This past Tuesday, I spent the day as a passenger in Paul Butcher's Caterham Seven.
Along for the day were Lizzy, Henry, and Ben from the kgb_ team.
Henry's shirt with the slogan, "I'm serious About Rails performance", was a gift from NewRelic at RailsConf Vegas this year.
NewRelic was invaluable to our tight US product launch this past January. It was my job to make sure that the small-volume service run by Texperts in the UK would scale properly on our EngineYard cluster once we opened the gates. We knew volume spikes would be high, since kgb_ runs television ads.
Having spent months building a distributed performance test system (our apps are very event-driven and collaborative), I was delighted when EngineYard directed us to NewRelic. It shows nearly-realtime stats of how the rails apps are performing, providing the perfect complement to my existing tests. When my tests triggered inefficiencies, NewRelic made identifying performance problems quick and straightforward for the other techs (and our friends at Percona).
We still use NewRelic to monitor our systems.
I need to get around to writing a talk or essay about how I did the performance tests. It was pretty cool - using Rails logs to auto-generate collaborative actions to be taken by a bunch of processes on Amazon EC2 to simulate very very large numbers of web app users.
I suppose it should be talk- then I too can go to RailsConf and like Henry obtain schwag from cool companies.
