Ipanema is a neighborhood located on the southern region of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between Leblon and Arpoador. The beach at Ipanema became widely known by the song "The Girl from Ipanema" ("Garota de Ipanema"), written by Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Most of the land that Ipanema consists of today once belonged to José Antonio Moreira Filho, Baron of Ipanema. The word "Ipanema" comes from the old Tupi language, meaning "bad water". In this case, it means bad for fishing, since the waves die too close to the sand, pushing fish away.

Ipanema gained fame with the start of the bossa nova sound, when its residents Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes created their ode to their neighborhood, "Girl from Ipanema." The song was written in 1962, with music by Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by de Moraes with English lyrics written later by Norman Gimbel.

Ipanema is adjacent to Copacabana beach, but it is distinct from its neighbor. It is relatively easy to navigate because the streets are aligned in a grid. Private infrastructure has created world-class restaurants, shops, and cafes. Ipanema is one of the most expensive places to live in Rio. At the forefront of the beach culture are the many surfers and sun worshippers who socialize daily at the beach. Every Sunday, the roadway closest to the beach is closed to motor vehicles and local residents and tourists use the opportunity to ride bikes, roller skate, skateboard, and walk along the ocean.

Ipanema has played its own role in Rio's culture since its beginning. It has universities, art galleries, theaters and cafes.

Ipanema holds its own street parade during Carnival festivities, separate from Rio de Janeiro's. Banda de Ipanema attracts up to 15,000 people to the streets of Ipanema for Carnival.

It is famously known for its elegance and social qualities. Two mountains called the "Dois Irmãos" (Two Brothers) rise at the western end of the beach. The beach is divided into segments by marks known as "postos" (lifeguard towers). Beer is sold everywhere on the beach along with the traditional cachaça. There are always circles of people playing football, volleyball, and footvolley, a combination sport of volleyball and football originated in Brazil.

In the winter the surf can reach 9 feet. The water quality varies with days of light-blue water to a more murky green after heavy rains. Constant swells keep the water clean. The often treacherous beach break regularly forms barrels.

One interesting thing about Ipanema's beach is that there is an area called "the gay beach," situated near Rua Farme de Amoedo; which is well-known for being a gay-friendly area, with the rainbow flag floating in the air.

Just west of this colorful section and towards Leblon is another popular stretch of sand known as Posto Nove (aptly named after the 9th lifeguard tower) where young and often beautiful carioca men and women hipsters congregate.

The Travel Channel listed Ipanema Beach as the sexiest beach in the world.

The sun leans gently into the horizon, painting the dunes in liquid gold. A woman stands still, rooted like an ancient tree, yet light as wind. Her silhouette dances with the fading light, a quiet hymn to the setting day. The sand cradles her steps, tracing stories soon to be swept away by the whispers of the evening breeze.

In this fleeting moment, time dissolves. The mountains bow in the distance, and the sky hums softly, wrapping the earth in warmth. The delicate lace that adorns her moves like petals in the air – fragile, yet woven with strength. She stands not against nature, but with it, becoming a thread in the vast, eternal fabric of land and sky.

This is not merely sunset; it is a symphony of stillness. In the heart of Florianópolis, where the dunes stretch like ocean waves, the ordinary melts into the extraordinary. The dance of shadow and light leaves behind an unspoken truth – that beauty exists in the quiet, the pause, the breath between one step and the next.

You really don't want to know what vajazzling is. Google it if you must, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Leblon (named after a French plantation owner, Le Blond, who owned this area) is an affluent neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, just west of Ipanema, another neighborhood in that city. In the north it is bordered by Gávea, and in the west by a towering hill called "Dois Irmãos", which translates as "two brothers", because of its split peak.

It's very much like Ipanema but even more exclusive, being the home of very rich, affluent and famous people. The beach is a bit more quiet and relaxed than the hip and trendy beach of Ipanema. Sometimes, although, it is not recommended for bath by the authorities, especially after rainy days.

The neighborhood has the highest land prices of Brazil and Latin America. Consequently, the many beautiful houses in the neighborhood were torn down to make way for high-rise apartments. Very few houses remain in Leblon. Most of Leblon's charm was destroyed with the destruction of its houses, which also occurred in Ipanema and Copacabana.

Sugarloaf Mountain (in Portuguese, Pão de Açúcar), is a peak situated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from the mouth of Guanabara Bay on a peninsula that sticks out into the Atlantic Ocean. Rising 396 metres (1,299 ft) above boats that come into the harbor, its name is said to refer to its resemblance to the traditional shape of concentrated refined loaf sugar. However, it is believed by some that the name actually derives from Pau-nh-acuqua (“high hill”) in the Tupi-Guarani language, as used by the indigenous Tamoios.

The mountain is only one of several monolithic morros of granite and quartz that rise straight from the water's edge around Rio de Janeiro. A glass-paneled cable car (in popular Portuguese, bondinho - more properly called teleférico), capable of holding 75 passengers, runs along a 1400-meter route between the peaks of Pão de Açúcar and Cara de Cão every 20 minutes. The original cable car line was built in 1912 and rebuilt around 1972/1973 in its current form. The cable car goes from the base, not the peak of the Babilônia mountain, to the Urca mountain and then to the Pão de Açúcar mountain.
