain saw in below freezing temperatures would clearly not be a safe thing for me to do!

California Teams Win $1.5 Million in NASA’s Break the Ice Lunar Challenge by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center

After two days of live competitions, two teams from southern California are heading home with a combined $1.5 million from NASA’s Break the Ice Lunar Challenge.

Since 2020, competitors from around the world have competed in this challenge with the common goal of inventing robots that can excavate and transport the icy regolith on the Moon. The lunar South Pole is the targeted landing site for crewed Artemis missions, so utilizing all resources in that area, including the ice within the dusty regolith inside the permanently shadowed regions, is vital for the success of a sustained human lunar presence.

In this image, the husband-and-wife duo of Terra Engineering, Valerie and Todd Mendenhall, receive the $1 million prize Wednesday, June 12, for winning the final phase of NASA’s Break the Ice Lunar Challenge at Alabama A&M’s Agribition Center in Huntsville, Alabama. With the Terra Engineering team at the awards ceremony are from left Daniel K. Wims, Alabama A&M University president; Joseph Pelfrey, NASA Marshall Space Flight center director; NASA’s Break the Ice Challenge Manager Naveen Vetcha; and Majed El-Dweik, Alabama A&M University’s vice president of research & economic development.
