Bougainvillea is a creeper native to South America, of the nictaginaceae family. It has small flowers and included, in groups of three, in white, pink, red, purple, orange, yellow or white showy bracts (modified leaves).
Its name originated from the French navigator Louis Antoine de Bougainville who discovered the species in Brazil and took it to Europe around 1790. From there, the species spread throughout the world.

O bairro, antes residencial, guarda pouco do seu passado, casas como essa foram quase todas substituídas por altos prédios.
Alguns detalhes a observar: as janelas abriam-se generosamente para a rua onde os moradores podiam tomar ar fresco e comprimentar um ou outro amigo que passasse. Nas paredes vemos belos azulejos na sua decoração.

"This neighborhood emerged around the 18th century, belonging to the lands of the Casa Forte sugar mill. At first, it was a simple village amidst large sugar cane plantations. However, from 1746 onwards, this profile began to change. At that time, a major cholera epidemic took over Recife and some doctors announced that bathing in the stretch of the Capibaribe River that ran through the village during the summer was a miraculous remedy for the disease. The news spread very quickly and caused this region to become a popular destination for the wealthy of Recife, who soon built large summer houses there."
