PHYSICIANS THOMAS BUDINGER (LEFT) AND PETER VALK COMPARE THE HIGH-RESOLUTION BRAIN IMAGES PRODUCED AT THE DONNER 600-CRYSTAL POSITRON EMISSION TOMOGRAPH.

IN PET IMAGING, A POSITRON-EMITTING RADIOACTIVE TRACER IS INJECTED, INHALED OR INGESTED BY A PATIENT OR SUBJECT, ALLOWED TO CONCENTRATE IN A PARTICULAR ORGAN OR TYPE OF TISSUE, AND THEN IS DETECTED BY MEANS OF A RING OF CRYSTALS PLACED AROUND THE SUBJECT. THE CRYSTALS DETECT PHOTONS CREATED WHEN POSITRONS FROM THE TRACER ENCOUNTER ELECTRONS AND ANNIHILATE. PHOTO CREDIT: LAWRENCE BERKELEY LABORATORY.

On Tuesday, June 16th, guests gathered for “The Developing Mind: Understanding Our Children at Risk." This Ambassadors Speakers Series took place at Annandale Golf Club and was hosted by Marikay and David Cuthill. Bradley Peterson, MD, Director of the Institute for the Developing Mind (IDM), led an intriguing presentation on Neurodevelopmental and neurological disorders . He shared how the use of new approaches, such as brain imaging studies, can improve diagnosis and treatment plans. He also illustrated the vision for IDM, which is to foster the collaboration of scientists, clinical researchers, and clinicians to speed scientific discovery. Yoga, Meditation, and the Brain

Cullen College of Engineering Professor Jose Contreras-Vidal presents a NeuroHumanities workshop on the power of yoga and meditation to change the brain. In collaboration with Yoga Better instructors Andrew Royal Dugas, Andria Dugas and Lizzy Bosell, University of Houston participants wore mobile brain imaging headsets to monitor brain activity while practicing yoga during four sessions hosted at The Water Works at Sabine Street in Houston, Texas.

"Mapping memory: the brains behind remembering" is the title of the Rosalind Franklin Prize Lecture by Professor Eleanor A. Maguire, Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging, University College London.

She talks about recent advances in brain imaging technology that now offer the prospect of decoding memories from neural activity in the hippocampus of humans in vivo. Furthermore, in the last number of years it has become apparent that the hippocampus does not act alone in supporting memory. Using brain imaging it has been possible to delineate a distributed network of brain regions involved in supporting memories of our personal experiences.

Went to London for work. During the weekend met with two friends: Bob Crabtree from the notorius (computer) video editing magazine and Kris, a college friend Kris, who's now doing research on brain imaging for criminals.Uhuh. Had a great time :-)

all day today i was watching films about ghosts at different theaters around the city. the city is like any other city, and might even BE any other city as far as i'm concerned. in the startling daylight between theaters i kept seeing her. i kept looking up in surprise. it was never actually her. i'm not sure i knew that. from flood of sunlight back to another dungeon for another film. they made me drunk. and afterwards i saw her four times before i arrived at the next venue. today i am so wakeful it's hurting me.

Another light painting, but this one textured. I photographed these semi-square shapes from the back of a tinted vase that was reflecting Christmas tree lights. For an explanation on that, please see Wind Swept.

For the texture piece I bungeed a white coffee filter over my camera lense. Thank goodness I have a daughter and wife with long hair. Their soft fluffy hair bungees worked very well in "attaching" the coffee filter. I then shot at the Christmas lights using the natural perforations in the filter to capture a couple of light bursts through the filter.

I used 5 layers to complete this abstract. With the photo of the lights I used 3 copies. One converted to a painting using the "Spounge" painting effect tool (texture applied first; see below). The second was also converted using the "Smudge Stick" painting tool. The third I ultra saturated and ultra sharpened.

The other 2 layers were of the coffee filter photograph. One was used by itself unaltered on the initial light photo prior to using the Sponge paint tool. The second I used the Smudge tool at 906 px, normal, at 50% strength to smear directionality (right to left) around the light burst shot through the coffee filter. These were just off center. You can see one very clearly. It is yellow and roundish.

The smudged coffee filter image was applied in layering last. I applied "Linear Light" to it. The result was what looks like an explosion near the center of the image.

I called this piece Into Battle, because for all the world it looks like the semi-square shapes are heading into a battle's fray. I hope you enjoy this latest in my series of crazy brained images. I think I have let my imagination run a little wild lately... But that's OK. I like what the crazy side of me is producing. LOL!

A new tutorial is coming to my webpage PhotoCapM on how I produced this image with some graphic illustrations. Look for that in the coming week.

I got an MRI, and they gave me a CD with all of the images on it, so I can go through the various slices of head from various axes - it's kind of cool and creepy at the same time, especially when my eyeballs show up. I thought this was cool-looking - it seems like there's a little creature in the middle of this image.

This leads to the "Brain Imaging Unit" - fifty years ago it led to the Needlework Room :)
