Here we have discovered a large colony--several thousand individuals-- of the shrub known as "sand myrtle, or Leiophyllum buxifolium which is a member of the curious "crowberry" family (Empetraceae). Some of the plants today exhibited a few open flowers...but the real display starts at the beginning of April, when they all bloom, and it looks like a blanket of snow.
