"...The monument [Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II | National Monument of Victor Emmanuel II, 1885-1911] to Victor Emmanuel II ranked as the most prestigious new structure in the Roma Capitale. Its program was nothing less than to represent the unity of Italy (...). The design of the monument was derived from three competitions; the building of it took nearly thirty years [1885-1911]. Surely it is ignorable for architectural historians to be satisfied still with famous nicknames like the White Elephant, the Giant Typewriter, or the Wedding cake."

ROME - At the conclusion of the archaeological investigations into the building complex on the North-East slopes of the Palatine Hill, known in the archaeological literature as “Baths of Elagabalus”, this study clarifies the main building phases of the area, from the Julio-Claudian period to the Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. In particular, three building blocks have been examined dating back to the Julio-Claudian age, destroyed by the fire under the empire of Nero in 64 AD, which apparently were not followed by a new building phase. The construction activities started again under Hadrian, when the area was occupied by a new building, probably for commercial activities, with spaces overlooking the street towards the Forum, included in a much larger urban project, which extended between the Temple of Venus and Rome and the monumental substructures of the Palatine. The Hadrianic building had a short life: already in the Severan period it was demolished to be replaced by a new building of still uncertain use , with a large courtyard and many rooms around, and others opened towards the street. In the first half of the fourth century AD, on the ruins of the Severan building, a new edifice was founded characterized by a large peristyle, with pools and fountains inside the columnades, and by a cruciform hall with a masonry stibadium. A well was accessible through a large staircase, and on its bottom a dolium was placed, whose function is still uncertain. In a period that could be probably placed around the Seventh century, the area – then abandoned – was occupied by a small church with a single nave, whose walls reused in the foundations a large amount of marble sculptures, probably decorating the Severan building.

The empire and the dynasty from Africa is the catalog of the homonymous exhibition that is divided between Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Roman Forum (from November 15, 2018), but it is also a volume of studies that retrace the history of the Severi dynasty ( 193 to 235 AD) without neglecting any aspect: from the analysis of the reforms and their impact on society, to the novelties in the arts and in architecture Rome and the Empire. The texts provide the complete picture of the character of an era marked by the last great imperial family.
The exhibition, told and retraced in the catalog, documents "the last period of the empire in which Rome was great, governed by emperors who left a strong and lasting legacy in many fields, despite the advance of decline", explains Alfonsina Russo, Director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park. At the second order of the Colosseum, about one hundred archaeological finds are exhibited and works illustrating historical-political developments and artistic and architectural evolution in Rome and in the regions of the empire. The Palatine can be visited for the first time the vestiges of the so-called Emperor Elagabalus Spa, while a statuary cycle discovered on this site, made up of portraits and marble busts of fine quality, is gathered in the Temple of Romulus. The tour of the Palatine continues through the places of the Severi. In the Roman Forum, for the first time, a section of the vicus in Carinas was opened to the public, leading to the populous "delle Carine" neighborhood on the Esquiline hill. Today, through this access, we overlook the Templum Pacis, of which, after a long restoration, the magnificent opus sectile pavimentale is visible.

The empire and the dynasty from Africa is the catalog of the homonymous exhibition that is divided between Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Roman Forum (from November 15, 2018), but it is also a volume of studies that retrace the history of the Severi dynasty ( 193 to 235 AD) without neglecting any aspect: from the analysis of the reforms and their impact on society, to the novelties in the arts and in architecture Rome and the Empire. The texts provide the complete picture of the character of an era marked by the last great imperial family.
The exhibition, told and retraced in the catalog, documents "the last period of the empire in which Rome was great, governed by emperors who left a strong and lasting legacy in many fields, despite the advance of decline", explains Alfonsina Russo, Director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park. At the second order of the Colosseum, about one hundred archaeological finds are exhibited and works illustrating historical-political developments and artistic and architectural evolution in Rome and in the regions of the empire. The Palatine can be visited for the first time the vestiges of the so-called Emperor Elagabalus Spa, while a statuary cycle discovered on this site, made up of portraits and marble busts of fine quality, is gathered in the Temple of Romulus. The tour of the Palatine continues through the places of the Severi. In the Roman Forum, for the first time, a section of the vicus in Carinas was opened to the public, leading to the populous "delle Carine" neighborhood on the Esquiline hill. Today, through this access, we overlook the Templum Pacis, of which, after a long restoration, the magnificent opus sectile pavimentale is visible.

1). ROME - At the conclusion of the archaeological investigations into the building complex on the North-East slopes of the Palatine Hill, known in the archaeological literature as “Baths of Elagabalus”, this study clarifies the main building phases of the area, from the Julio-Claudian period to the Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. In particular, three building blocks have been examined dating back to the Julio-Claudian age, destroyed by the fire under the empire of Nero in 64 AD, which apparently were not followed by a new building phase. The construction activities started again under Hadrian, when the area was occupied by a new building, probably for commercial activities, with spaces overlooking the street towards the Forum, included in a much larger urban project, which extended between the Temple of Venus and Rome and the monumental substructures of the Palatine. The Hadrianic building had a short life: already in the Severan period it was demolished to be replaced by a new building of still uncertain use , with a large courtyard and many rooms around, and others opened towards the street. In the first half of the fourth century AD, on the ruins of the Severan building, a new edifice was founded characterized by a large peristyle, with pools and fountains inside the columnades, and by a cruciform hall with a masonry stibadium. A well was accessible through a large staircase, and on its bottom a dolium was placed, whose function is still uncertain. In a period that could be probably placed around the Seventh century, the area – then abandoned – was occupied by a small church with a single nave, whose walls reused in the foundations a large amount of marble sculptures, probably decorating the Severan building.
