After the big gale in the UK called Storm Eunice this unexpected visitor arrived the following day on one of my two local lakes I live next to in Welwyn Garden City and was a great surprize and find, It spent a few weeks hanging around with the local flocks of Canadian Geese before flying away. Generally rather shy and unapproachable. Not nearly so widespread as Canada Geese. Found in the UK from autumn and usually until the late spring.

Cackling Geese are much smaller than the Lesser Canada Goose which is common here. They have a shorter neck and a stubby bill. The plumage and markings are virtually identical.

They were once grouped with Canada Geese, but have been considered a separate species since 2004 as a result of new genetic information.

Dark-bellied Pale-bellied Black Brant and the Grey-bellied Brant are the four forms of Brent Goose. All four of the Brent forms have been recorded in Britain and Ireland, but the temptation is to assume that all birds in a grazing flock are the same. Given that stray individuals or family groups of one form may still wander and turn up within flocks of another.

There is a good guide to Brent Geese at www.birdguides.com

The Cackling Goose looks like a miniature version of the widespread Canada Goose, with which it was once combined as a single species. The two are almost identical in plumage, but Cackling Geese are more delicate, with stubbier bills, steeper foreheads, shorter necks (strikingly apparent in flying birds), and usually more rounded heads. (Cornell Lab of Ornithology).

This Goose was not much larger than the Mallards in the area.

The rising generation of Canada Goose first time observed in summer 2020

There are a lot of these on Beaumaris Lake at this time.

I added information from a copilot search and Wikipedia to explain the difference between Cackling Geese and Canada Geese

Size: Cackling Geese are generally smaller and more compact than Canada Geese, with some being barely larger than a Mallard.

Physical Characteristics: Cackling Geese have stubbier bills, shorter necks, and more rounded heads compared to the longer neck and larger body of Canada Geese.

Calls: The calls of Cackling Geese are higher in pitch than those of Canada Geese.

Overall Impression: Cackling Geese appear more delicate and have a steeper forehead compared to the more robust Canada Geese.

The cackling goose was originally considered the same species or a subspecies of the Canada goose, but in July 2004 the American Ornithologists' Union's (AOU) Committee on Classification and Nomenclature split the two into two species, making cackling goose into a full species with the scientific name Branta hutchinsii. The British Ornithologists' Union (BOU) followed suit in June 2005.
